Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to provide data and procedures for parametric analysis of radio communications between dispersed field of ASW buoys and an on-water or airborne aircraft. The analysis procedures also apply to communications links between buoys and a seacraft mother vehicle. In the subject type of weapons system the communications links rarely exceed a range of 200 miles. Within this range, all practical propagation modes and communications variables have been consolidated in simplified parametric form. The basic purpose of this study is to enable optimization of the communications link parameters. In any system evaluation or design, optimization is accomplished by assessment of trade-offs as the system parameters are varied within the applicable constraints. The situations where such optimization is desirable fall into three categories: evaluation of proposed systems, modification of existing systems, and design of new systems. The study defines optimization categories, introduces and explains the transmission equation, and presents a procedural format for parametric optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about the key elements required for designing, building and controlling effective artificial swarms comprised of multiple moving physical agents. Therefore this book presents the fundamentals of each of those key elements in the particular frame of dynamic swarming, specifically exposing the profound connections between these elements and establish some general design principles for swarming behaviors. This scientific endeavor requires an inter-disciplinary approach: biomimetic inspiration from ethology and ecology, study of social information flow, analysis of temporal and adaptive signaling network of interaction, considerations of control of networked real-time systems, and lastly, elements of complex adaptive dynamical systems. This book offers a completely new perspective on the scientific understanding of dynamic collective behaviors thanks to its multi-disciplinary approach and its focus on artificial swarm of physical agents. Two of the key problems in understanding the emergence of swarm intelligent behaviors are identifying the social interaction rules a.k.a. the behavioral algorithm and uncovering how information flows between swarming agents. While most books about swarm dynamics have been focusing on the former, this book emphasizes the much-less discussed topic of distributed information flow, always with the aim of establishing general design principles.

Book excerpt: A practical guide to the latest remote and in situ techniques used to measure sediments, quantify seabed characteristics, and understand physical properties of water and sediments and transport mechanisms in estuaries and coastal waters. Covering a broad range of topics from global reference frames and bathymetric surveying methods to the use of remote sensing for determining surface-water variables, enough background is included to explain how each technology functions. The advantages and disadvantages of each technology are explained, and a review of recent fieldwork experiments demonstrates how modern methods apply in real-life estuarine and coastal campaigns. Clear explanations of physical processes show links between different disciplines, making the book ideal for students and researchers in the environmental sciences, marine biology, chemistry and geology, whose work relies on an understanding of the physical environment and the way it is changing as a result of climate change, engineering and other influences.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design features of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Air/Sea Interaction (A/S-I) buoy are described, and construction, testing, and deployment experiences are related. This two-attitude buoy is similar to the MIT/Navy buoy which it replaces, but it accommodates more instruments and can be towed through shallower water. The BNL A/S-I buoy can be broken down into two, three, or four sections to facilitate overland transport. Compressed air is stored aboard and the controls for deploying, trimming, and recovering the buoy are centralized on the superstructure and are perpetually above water level. The ballast control plumbing is entirely within the hull for maximum protection. The buoy also has a propane storage and distribution system and a 40-watt thermoelectric generator for powering instruments. Two buoys were built and tested in 1978, and one buoy was deployed in 1979 and is in operation off the south coast of Long Island.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system concept has been developed by Viasat, Inc. and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution for improving the data telemetry bandwidth available on ocean buoys. This concept utilizes existing communications satellites as data relay stations and mechanically steered antenna arrays to achieve increased data rates and improved power efficiency needed for ocean applications. This report describes an initial feasibility and design study to determine if a mechanically steered antenna array can meet the requirements of open ocean buoy applications. To meet the system requirements, an 18-element microstrip antenna (9-element transmit, 9-element receive) was designed and fabricated under subcontract by Seavey Engineering Associates, Inc. It operates in the 4-6 GHz frequency band (C-band) and provides 14 dB of gain. The % power beamwidth is j150 in azimuth and elevation. This antenna design, in conjunction with a simple rotating mount, was used to evaluate the potential of this approach to keep a geostationary satellite in view when mounted on an ocean buoy. The evaluation is based on laboratory measurements using a magnetic compass and a small stepper motor to maintain antenna orientation while the complete assembly was rotated and tilted at speeds similar to what would be expected on an offshore buoy equipped with a stabilizing wind vane.

Book excerpt: An experimental towable electronic communications buoy is described which provides a means for a submerged submarine to communicate with surface craft, aircraft, and other submerged submarines. A size No. 5 OROPESA type minesweeping float is used as a basic vehicle and modified to mount various antennas and their associated equipment. The buoy has been installed and tested on the USS BLENNY using HF, UHF, and IFF antennas. Satisfactory communications were established from sea to sea and sea to air, and the buoy displayed desirable hydrodynamic properties.
