Download or read book The afronauts written by Kojo Ngué and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer Cristina De Middel (1975, Spain) chose as the starting point for her project The Afronauts a little-known episode from Zambia's history. This was a space programme started by an educator which suddenly entered Zambia in the space race with the United States and Russia. Its aim was to put the first African on the moon. Due to a lack of financial resources, however, the ambitious initiative was doomed to failure. Fifty years later, De Middel reconstructs this story, using her own imagination. In The Afronauts, De Middel combines set-up photography with copies of typed letters and reproductions of vintage photos. Although The Afronauts is in fact based on a failed undertaking, the project includes nothing that refers to the failure - to the contrary. The photos have an upbeat look thanks to De Middels's fanciful space suits, playful astronaut training sessions and a Zambian flag with a smiley face. Other characters also appear against the background of the rugged landscape of Alicante, including an elephant presented as a space creature and a cat dressed in a starred costume, which according to the story also was planned to be launched into space.

Download or read book Illuminance written by Rinko Kawauchi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, Rinko Kawauchi launched her career with the simultaneous publication of three astonishing photobooksUtatane, Hanabi, and Hanakofirmly establishing her as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but across the globe. In the years that followed, she published other notable monographs, including Aila (2004), The Eyes, the Ears (2005), and Semear (2007). And now, ten years after her precipitous entry onto the international stage, Aperture is delighted to publish Illuminance, the latest volume of Kawauchis work and the first to be published outside of Japan. Kawauchis work has frequently been lauded for its nuanced palette and offhand compositional mastery, as well as her ability to incite wonder via careful attention to tiny gestures and the incidental details of her everyday environment. In Illuminance, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns. This impressive compilation of previously unpublished images is proof of Kawauchis unparalleled, unique sensibility and her on-going appeal to the lovers of photography.

Download or read book Imperial Courts, 1993-2015 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1992, Dana Lixenberg travelled to South Central Los Angeles for a magazine story on the riots that erupted following the verdict in the Rodney King trial. What she encountered inspired her to revisit the area, and led her to the community of the Imperial Courts housing project in Watts. Returning countless times over the following twenty-two years, Lixenberg gradually created a collaborative portrait of the changing face of this community. Over the years, some in the community were killed, while others disappeared or went to jail, and others, once children in early photographs, grew up and had children of their own. In this way, Imperial Courts constitutes a complex and evocative record of the passage of time in an underserved community.
Download or read book Monsanto written by Jim Gerritsen and published by Kettler Verlag. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a manufacturer of food and animal feed, seeds and chemical products, Monsanto is relentlessly developing and marketing new technologies. The monopoly it has arguably secured by dubious means bears no relation to its negligence with regard to potential risks. Particularly in light of the devastating consequences that are still causing suffering to people and the environment in many places, the company's self-portrayal as a forward-looking, omnipotent force for good seems cynical. The photographer Mathieu Asselin, who lives in France and Venezuela, has tried his hand at the daunting task of exploring the issues surrounding Monsanto. His investigative photographic study manages to capture the complexity of this topic, creating links between past, present and future and illuminating many different aspects from a variety of perspectives.

Book Synopsis 1078 Blue Skies / 4432 Days by : Anton Kusters
Download or read book 1078 Blue Skies / 4432 Days written by Anton Kusters and published by Kehrer Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a six-year period, Anton Kusters researched and photographed a blue sky at the last known location of every former nazi Germany SS concentration camp and killing center across Europe. More than half of these 1078 sites have no visual remains today. Every photograph is manually blind-stamped with the number of victims beneath that sky, as well as its gps coordinates. The artist's upwards viewpoint reflects upon the difficulty of representing trauma and commemoration, and is a confrontation of how we see, and how we choose to remember.
Download or read book On Abortion written by Laia Abril and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'On Abortion' is the first part of Laia Abril's new long-term project, 'A History of Misogyny'. The work was first exhibited at Les Rencontres in Arles in 2016 and awarded the Prix de la Photo Madame Figaro and the Fotopress Grant. Abril documents and conceptualises the dangers and damage caused by women's lack of legal, safe and free access to abortion. She draws on the past to highlight the long, continuing erosion of women's reproductive rights through to the present-day, weaving together questions of ethics and morality, to reveal a staggering series of social triggers, stigmas, and taboos around abortion that have been largely invisible until now.

Download or read book Ametsuchi written by Rinko Kawauchi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punctuating the series are images of Buddhist rituals and other religious ceremonies-a suggestion of other means by which humankind has traditionally attempted to transcend time and memory. The book is designed by award-winning Dutch designer Hans Gremmen, who brings a sense of the monumental and the mysterious to the design, including a seductive origami binding. The series is Kawauchi's first to be fully realized with a medium-format, 4 x 5 camera, instead of the 2- -inch format for which she has become best known. And while her work has frequently touched on the ephemeral, often using tiny details as a point of access to the larger cycles of life, with this new body of work, she purposely concentrates on the elemental and universal."--Publisher's description.
