Book excerpt: This study examined the effectiveness of culturally specific eating disorder prevention program for African American college women. Twenty-eight African American college women students participated in either an eating disorder prevention intervention or a delayed treatment control group. This was the first empirical examination of a culturally relevant eating disorder program for African American women. This intervention was unique because it was theoretically grounded, used a prevention framework, and collected follow-up data. Results suggest the program was successful at decreasing body dissatisfaction with specific body areas immediately following the intervention, but this was not stable across a one-month period. Women who participated in the experimental group did not show significant decreases in body preoccupation or skin color satisfaction compared to the delayed treatment control group. Process data indicated that women found the discussion aspect of the workshop to be one of the most helpful aspects of the program. More specifically, participants noted that the opportunity to dialogue with other African American was a very helpful element in the workshop. Other information was concluded from the process data and is discussed in detail. Limitations and implications are discussed.

This group therapy program is based on 16 years of research and has been completed by over 1000 adolescent girls and young women. It can be effectively delivered by real world providers, such as school counselors, nurses, and teachers. This facilitator guide provides all the information needed to successfully implement the program, including explanation of Cognitive Dissonance theory, session outlines complete with exercises, and recommendations on how to train group leaders and recruit participants.

This book was born out of a transaction between frustration and optimism. The frustrations reflected the limitations of current knowledge about eating problems and disorders. Etiological "causes" which are sensitive and specific to eating disorders have been elusive. Although there is some understanding of risk factors, little is known about protective factors. This has made prevention, among other things, difficult. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying the association between risk factors and disordered eating are poorly understood. For example, it is known that women are at greater risk than men are, but clinicians are hard- pressed to get beyond gender-based speculations and demonstrate why this is true. The optimism grows from familiarity with the field of developmental psychopathology. It seems evident that this approach has much to offer the field of eating disorders. This book is an early step in the integration of developmental psychopathology into theorizing, research, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders. Chapters provide information on the significance of body image and eating disorders, the intervention theory, the evidence base which supports the theory, recruitment and training procedures, solutions to common challenges, and a new program aimed at reducing obesity onset, as well as intervention scripts and participant handouts. The Body Project is the only currently available eating disorder prevention program that has been shown to reduce risk for onset of eating disorders and received support in trials conducted by several independent research groups. The group sessions are brief and fun to lead, and this guide provides all of the necessary information to walk clinicians, teachers, counselors, and volunteers through leading the program for vulnerable young women.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of a preventative curriculum entitled Eating Disorders: Physical, Social, and Emotional Consequences, A High School Curriculum about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating (EDPSEC), a preventative curriculum for eating disorders. Participants included an experimental group of 72 students enrolled in a ninth grade health class and a control group of 39 ninth grade students enrolled in a physical education class. The research examined the administration integrity of the curriculum and participating students' change in eating attitudes and behaviors according to group membership. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Eating Survey (ES) were utilized in a pre-post test design to determine the participants' change. There was a high correlation between the students' scores on the ES and the EAT-26 (r = .873). Results indicated low treatment integrity and no significant change on students' EAT-26 or ES scores according to group. However due to low treatment integrity this study was unable to determine the effectiveness of this EDPSEC curriculum. There was a high correlation between the students' scores on the ES and the EAT-26 (r = .873).

Book excerpt: The present study seeks of investigate the effectiveness of Girls Growing in Wellness and Balance, a parent workshop program designed to reduce family risk factors that are associated with mental illness in general and eating disorders (ED) in particular. Eating disorders are a significant mental health concern for females in the Western society that are highly comorbid with medical problems, substance abuse, depression and suicide attempts. Success of prevention efforts to date has been mixed. In this study, a biopsychosocial approach is adopted to conceptualize eating disorders and the Maudsley method of ED treatment is utilized to create an evidence based prevention program. It was hypothesized that including parents in a prevention program will lead to greater reduction in eating disorder and anxiety symptomatology, than including children alone. Results indicate that while the child-only program resulted in a significant reduction of drive for thinness and body dissatisfaction, the parent component did not have a significant additional benefit in symptom reduction. Possible reasons for the findings and directions for future research in the area of ED prevention are discussed.

Students were recruited by convenience sampling from a California State University Long Beach general education class, Nutrition 132. A pre- and post-test combining two different questionnaires was used before and after implementation of The Body Project 4 All intervention program. Paired samples and independent samples t -tests data analysis demonstrated that the program can significantly decrease eating disorder symptoms and appearance internalization, with no significant differences between men and women. These results demonstrated that a cognitive dissonance-based approach can be effective in prevention efforts for both genders.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a five week long preventative disordered eating (DE) support program on Kent State University's Campus for women concerned with body image and DE. The participants (n=5) were full or part-time female students on Kent State University's main campus that wanted to learn more about healthy eating or that felt they have a problem with DE. Criteria that excluded a participant was a previous clinical diagnosis of an eating disorder or a score on the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT 26) score above 26, being under the age of 18, or being male or faculty. Instruments used to measure changes in body image and disordered eating perceptions were the Eating Attitudes Test, ORTO15, a self-efficacy and body esteem survey. A dependent t-test was used to determine differences between pre- and post-test scores for each instrument used. There were no significant differences found in the ORTO 15, self-efficacy, or body esteem surveys (p 0.05). A significant difference was found between scores for the EAT 26, which shows a decrease in DE behaviors with small group intervention (p 0.001). Intervention groups such as these may be able to prevent the onset of eating disorders by decreasing the behaviors, feelings, and outlooks of participants with body image disorders or disordered eating behaviors.

Research-based prevention programs are becoming more and more important as this number rises. This study qualitatively examined the effectiveness of a prevention program called Eating Disorders: Physical, Social, and Emotional Consequences, A High School Curriculum about Anorexia, Bulimia, and Compulsive Eating (EDPSEC). Study participants included 10 female students in a ninth grade health class in a junior high school in Utah. The integrity of curriculum administration was analyzed and interviews were conducted. The aim of the interviews was to determine what students who received the curriculum felt about the program and eating disorders in general. Results indicate that while treatment integrity was considered low (45%), students still found value in the curriculum and enjoyed participating in it. While a wilder sample size and concurrent quantitative data are needed to further support these findings, this student indicates that the EDPSEC program is a viable option for implementing an eating disorder prevention curriculum in the secondary school setting.

A couple-based eating disorder prevention program was developed based on the dual pathway model of eating disorders and some efficacy has been established. The current study explored the program's mechanisms of change by testing mediators (thin ideal internalization and body dissatisfaction) expected to mediate the effects of the program on three outcome variables (dieting, negative affect, and bulimic symptoms). Although none of the mediated paths were significant, results of the study were overall consistent with previous research and provided further support for the efficacy of the prevention program. In addition to these variables, effects of the prevention on relationship variables (relationship satisfaction, attachment anxiety and avoidance, and commitment) were explored. Finally, relationship intimacy, measured by an event-contingent interaction, was found to have an effect on an important eating disorder risk factor. Implications of the present study and future directions for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders are discussed.

Maladaptive use of social networking sites (SNSs) is associated with increased eating disorder risk factors and symptomology among young women, suggesting that eating disorder prevention programs targeting this behavior may be beneficial. The present study tested a modified version of the Body Project that was shortened to a single, 2-hour session to address attrition problems of previous versions and adapted to include elements specifically targeting maladaptive SNS use. Female undergraduates (N = 128) were blindly assigned to a high-dissonance intervention, a low-dissonance intervention, or a no-treatment control group during a two-step enrollment process. Using a repeated measures design to assess for differential change in outcomes (i.e., thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, negative affect, eating disorder symptomology) between conditions across time from baseline to posttest and 1-month follow-up, a 3 (Time) x 3 (Condition) mixed factorial multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) identified a significant Time x Condition interaction. Notably, follow-up analyses indicated participants in both active conditions experienced significant decreases in eating disorder symptomology and multiple eating disorder risk factors across time. Against expectations, the active conditions did not produce significant reductions on any of the measured outcomes relative to controls at posttest or 1-month follow-up. Results are promising in that they suggest minimal exposure to this modified intervention can produce positive effects which may enhance the feasibility and accessibility of eating disorder prevention options for busy college students.
