Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Annotated Bibliography on Detached Breakwaters and Artificial Headlands In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the potential use of detached breakwaters for shore stabilization. However, lack of design experience with these structures has hindered their widespread application in beach erosion projects. Engineers are often uncertain about how to approach the design problem because of the many unknowns involved. In addition, there are few existing structures that can be studied to provide prototype data. This annotated bibliography is presented to assist in the develop ment of reliable design procedures for detached breakwaters. The refer onces deal with topics which can be usefully applied to the design problem although many are not limited solely to the subject of detached break waters. For instance, the wave dissipation characteristics of submerged breakwaters are discussed in several papers. An understanding of these characteristics would be necessary for the design of some detached break waters. Papers on wave diffraction, reflection, transmission, and over topping are also included. The bibliography is not comprehensive in these areas but an attempt has been made to identify some significant works with potential applications. Several papers describe the use of detached breakwaters as sand traps for navigation projects. Although this use does not fall within the realm of shore protection, these structures do affect the coastal pro cesses in the same way as shore protection breakwaters. Four single detached breakwaters and six segmented breakwater systems in the United States are reviewed. Based on this review, the performance of breakwaters in other countries, and general knowledge of coastal processes, the implementation and design of breakwaters are discussed. General guidance is presented for the design of detached breakwaters and several design examples are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coast Erosion and Protection This volume it is hoped will prove a useful contribution to the important branch of Civil Engineering known as Maritime Engineering. It gives a résumé of the erosion and accretion that is taking place around the coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, and treats comprehensively of all forms of sea-defences, the merits and demerits of each type being fully discussed. Special consideration is given to methods of construction in reinforced concrete and comparisons of costs are stated. The action of sea water on concrete is a matter of such great importance that the author has carried o'ut numerous experiments with a view to preventing as far as possible the destruction taking place, and the results are set out herein. The action of fresh water is similarly dealt with, and careful considera tion is given to the quality of materials and to preserva tives against decay and corrosion The important subject of Harbour Projections and their effect upon the travel of sand and shingle is briefly referred to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the gamut of coastal hazards that result from short-term low-frequency events and have high-magnitude and far-reaching impacts on coastal zones the world over. Much of the world’s population now lives in low-lying coastal zones that are inherently vulnerable to natural hazards such as flooding from hurricanes, tropical storms and northeastern storm surges; shoreline (beach and dune) erosion; cliff and bluff failures; and saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers used for drinking water supplies. In addition to the usual range of hydrometeorological disasters in coastal zones, this book covers tsunami impacts and warning systems as well as global perspectives of sea-level rise impacts and human perceptions of potential vulnerabilities resulting from rip currents that cause many drownings each year on beaches. Today, the use of numerical models that help predict vulnerabilities and provide a basis for shore protection measures is important in modern scientific and engineering systems. Final considerations focus on human actions in the form of the urbanization and industrialization of the coast, shore protection measures, and indicate how environmental degradation around coastal conurbations exacerbates the potential for unwanted impacts. Strategies for environmental management in coastal zones, from low-lying wetlands to high cliffs and rocky promontories, are highlighted as a means of living in harmony with Nature and not trying to conquer it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working with nature - and not against it - is a global trend in coastal management. This ethnography of coastal protection follows the increasingly popular approach of "soft" protection to the Aotearoa New Zealand coast. Friederike Gesing analyses a political controversy over hard and soft protection measures, and introduces a growing community of practice involved in projects of working with nature. Dune restoration volunteers, coastal management experts, surfer-scientists, and Maori conservationists are engaged in projects ranging from do-it-yourself erosion control, to the reconstruction of native nature, and soft engineering "in concert with natural processes". With soft protection, Gesing argues, we can witness a new sociotechnical imaginary in the making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.
