Book Synopsis Practical Intranet Development by : John Colby

Book excerpt: An intranet can be a powerful tool. A well-designed intranet becomes the key resource and communications platform for your organization, used by members of staff as their first destination for information. In contrast, a poorly designed intranet will sit unused, accumulating useless information, and eating up IT budgets. So, how do you avoid this situation, and make sure you design the most useful, and usable, intranet? This book takes you through the steps you need to take to make an invaluable intranet, from identifying your users' needs and building an indispensable tool, to marketing the results. It guides you through the problems that may occur, passing on invaluable advice from people who have been through the process before. We start by setting the scene, giving an overview of what intranets are and how to justify it to your organization. We then give you a rundown of the main areas you'll need to think about when developing an intranet, covering browsers, development techniques, usability, content management, security, and internal marketing. Finally, we'll take a look at what to do when the Intranet moves beyond its original function, looking at remote access, extranets, and what to do when the Intranet gets too big.

Book Synopsis Designing and Developing Library Intranets by : Nina McHale
Download or read book Designing and Developing Library Intranets written by Nina McHale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past decade, e-mail has been the preferred method of internal communication in libraries. However, relying on email for organizational knowledge management seems a bit like storing birth certificates, car titles, and deeds in a pile of junk mail: the important documents are lost amongst other items of only minimal or fleeting importance. A successful intranet can provide a secure place for information exchange and storage; however, in order to be successful, a library intranet must be easy to use, have the functionality desired by its users, and be integrated into the daily workflows of all library staff. Accomplishing this can be challenging for web librarians. The book covers, among other topics, third-party hosting; the use of freely available blog and wiki software for internal staff communication; and developing library intranets in ColdFusion, Microsoft SharePoint, and the open source Drupal content management system (CMS). More importantly, the authors examine in detail the human factors, which, when not thoroughly addressed, are more often the cause for a failed intranet than the technology platform. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Web Librarianship.

Book Synopsis Why Intranets Fail (and How to Fix Them) by : Luke Tredinnick
Download or read book Why Intranets Fail (and How to Fix Them) written by Luke Tredinnick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Intranets Fail (and How to Fix Them) is a practical guide to some of the common problems associated with Intranets, and solutions to those problems. The book takes a unique end-user perspective on the role of intranets within organisations. It explores how the needs of the end-user very often conflict with the needs of the organisation, creating a confusion of purpose that impedes the success of intranet. It sets out clearly why intranets cannot be thought of as merely internal Internets, and require their own management strategies and approaches. The book draws on a wide range of examples and analogies from a variety of contexts to set-out in a clear and concise way the issues at the heart of failing intranets. It presents step-by-step solutions with universal application. Each issue discussed is accompanied by short practical suggestions for improved intranet design and architecture. Jargon-free and aimed at information professionals with sole/mixed responsibilities Draws many examples from broader library management contexts Clearly distinguishes between intranet and Internet technologies
Download or read book Web Work written by Chun Wei Choo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together three great motifs of the network society: the seeking and using of information by individuals and groups; the creation and application of knowledge in organizations; and the fundamental transformation of these activities as they are enacted on the Internet and the World Wide Web. Of the three, the study of how individuals and groups seek information probably has the longest history, beginning with the early "information needs and uses" studies soon after the Second World War. The study of organizations as knowledge-based social systems is much more recent, and really gained momentum only within the last decade or so. The study of the World Wide Web as information and communication media is younger still, but has generated tremendous excitement, partly because it has the potential to reconfigure the ways in which people seek information and use knowledge, and partly because it offers new methods of analyzing and measuring how in fact such information and knowledge work gets done. As research endeavors, these streams overlap and share conceptual constructs, perspectives, and methods of analysis. Although these overlaps and shared concerns are sometimes apparent in the published research, there have been few attempts to connect these ideas explicitly and identify cross-disciplinary themes. This book is an attempt to fill this void. The three authors of this book possess contrasting backgrounds and thus adopt complementary vantage points to observe information seeking and knowledge work.

Book Synopsis Communications Systems Management Handbook, Sixth Edition by : Anura Guruge
Download or read book Communications Systems Management Handbook, Sixth Edition written by Anura Guruge and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-10-25 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just a decade ago, many industry luminaries predicted the collapse of the centralized data center and IT structure. In its place would be a more decentralized client/server model built upon the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) networking architecture. However, client/server never fully realized all of its promises, and OSI floundered. Now, instead of client/server and OSI, we have the Web-based model and TCP/IP. Together, Web-oriented technologies (i.e., browsers, web servers, HTML, Java) and TCP/IP are completely changing how the enterprise views its network. Instead of serving as primarily an internal utility, the enterprise network is now a vital means of delivering products and services and of tying an enterprise more closely to its customers, partners and suppliers. The impact to the very structure of the enterprise network could not be more profound. Providing extensive coverage of planning, networking, LANs, systems management, communications issues and trends, Communications Systems Management Handbook, 6th Edition is your most reliable source for solid, dependable solutions to real-world data communications problems. The tips, strategies, and case-studies provided do more than just save you time and money. They also save your data communications network, and with it your professional life. This new edition of the Communications Systems Management Handbook provides you with detailed information on the different facets of change in the enterprise network: Enterprise network architectures LAN and campus networking Remote access WAN Data centers Client and servers Security Network Management What's more, the New Edition is dramatically restructured, providing a more logical grouping of articles into discrete sections that bring focus to a particular enterprise networking topic. In addition, the content of this edition has been substantially updated. Almost three-quarters of the articles are new to this edition. The common theme throughout the handbook is the change that the enterprise network is undergoing and how to manage it. The handbook's generous use of illustrations simplifies the technical workings of networks and communications systems. The comprehensive index makes it easy to find the topics you want and related topics. And because each chapter is written by an expert with first-hand experience in data communications, no other book gives you such a full range of perspectives and explanations of the technical, planning, administrative, personnel, and budget challenges of the communication manager's job. Covering everything from electronic commerce to multimedia, from system design and cost allocation to Ethernet switches and the impact of virtual private networks, this is your one-stop source for the best, most essential data communications expertise to be found anywhere. The Communications Systems Management Handbook serves as an information tool for proven advice and methods on managing network services and costs, creating networking solutions, and preparing for advanced communications network technologies.
