Book Synopsis Seed-borne plant virus diseases by : K. Subramanya Sastry
Download or read book Seed-borne plant virus diseases written by K. Subramanya Sastry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-05 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeds provide an efficient means in disseminating plant virus and viroid diseases. The success of modern agriculture depends on pathogen free seed with high yielding character and in turn disease management. There is a serious scientific concern about the transmission of plant viruses sexually through seed and asexually through plant propagules. The present book provides the latest information along with the total list of seed transmitted virus and viroid diseases at global level including, the yield losses, diagnostic techniques, mechanism of seed transmission, epidemiology and virus disease management aspects. Additional information is also provided on the transmission of plant virus and virus-like diseases through vegetative propagules. It is also well known that seed transmitted viruses are introduced into new countries and continents during large-scale traffic movements through infected germplasm and plant propogules. The latest diagnostic molecular techniques in different virus-host combinations along with disease management measures have been included. The book shall be a good reference source and also a text book to the research scientists, teachers, students of plant pathology, agriculture, horticulture, life sciences, green house managers, professional entrepreneurs, persons involved in quarantines and seed companies. This book has several important features of seed transmitted virus diseases and is a good informative source and thus deserves a place in almost all university libraries, seed companies and research organizations.
Book Synopsis Disease Resistance in Wheat by : Indu Sharma
Download or read book Disease Resistance in Wheat written by Indu Sharma and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disease resistance is one of the major factors that can be improved to sustain yield potential in cultivated crops. This book looks at disease resistance in wheat, concentrating on all the economically important diseases - their economic impact and geographical spread, breeding for resistance, pathogen variability, resistance mechanisms and recent advances made on resistance genes. Newer strategies for identifying resistance genes and identify resistance mechanisms are discussed, including cloning, gene transfer and the use of genetically modified plants. It is suitable for researchers and stu.

Book Synopsis Return to Resistance by : Raoul A. Robinson
Download or read book Return to Resistance written by Raoul A. Robinson and published by IDRC. This book was released on 1996 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Silent Spring, Raoul Robinson's Return to Resistance calls for a revolution. Traditional plant breeding techniques have led us to depend more and more on chemical pesticides to protect ourcrops. Return to Resistance shows gardeners, farmers, and plant breeders how to use a long-neglected technique to create hardy new plant varieties that are naturally resistant to pests and disease. Horizontal resistance breeding has been largely ignored in this century due to the popularity and apparent successes of the Mendelian geneticists. However the colossal, unrecognized failure of m.
Book Synopsis Electron Microscopy of Plant Pathogens by : Kurt Mendgen
Download or read book Electron Microscopy of Plant Pathogens written by Kurt Mendgen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants, fungi, and viruses were among the first biological objects studied with an electron microscope. One of the two first instruments built by Siemens was used by Helmut Ruska, a brother of Ernst Ruska, the pioneer in constructing electron microscopes. H. Ruska published numerous papers on different biological objects in 1939. In one of these, the pictures by G. A. Kausche, E. Pfankuch, and H. Ruska of tobacco mosaic virus opened a new age in microscopy. The main problem was then as it still is today, to obtain an appropriate preparation of the specimen for observation in the electron microscope. Beam damage and specimen thickness were the first obstacles to be met. L. Marton in Brussels not only built his own instrument, but also made considerable progress in specimen preparation by introducing the impregnation of samples with heavy metals to obtain useful contrast. His pictures of the bird nest orchid root impregnated with osmium were revolutionary when published in 1934. It is not the place here to recall the different techniques which were developed in the subsequent years to attain the modern knowledge on the fine structure of plant cells and of different plant pathogens. The tremendous progress obtained with tobacco mosaic virus is reflected in the chapter by M. Wurtz on the fine structure of viruses in this Volume. New cytochemical and immunological techniques considerably surpass the morphological information obtained from the pathogens, especially at the host-parasite interface.
Book Synopsis Natural and Engineered Resistance to Plant Viruses by : Michael Buchmeier
Download or read book Natural and Engineered Resistance to Plant Viruses written by Michael Buchmeier and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are a group of illnesses that are caused by several distinct families of viruses. While some types of hemorrhagic fever viruses can cause relatively mild illnesses, many of these viruses cause severe life-threatening disease. Some examples include: Lassa fever, Marburg virus, Ebola virus, Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, Korean hemorrhagic fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Dengue hemorrhagic fever. No current treatment can cure viral hemorrhagic fevers, and immunizations exist for only two (yellow fever and Argentine hemorrhagic fever) of the many VHFs. Researchers are working to develop other vaccines, but in the meantime, the best approach is prevention. This volume will provide a review of what is known to date on these virus families as well as highlighting recent advances and future needs. Key features: * Provides comprehensive overview of what is known to date, recent advances and future needs * Examines transmission and risk factors * Highlights what has been done to help in outbreak control * Discusses the need for vaccines and antivirals
