Book excerpt: The study identifies family related and other factors that are key to retention of successful US Army Officers. The study identifies twelve factors, some family-related, which influence successful commissioned officers to stay in the Army. To the extent that these factors have been identified, they could prove useful for inclusion within, or as reinforcement of, Army Retention and Family Programs. The study provides data gained by survey of commissioned officers who have reached an accepted level of 'success' in their Army careers, research of pertinent literature and sources, and conclusions and recommendations determined from analysis of the data. While the study is limited to consideration of issues involving commissioned officers, conclusions may be valuable in planning for retention of successful soldiers of all ranks, and for the consideration of Army families. The study represents a preliminary examination of a well defined officer population. The methodology is relevant to other military populations, at various points in their careers, who should be examined further.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report researches the effectiveness of the Army's Military Family Programs and attempt to measure their impact on unit readiness, family wellness, and soldier retention. Over 50 percent of the Army's Active duty force is married and this factor alone has significantly impacted on the Army's programs that support families. For years, the Army's attitude toward the military family was, 'We take care of our own'. While it was a noble thing to say, it was nothing more than empty rhetoric that caused many soldiers and families to suffer needlessly. In recent years, the Army has come to recognize the importance of the Army family and to acknowledge its obligation. Toward that end, programs such as Family Advocacy, Family Child Care, Sponsorship, Exceptional Family Member Program and the Army Community Service now receive the attention of the Army through Leadership and financial support. The basic question is whether or not the Army is getting its money's worth from these programs. Are the benefits worth the cost? To determine the effectiveness of Military Family Programs, data was gathered using a literature search, the development and employment of a questionnaire, and personal interviews with Army Officers at the United States Army War College. The research for this project unequivocably indicated that Military Family Programs are on the whole very positive and so serve to enhance family wellness, unit readiness, and soldier retention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection shows what happens when one university takes on the challenge of developing the scholarship of teaching and learning with a view to enhancing students' learning experiences. Authors from the sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences, and from the health sciences, demonstrate the research they have done to investigate their students' learning. The editors, Angela Brew and Judyth Sachs, have captured the intricacies of teaching and learning in different academic domains in this rich and varied collection. The book explores students' responses to contemporary art, to multicultural music and to architecture for the poor and dispossessed. It explores students' ability to transfer mathematical knowledge from one subject to another; how students learn to talk like a pharmacist, or understand basic concepts in physics; how students are prepared for university study in first year classes or in the operating theatre; how they learn to write like a scientist; how they learn in online discussions and how they understand group work and group assessment. Each chapter is grounded in rigorous research and scholarship and indicates actions that have been taken to improve teaching and students' learning. This book is a remarkable demonstration of scholarly teaching practice from a single institution. It should be read by all teachers and managers in higher and tertiary education institutions interested in developing teaching and learning.
