Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF OPTICAL DATING USING QUARTZ AND POTASSIUM-FELDSPAR FROM QUATERNARY SEDIMENTS Submitted by Bo Li for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in November 2007 New methods were presented for the dating of Quaternary sediments using luminescence signals from quartz and potassium-feldspar (K-feldspar) grains. These are based on fundamental studies carried out on separated quartz and feldspar grains. Estimation of the equivalent dose using the fast component and the medium component of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) from quartz grains was investigated using both linear-modulated OSL (LM-OSL) and continuous-wave OSL (CW-OSL) techniques. By mathematical fitting of the LM-OSL curves, the fast component of the quartz OSL signal can be separated from the signals observed for mixed mineral grains in order to determine the equivalent dose (D ). The medium component underestimates the D for old samples, and this is attributed to its thermal e instability. A method was proposed to evaluate the D values for the fast component and medium component by analyzing the D as a function of stimulation time. Three kinds of source traps (i.e. shallow, medium and deep sources) for thermal transfer in quartz were identified. The shallow source is thermally unstable below 260C and is mainly related to the main OSL trap. The medium source is the primary charge source (peak 300C). The deep source is dominant at higher temperatures. Two kinds of OSL traps were identified as accepting the charges from the medium and deep sources. These OSL traps have different thermal stabilities and associated sensitization processes from those of the main OSL traps. A method was proposed to correct for thermal transfer effects for young samples based on the linear relationship between the initial and final parts of the thermally transferred OSL signals in repeated heat/OSL measurement cycles. A new isochron method involving measurement of the IRSL signals from K-feldspar grains of different size was proposed. It is based on the observation that the IRSL signal due to the internal dose does not appear to fade. The consistency between the isochron ages and quartz ages for 12 sediment samples from different geological settings suggests that the isochron method can be used to overcome anomalous fading. It can also be used to avoid problematic effects from changes in environmental dose rate. It was successfully applied to a lacustrine section showing significant changes in environmental dose rate due to a recent uptake of radioisotopes. The validity of the method was also tested using single grain IRSL measurements on K-feldspar grains. Optical dating using quartz was applied to the Holocene lacustrine and fluvial sediments at the Dagouwan section in the Sala Us River bank, Mu Us Desert. The results indicate that the Holocene Optimum occurred between 8.3 and 5.0 ka ago. After 5.0 ka ago, the Holocene Optimum terminated and the climate became dry again. The Sala Us River began to cut through the underlying Quaternary sediments after 2 ka ago with a down-cutting rate of 3-4 cm/year. The drainage of the Sala Us River accelerated the disappearance of the lake water and the deterioration of the local environment. However, impacts from human activities a

As such increasing numbers of Quaternary geologists, physical geographers, archaeologists, and anthropologists are now relying on the results produced. Written by one of the foremost experts on optical dating, this book aims to bring together in a coherent whole the various strands of research that are ongoing in the area. It gives beginners an introduction to the technique as well as acting as a valuable source of up to date references. The text is divided into three parts; main text, technical notes and appendices. In this way the main text is accessible by those researchers with a limited knowledge of physics, with the technical notes providing depth of understanding for those who require it. The first part of the book is concerned with basic notions and an introduction to the standard techniques, as well as several illustrative case histories. It goes on to then discuss the limitations of the technique and factors affecting reliability.

It has been reactivated as a result of the Cenozoic India-Eurasia collision. Dating of the late Cenozoic tectonic deformation of Tian Shan and its piedmonts is important for understanding the mountain building as well as evaluating seismic hazards in the region. This study is focused on the applications of optical dating to the late Quaternary uplift and thrust activity along Manas River, in the northern piedmont of the Tian Shan, China. The sediments on river terraces were dated with optical dating. The elevations were measured with the kinematic global position system (GPS). The results suggest that two phases can be identified according to the significantly different river incision rates. One phase was from 20 ka to 4.8 ka, with a much slower incision rate of 2.2 0.6 mm/yr. The other phase was from 4.8 ka to present, with a faster incision rate of 13.5 0.6 mm/yr. The accelerated incision rate of Manas River was mainly attributed to the tectonic forces, suggesting that the tectonic uplift was significantly intensified since 4.8 ka in the northern piedmont of Tian Shan. The study region has suffered from multiple thrust activities during the late Quaternary, which led to the intensive deformations of the river terraces. By studying the deformed terraces, I evaluated the timing of the past thrust activities as well as the vertical slip rate of the thrust faults. The results demonstrated that the thrust activity intensified during the late Holocene, as manifested by the more frequent thrust activities and higher vertical slip rates. Both quartz and potassium feldspar can be as dosimeters for optical dating of sediments. However, quartz OSL is sometimes seriously impeded with problems such as very dim signals and insufficient bleaching problems. K-feldspar has attractive advantages over quartz, despite of problem of anomalous fading. K-feldspar was explored in this study, by investigating the relationship between the infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) and blue light stimulated luminescence (BLSL) signals. For IRSL and BLSL at 60 C, it was suggested that most of the IRSL could be bleached by blue light (BL), while the BLSL could only be partially bleached by infrared (IR) stimulation. Besides, the fast and medium components of BLSL were mainly associated with the IRSL. If IR stimulation temperature was raised from 60 to 200 C, at least two portions of the IRSL signals at 200 C were observed. One portion could be bleached by BL at 60 C and the other portion was hardly bleached by BL at 60 C. Dating of K-feldspar from the various signals provided cross-checking for the reliability of quartz OSL for dating sedimentary samples. Book excerpt: Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating is a tool used in Quaternary Geology for assessing ages of depositional mineral grains such as quartz, feldspars and zircons. In particular, OSL showed to be exceptionally robust and reliable for dating quartz samples. OSL dating relies on the assumption that the luminescence signal of grains is fully reset to zero by sunlight exposure before deposition. If this requirement is not fulfilled (i.e. grains were 'poorly-bleached'), ages may be grossly overestimated. In particular, poor-bleaching can significantly affect age estimations of young sediments. Standard procedures for estimating the burial dose of a sediment make use of a large number of grains (aliquot) that is measured simultaneously. This approach has been shown to work well, but only on homogeneously bleached sediments. An alternative way to investigate poor-bleaching within a sample is to measure the OSL signal from individual grains rather than from aliquots made up of several thousands of grains. The advantage is that individual grains with large doses (possibly due to poor-bleaching) can be identified and dealt with. detectable signals and luminescence responses are weak. The aim of this publication is to determine the feasibility of applying dating techniques to individual grains of quartz from deposits formed within the last 300 years.

The two principle methods are luminescence dating and electron spin resonance. Both are based on stored energy produced by the absorption of natural radioactivity in common minerals such as quartz and feldspars, and in some biological materials such as tooth enamel. Methodological developments in the last 20 years have substantially increased the accuracy and precision of these methods. This compilation offers a taste of the recent research into both method and applications.

Abstract: This study focused on developing luminescence dating procedures for feldspar, and the application of the luminescence dating technique to fluvial terraces of Anjihai River in the northern piedmont of Tian Shan range, China, to evaluate the deformation rate of the Anjihai anticline in the late Quaternary. To develop luminescence dating methods, a low temperature multi-elevated-temperature post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence (MET-pIRIR) protocol has been proposed for measuring the Holocene samples using K-feldspar. Progressively increasing IR stimulation temperatures from 50 to 170 C in step of 30C were used in the protocol. The residual doses for the MET-pIRIR signals were generally less than 1 Gy. This protocol was further simplified to a three-step pIRIR method, with three stimulation temperatures of 110, 140 and 170C. It has been shown that these new pIRIR methods can be applied successfully to aeolian samples within the Holocene. A high temperature MET-pIRIR dating protocol was initially applied to polymineral fine grains (4-11 μm), recovered from Chinese loess samples collected at Luochuan that accumulated within the last glacial-interglacial period. The MET-pIRIR ages for fine grains were compared with the coarse grain (63-90 μm) K-feldspar MET-pIRIR ages and the coarse grain quartz OSL ages, and the stratigraphic age controls. The results show that the MET-pIRIR protocol can be applied to fine grains from these loess samples without fading correction. A plateau test, termed the De (T, t) plot, was proposed as a self-diagnosing tool for the pIRIR dating protocols. The pattern of the De (T, t) plot was shown to be affected by non-bleachable signal, partial bleaching and anomalous fading effects. The achievement of a plateau in the De (T, t) plot indicates that the non-fading signal has been achieved, and the effects of non-bleachable dose and partial bleaching are negligible. The De (T, t) test was successfully applied to different pIRIR protocols. A series of loess and fluvial sand samples were collected from the north piedmont of Tian Shan range to determine appropriate dating procedures for samples in this area. Luminescence properties of quartz and K-feldspar grains extracted from these samples were investigated. The extent of bleaching for the samples and the reliability of the measured ages were assessed based on equivalent dose distribution and age comparison between chronometers. Optimized dating procedures for samples in north Tian Shan have been proposed. K-feldspar MET-pIRIR dating is recommended for the loess samples, while single aliquot quartz OSL dating is suggested for the fluvial sand samples, after consideration of signal brightness and the extent of signal resetting. The dating procedures proposed above were applied to the deformed fluvial terraces of Anjihai River in the north flank of Tian Shan. Combined with topographic measurements, the deformation rate of the Anjihai anticline was calculated. The average shortening rates of the Anjihai anticline since 3.6 0.1, 9.0 0.6 and 53.3 2.2 ka were calculated to be 1.4 0.3, 1.2 0.3 and 0.5 0.1 mm/a, respectively. It suggests that the northern Tian Shan region was tectonically active during the late Quaternary, especially in the Holocene. Book excerpt: Geoarchaeology is the archaeological subfield that focuses on archaeological information retrieval and problem solving utilizing the methods of geological investigation. Archaeological recovery and analysis are already geoarchaeological in the most fundamental sense because buried remains are contained within and removed from an essentially geological context. Yet geoarchaeological research goes beyond this simple relationship and attempts to build collaborative links between specialists in archaeology and the earth sciences to produce new knowledge about past human behavior using the technical information and methods of the geosciences. The principal goals of geoarchaeology lie in understanding the relationships between humans and their environment. These goals include (1) how cultures adjust to their ecosystem through time, (2) what earth science factors were related to the evolutionary emergence of humankind, and (3) which methodological tools involving analysis of sediments and landforms, documentation and explanation of change in buried materials, and measurement of time will allow access to new aspects of the past. This encyclopedia defines terms, introduces problems, describes techniques, and discusses theory and strategy, all in a format designed to make specialized details accessible to the public as well as practitioners. It covers subjects in environmental archaeology, dating, materials analysis, and paleoecology, all of which represent different sources of specialist knowledge that must be shared in order to reconstruct, analyze, and explain the record of the human past. It will not specifically cover sites, civilizations, and ancient cultures, etc., that are better described in other encyclopedias of world archaeology. The Editor Allan S. Gilbert is Professor of Anthropology at Fordham University in the Bronx, New York. He holds a B.A. from Rutgers University, and his M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. were earned at Columbia University. His areas of research interest include the Near East (late prehistory and early historic periods) as well as the Middle Atlantic region of the U.S. (historical archaeology). His specializations are in archaeozoology of the Near East and geoarchaeology, especially mineralogy and compositional analysis of pottery and building materials. Publications have covered a range of subjects, including ancient pastoralism, faunal quantification, skeletal microanatomy, brick geochemistry, and two co-edited volumes on the marine geology and geoarchaeology of the Black Sea basin.

Book excerpt: In recent years single-grain dating of quartz has been used to provide luminescence ages of proglacial sediments but the poor sensitivity of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal of quartz can make dating in some geographical regions challenging. The main aim of this study is to improve luminescence dating in glacial environments by developing and testing methods of single-grain dating of K-feldspars from proglacial sediments using the post-IR infra-red stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) signal. The Lago Buenos Aires valley in Patagonia was chosen as the study site because the existing chronology in the valley that constrains the ages of moraine deposition provides a rare opportunity to compare luminescence dating of proglacial sediments with ages determinedusing independent dating techniques.A number of challenges associated with single-grain luminescence dating of Kfeldspar are addressed in this study in order to provide accurate ages using the technique. This includes developing a procedure using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to directly measure the internal K-content of individual grains of K-feldspar, and provide an average internal K-content appropriate for single-grain dating where geochemical measurements of individual grains are not available. Experiments are also performed in this study to demonstrate that the reproducibility of single-grain pIRIR luminescence measurements can be optimised by reducing the disc location temperature from an elevated temperature to room temperature and using the IR LEDs to bleach the grains during the SAR cycle. Laboratory bleaching experiments also demonstrate that the bleaching potential of the pIRIR signal is not expected to be a barrier for single-grain dating of samples in this study. Finally, IRSL ages are provided for single grains of K-feldspar from two aeoliandune sand samples that were taken from above and below the Kawakawa tephra from North Island, New Zealand, and for a suite of ten proglacial samples from the Lago Buenos Aires valley that are associated with the deposition of moraine ridges dated using cosmogenic isotope dating and 40Ar/39Ar dating. The ages ranging from 15 - 111 ka presented in this study agree with the independent numerical age control within dating uncertainties. Therefore, this study suggests that the technique can be used to provide accurate ages for aeolian and proglacial sediments.

Book excerpt: Dating the Quaternary, which covers approximately the last 2 million years, has experienced considerable progress over the past few decades. On the one hand, this resulted from the necessity to obtain a valid age concept for this period which had seen tremendous environmental changes and the advent of the genus Homo. On the other hand, instrumental improvements, such as the introduction of highly sensitive analytical techniques, gave rise to physical and chemical innovations in the field of dating. This rapid methodological development is still in full progress. The broad spectrum of chronometric methods applicable to young rocks and artifacts also becomes increasingly intricate to the specialist. Hence, it is my goal to present a comprehensive, state-of-the-art sum mary of these methods. This book is essentially designed as an aid for scientists who feel a demand for dating tasks falling into this period, i. e., Quaternary geologists and archaeologists in the broadest sense. Since it has been developed from a course of lectures for students of geological and archaeological sciences, held at the University of Heidelberg, it certainly shall serve as an introduction for students of these disciplines.

Book excerpt: Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating has proven to be extremely useful for establishing the Late Quaternary chronological framework in many areas of the Brazilian territory. In this region dominated by tropical climate, OSL dating can be more extensively applied than radiocarbon dating due to the generally low potential for the preservation of organic matter in sedimentary samples. This problem is especially critical in areas of the Amazonian lowlands, because of the hot climate and high precipitation rates. The abundance of quartz grains deposited in fluvial and aeolian environments over this region favours OSL dating. More than 20 years of continuous and collaborative work has resulted in the creation of an extensive OSL age database for Late Quaternary sedimentary deposits in the Amazonian lowlands. This effort has contributed to improving the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions of this region within this period. This book discusses the state of art of OSL dating of Late Quaternary deposits in the Amazonian lowlands, focusing on providing an introduction to dating principles using OSL, and defining the application of OSL techniques as a dating method. It also offers a statistical study and calculation of equivalent dose and annual dose rates, details the sampling and experimental apparatus, and considers the difficulties and adaptation techniques in dating Late Quaternary strata in the Amazonian lowlands.
