Book Synopsis A Social History of Disability in the Middle Ages by : Irina Metzler
Download or read book A Social History of Disability in the Middle Ages written by Irina Metzler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was it like to be disabled in the Middle Ages? How did people become disabled? Did welfare support exist? This book discusses social and cultural factors affecting the lives of medieval crippled, deaf, mute and blind people, those nowadays collectively called "disabled." Although the word did not exist then, many of the experiences disabled people might have today can already be traced back to medieval social institutions and cultural attitudes. This volume informs our knowledge of the topic by investigating the impact medieval laws had on the social position of disabled people, and conversely, how people might become disabled through judicial actions; ideas of work and how work could both cause disability through industrial accidents but also provide continued ability to earn a living through occupational support networks; the disabling effects of old age and associated physical deteriorations; and the changing nature of attitudes towards welfare provision for the disabled and the ambivalent role of medieval institutions and charity in the support and care of disabled people.
Book Synopsis Revival: The Evolution of Modern Marriage (1930) by : Franz Carl Muller-Lyer
Download or read book Revival: The Evolution of Modern Marriage (1930) written by Franz Carl Muller-Lyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many books on marriage leave one with a feeling of chaos that it is important to examine any document underlying the discovery of order by searching for underlying tendencies. The author emphasizes the necessity of taking the evolutionary point of view, and sees in militant feminism, which teaches emulation of men, a phase which will pass as women come to make their own peculiar spiritual contribution to civilization as men have done. Perhaps this will come the sooner, he suggests, if women will regard themselves as the equivalents and not as the equals of men.

Book Synopsis The Hands of the Tongue by : Edwin D. Craun
Download or read book The Hands of the Tongue written by Edwin D. Craun and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What destructive powers did the tongue and its speech have for medievals? It could damn humans through blasphemy. It could occlude penitential knowledge of the self, especially of the misdirected will, by generating excuses for what the medieval clergy regarded as sin. It could disrupt monastic disciplines of meditation or distract parishioners during sermons. It could turn good repute to ill, destroying a woman's chances for marriage, a man's masculine self, a merchant's credit, or a defendant's status in a court of law. However, speech could maintain or restore credit, status, and masculinity, and it could also preserve honor in knights or women, in their particular roles as faithful feudal wives. Many of the essays in The Hands of the Tongue: Essays on Deviant Speech bridge disciplines, with social historians adducing evidence from lyrics, narrative poetry, and plays, or literary historians working from moral theology and biblical exegesis. Certainly the whole set of essays works to remind medievalists that any aspects of medieval culture worth studying must be explored collectively. Together the contributors present a clear picture of what we know about deviant speech in medieval culture, offering a critical perspective on the state of the scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various authors present case studies of microhistory, an evolving branch of historical research that seeks to focus on writing without anachronism about events and peoples. The microhistorian uses the methodology of strict positivist standards to reconstruct the meanings of artifacts in their original context. They seek to find historical causation on the level of small groups and open history to ideas tainted by the modernity of other methods.
