Cultural factors result in reduced utilization of mental health services by Asian American adults. Not much work has been done on the predictive nature of this relationship between ethnicity and mental health care utilization. The aim of the present study was to identify this relationship within the Asian American population. This research can be used to develop policies and interventions to counter this problem. Data from the California Health Interview Survey (2014) were analyzed to gain insight into the predictive relationship between Asian ethnicity and access to mental health care in adults in California. It was seen that limited English proficiency were significantly associated with reduced utilization of services, whereas age and gender were not found to be a predictive indicator of mental health services utilization in Asian American adults.

Differences in health by racial and ethnic status could be increasingly consequential for health policy and programs. Such differences are not simply a matter of education or ability to pay for health care. For instance, Asian Americans and Hispanics appear to be in better health, on a number of indicators, than White Americans, despite, on average, lower socioeconomic status. The reasons are complex, including possible roles for such factors as selective migration, risk behaviors, exposure to various stressors, patient attitudes, and geographic variation in health care. This volume, produced by a multidisciplinary panel, considers such possible explanations for racial and ethnic health differentials within an integrated framework. It provides a concise summary of available research and lays out a research agenda to address the many uncertainties in current knowledge. It recommends, for instance, looking at health differentials across the life course and deciphering the links between factors presumably producing differentials and biopsychosocial mechanisms that lead to impaired health.

The current literature on this population is limited, and it is even more limited on each of the subgroups in this population, particularly concerning mental health issues and factors that influence them. This research project reviewed an existing literature and that found that gender, age, living arrangement, education, socioeconomic status, marital status, length of residency, language competency in English, acculturation, community service and support, general health status, self-perceived health status, illness, functional status, health beliefs and behaviors, interpersonal support, family support, and stress and coping were factors that influenced depression and anxiety among older Asian-American adults. Another purpose of this research project was to identify various interventions that evaluations suggest are effective for this population when it comes to mental health. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), reminiscence, Qigong, horticultural therapy, and relaxation response-based group have been effective. This research will present an evaluation on the utilization of those interventions, as well as recommendations for future social work practice, policy and research.

Results indicate that being younger, having health insurance, having self-perceived need for mental health services, having mental health service need perceived by others, and a greater number of probable psychiatric disorders were associated with the use of mental health services among Latinos with mental illness. Among Asians with mental illness, being younger and having self-perceived need for mental health services were related to the use of mental health services. Among both Latino and Asian mental health service users, having self-perceived need for mental health services was related to a greater number of visits to service providers in a 12 month period. Among Latino mental health service users, being younger, not having health insurance, and having a lower level of family cohesion were associated with dropouts from mental health services. Among Asian mental health service users, being younger, having better English proficiency, and a greater number of probable psychiatric disorders were related to dropouts from mental health services. In each chapter the author reviews and criticizes the research to date these subjects. The author's conclusions include: 1) the rate of mental disorders among Asian Americans has been underestimated; 2) the expression of symptoms is influenced by culture; and 3) the Asian American family has both positive and negative effects on mental health. While the author only briefly mentions the special problems of Asian American refugees, the mental health issues discussed in the book are applicable to all Asian American immigrants, including refugees.
