Book Synopsis The Grammar of the Old High German Modal Particles Thoh, Ia, and Thanne by : Mary Michele Wauchope
Download or read book The Grammar of the Old High German Modal Particles Thoh, Ia, and Thanne written by Mary Michele Wauchope and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive study of a set of Old High German particles, thoh, ia, and thanne, focuses on the pragmatic functions of those particles. After categorizing modal particles - particles which indicate implicitly a speaker's relationship to or attitude toward his or her own discourse - as a subset of metacommunicative particles, the author argues convincingly that thoh, ia, and thanne exhibit modal particle functions in four Old High German texts: they point to a speaker's presuppositions and expectations, determine interlocutionary force, and convey connotations ranging from surprise to accusation.

Download or read book Elemente Einer Kulturkontrastive Linguistik written by Hannes Kniffka and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1995 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume document about a decade of teaching experience in the fields of linguistics and foreign languages (German, English as a foreign language) in different cultures (Saudi Arabia, PR China, Morocco). There is no attempt to introduce yet another branch of modern linguistics. Rather, the old theme of the cultural embeddedness of verbal (and non-verbal) behavior is discussed from various perspectives. All papers are based on a large amount of authentic data of culture-specific and intercultural behavior, gathered by participant observation, interviews, tests etc. in the different settings over a long period of time. The main objective is to contribute to an extensional definition of «culture-contrastive linguistics» by a discussion of descriptive and didactic issues in an empirical fashion.

Book Synopsis The German Language in British Higher Education by : Sylvia Jaworska
Download or read book The German Language in British Higher Education written by Sylvia Jaworska and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of German Studies in English-speaking countries is in crisis and the situation in British Higher Education can be seen as a paradigmatic example. Symptoms of the crisis are a dramatic decrease in the number of students, financial difficulties and the resulting closures of German Departments. Furthermore, the language skills which finally emerge from universities are not always satisfactory. The present book sheds light on key aspects of the institutionalised teaching and learning of German language in the UK. The first part - the macro-context - surveys the socio-political developments that have recently affected the sector of modern languages and specifically the discipline of German Studies. The second part - the micro-context -, zooms in to the teaching and learning as experienced from both students' and teachers' perspective. Ultimately, by linking the macro-analysis with the micro findings, the present book proposes a number of strategies which could contribute to the optimisation and enhancement of teaching and learning German in British Higher Education.
Book Synopsis Prescription and Tradition in Language by : Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade
Download or read book Prescription and Tradition in Language written by Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contextualises case studies across a wide variety of languages and cultures, crystallising key interrelationships between linguistic standardisation and prescriptivism, and between ideas and practices. It focuses on different traditions of standardisation and prescription throughout the world and addresses questions such as how nationalistic idealisations of ‘traditional’ language persist (or shift) amid language change, linguistic variation and multilingualism. The volume explores issues of standardisation and the sociolinguistic phenomenon of prescription as a formative influence on the notional standard language as well as the interconnections between these in a wide range of geographical contexts. It balances the otherwise strong emphasis on English in English language publications on prescriptivism and breaks new ground with its multilingual approach across languages and nations. The book will appeal to scholars working within different linguistic traditions interested in questions relating to all aspects of standardisation and prescriptivism.

Book Synopsis Compliments and Compliment Responses by : Andrea Golato
Download or read book Compliments and Compliment Responses written by Andrea Golato and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes compliments and compliment responses in naturally occurring talk-in-interaction in German. Using Conversation Analytic methodology, it views complimenting and responding to compliments as social actions which are co-produced and negotiated among interactants. This study is the first to analyze the entire complimenting sequence within the larger interactional context, thereby demonstrating the interconnectedness of sequence organization, turn-design, and (varying) function(s) of a turn. In this regard, the present study makes a novel contribution to the study of talk-in-interaction beyond German. The book adds to existing work on interaction and grammar by closely analyzing the functions of linguistic resources used to design compliment turns and compliment responses. Here, the study extends previous Conversation Analytic work on person reference by including an analysis of inanimate object reference. Lastly, the book discusses the use and function of various particles and demonstrates how speaker alignments and misalignments are accomplished through various grammatical forms.
Book Synopsis Multilingualism and Education in Africa by : Ruth W. Ndung’u
Download or read book Multilingualism and Education in Africa written by Ruth W. Ndung’u and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a must-read for every language teaching professional and researcher working in a multilingual context. Multilingualism and Education in Africa: The State of the State of the Art is an up-to-date exploration and wide-ranging review of the symbiotic relationship between multilingualism and education in Africa. The African continent is rich in languages. Most of her inhabitants are multilingual and many of the nations have embraced multilingual education. This book examines multilingualism in education from three broad perspectives: multilingualism and language in education policy in Africa; multilingualism as an educational resource in Africa; and attitudes and challenges of multilingualism and education in Africa. The book’s nineteen chapters discuss these three perspectives from East, West, Central and South Africa. All the contributors are leading authorities in multilingualism and education. The chapters combine a wide range of viewpoints based on theoretical, empirical and personal experiences. The reader is left with a deeper understanding of the unique features of multilingualism and education in Africa that have seldom been addressed by those who experience them first-hand. The book demonstrates successful practices in multilingualism and education; showing how African nations have determined what works for them without ignoring challenges such as policies on paper, attitudes towards African languages and limited resources. The benefits of multilingual education override the challenges. The book’s extensive coverage makes it an important resource for scholars and policy makers in the field of multilingualism and education. Overall, this book represents an important contribution to an important subject in education globally. The editors have provided an introductory overview to the book and commentaries on the three sections.
Book Synopsis The Typology of Reflexives by : Emma Geniusiené
Download or read book The Typology of Reflexives written by Emma Geniusiené and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on language universals and research on linguistic typology are not antagonistic, but rather complementary approaches to the same fundamental problem: the relationship between the amazing diversity of languages and the profound unity of language. Only if the true extent of typological divergence is recognized can universal laws be formulated. In recent years it has become more and more evident that a broad range of languages of radically different types must be carefully analyzed before general theories are possible. Typological comparison of this kind is now at the centre of linguistic research. The series empirical approaches to language typology presents a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. The distinctive feature of the series is its markedly empirical orientation. All conclusions to be reached are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. General problems are focused on from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of phenomena from little known languages, which shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics. The series is open to contributions from different theoretical persuasions. It thus reflects the methodological pluralism that characterizes the present situation. Care is taken that all volumes be accessible to every linguist and, moreover, to every reader specializing in some domain related to human language. A deeper understanding of human language in general, based on a detailed analysis of typological diversity among individual languages, is fundamental for many sciences, not only for linguists. Therefore, this series has proven to be indispensable in every research library, be it public or private, which has a specialization in language and the language sciences.
