Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the Mekong region as an aggregation of various commons, the contributors to this volume investigate the various commons across the boundaries of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The book incorporates the specialized fields of political science, area studies, public policy, international relations, international development, geography, economics, business administration, public health, engineering, agricultural economics, tropical agriculture, and biotechnology. The contributions to the book cover various issues including innovation and technology, transport and logistics, public health and literacy, traditional medicine, infectious diseases, advanced agricultural technologies, irrigation, water resources, labor migration, human trafficking, and counterfeiting. They examine various commons and goods related to these issues, and discuss practices, policies, decision-making processes and governance strategies for imagining a future Mekong Community that will avoid the tragedy, and explore the comedy of the commons/anti-commons. A valuable resource for scholars of the Mekong region, and more broadly for academics working on the interdisciplinary study of transboundary governance issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how governments can help firms in developing countries better seize the opportunities created by globalization and contribute to improving employment opportunities and poverty reduction. More specifically, it analyzes how local firms can get involved in global value chains, access distant and more profitable markets and upgrade their capabilities. Based on case studies, the book focuses on selected industries and reviews experiences of governments and enterprises in the Mekong sub-region (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam). It seeks to draw bottom up policy conclusions from firm- and industry-level analyses in specific country settings about how best to support private sector development in developing countries.--Publisher's description.
Download or read book Business for Development written by and published by OECD. This book was released on 2007 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the activities of the private sector in developing and emerging economies. It demonstrates how these activities are inter-related with government policies. Understanding these activities and publicprivate interactions is indispensable for allowing the private sector to play its fullest role in a nation's development process. To this end, several case studies are presented to provide concrete examples from Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Their analysis includes: the opportunities for expanding markets and upgrading skills in global value chains, the regulatory conditions that could best promote private sector development and the respective roles that government, business and donors can play in that process.

This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East–West Economic Corridor (EWEC) was launched in 1998 as a flagship initiative of the Greater Mekong Subregion. EWEC has since achieved many of its infrastructure targets and must now be transformed from a transport corridor into an economic corridor. This report reviews and updates the Pre-Investment Study for EWEC conducted in 2001. It consolidates the interests and concerns of stakeholders into a revised and updated strategy and action plan to provide a vision and framework, improve coordination, and assist in mobilizing resources for EWEC development. Preparation of this revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC involved a series of consultations with government officials of EWEC countries and representatives of the private sector, nongovernment organizations, and development partners. These consultations culminated in a regional workshop held on 24 April 2009 in Khon Kaen, Thailand. The revised and updated strategy and action plan for EWEC was endorsed at the 15th GMS Ministerial Conference held in Cha-am, Petchburi Province, Thailand on 17–19 June 2009.

This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North-South Economic Corridor (NSEC), one of the priority economic corridors under the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program, was designated as a GMS flagship initiative in 2002. Efforts have been taken since then to develop NSEC but these were pursued mainly on a project-by-project basis. Consultations in NSEC countries were started in the last quarter of 2007 to initiate a holistic approach to the development of NSEC. The strategy and action plan for NSEC is the product of these and subsequent consultations with government officials, representatives of the private sector, and other stakeholders in these countries. Besides providing a vision and framework for developing NSEC, this strategy and action plan is aimed at improving coordination, ensuring effective implementation, and helping the mobilization of resources and the broadening of support for NSEC development. The strategy and action plan for NSEC was endorsed at the 15th GMS Ministerial Conference held in Cha-am, Petchburi Province, Thailand on 17-19 June 2009.
