Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper seeks to analyse the transformation and diversification of the rural economy in Asia, focusing on the implications for income and employment opportunities for rural communities. Rural non-farm employment is a sizeable component of rural employment, tends to concentrate in services, and over time has grown more quickly than agricultural demployment. Non-farm income accounts for a significant share of rural household incomes. This paper suggests a role for a cluster-based industrial policy to further support the rapid expansion of rural non-farm employment. In some areas, this will be composed of rural industries; services will nonetheless continue to comprise the bulk of the rural non-farm economy, drawing its impetus primarily from interaction with existing or emerging urban centres."--Page 4.

Book excerpt: As a result of the declining contribution of rice based farming in East Asia, investment in agriculture must diversify to maintain rural incomes. In the short term, countries should : 1) diversify toward crops for which there is a promising market ( fruits, vegetables, livestock products ) rather than sugar, rubber, coconuts and palm oil; and 2) expand small scale industry, marketing, and construction in rural areas. Long term needs include : a) higher yielding secondary food crops; b) better integration of livestock and crop production; c) more flexible irrigation and drainage systems; and d) improved technology to lower the cost of production. The paper concludes that the challenge to agriculture in East Asia is to sustain rice farming whicle expanding into a more flexible, diverse agriculture. The task for aid agencies will be to come up with suitable analytical skills and technical knowledge for the switch from commodity based project lending to broader sectoral support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at agricultural systems and rural economies in Asia through the prism of alternative innovation systems, alternative public policy and institutional changes. The massive shifts within the agricultural economy in Asia, geared towards increasing production, has had a direct effect on the livelihood of a large mass of people in rural societies, causing financial and social distress. This book explores a wide range of solutions, such as the role of education, improving technical skills and human capital, along with interactive learning in R&D, harnessing ICTs and institutional innovations, to see how these problems can be alleviated. The volume looks at how these methods can help formulate alternative ways to build sustainable and inclusive agricultural societies, ensure food security, sustainable growth and agricultural productivity. This book, rich in theoretical and empirical matter, will be useful for academics and researchers interested in agricultural innovation, development studies and agricultural economics. It will also be of interest to policymakers and thinktanks working towards inclusive social development and sustainability in Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
Book Synopsis More Than the Soil by : Jonathan Rigg
Download or read book More Than the Soil written by Jonathan Rigg and published by Pearson Education. This book was released on 2001 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than the Soil focuses on the social, cultural, economic and technological processes that have transformed rural areas of Southeast Asia. The underlying premise is that rural lives and livelihoods in this region have undergone fundamental change. No longer can we assume that rural livelihoods are founded on agriculture; nor can we assume that people envisage their futures in terms of farming. The inter-penetration of the rural and urban, and the degree to which rural people migrate between rural and urban areas, and shift from agriculture to non-agriculture, raises fundamental questions about how we conceptualise the rural Southeast Asia and the households to be found there. The book makes extensive use of case study material to illustrate and support the arguments presented. There is also a conscious attempt to bridge the apllied-conceptual divide and to embed the Southeast Asian experience within the wider context of the rural South. Jonathan Rigg is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography, University of Durham. He has had a long-standing interest in rural development in Southeast Asia and has published widely on the subject with reference to the region.

Book Synopsis Transforming Agriculture in South Asia by : Ashok K. Mishra
Download or read book Transforming Agriculture in South Asia written by Ashok K. Mishra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about public expenditure in the agricultural sector have reopened in many developing and emerging economies because of high budget deficits and changes in public opinion. As a result, agricultural policy in many of these countries is beginning to take a more market-oriented approach to agrarian problems, most notably through the introduction of contract farming. This book explores the policy issues around contract farming and its transformative potential and addresses the lack of empirical research on this topic by focusing on South Asia: principally India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The book first addresses the effects of contract farming (vertical coordination) on productivity, food security indicators (yield, consumption expenditures, prices), employment and input usage. Then it draws lessons from the South Asian case studies on the impact of institutional changes, like contract farming, on income and food security of smallholder households. The core of the book includes case study chapters on several commodities that are produced under contract farming, including vegetables and fisheries in Bangladesh, low-value crops in Nepal and coffee in India. Other chapters also explore contracts, storage, input usage and technical efficiency in these cases. This book serves as an essential guide to academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons and think tank groups interested in agrarian issues, agricultural economics and agricultural policy in emerging economies and particularly in South Asia.
