Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation works towards obtaining a lightweight, cost- effective pressurized fuel tank for a hybrid sounding rocket with a capacity of 20 kg of either Nitrous Oxide or Hydrogen Peroxide. Trade studies result in analyzing a graphite epoxy prepreg composite tank with unidirectional lamina designed for a burst pressure of 2000 psi. The analysis resulted in a pressure vessel in the shape of a cylinder with spherical ends. The tank's diameter is 8 inches and the total length is 5 feet. The analysis further determined the fuel tank's layered construction of 6 plies oriented 0 degrees and 90 degrees each, with 10 plies oriented at 45 degrees. This gave a total of 22 plies for a thickness of 0.11 inches with a tank factor of 18785 and a mass of 3.7 kg. Hand lay-up manufacturing techniques are discussed for composite fuel tanks as well as mold and tooling comparisons.

Book excerpt: All aspects of fuel products and systems including fuel handling, quantity gauging and management functions for both commercial (civil) and military applications. The fuel systems on board modern aircraft are multi-functional, fully integrated complex networks. They are designed to provide a proper and reliable management of fuel resources throughout all phases of operation, notwithstanding changes in altitude or speed, as well as to monitor system functionality and advise the flight crew of any operational anomalies that may develop. Collates together a wealth of information on fuel system design that is currently disseminated throughout the literature. Authored by leading industry experts from Airbus and Parker Aerospace. Includes chapters on basic system functions, features and functions unique to military aircraft, fuel handling, fuel quantity gauging and management, fuel systems safety and fuel systems design and development. Accompanied by a companion website housing a MATLAB/SIMULINK model of a modern aircraft fuel system that allows the user to set up flight conditions, investigate the effects of equipment failures and virtually fly preset missions. Aircraft Fuel Systems provides a timely and invaluable resource for engineers, project and programme managers in the equipment supply and application communities, as well as for graduate and postgraduate students of mechanical and aerospace engineering. It constitutes an invaluable addition to the established Wiley Aerospace Series.

Book excerpt: With his work, Martin Nebe provides principal insights into the mechanical response of composite pressure vessels subjected to internal pressure. By establishing and validating an in situ characterization methodology, the vessel's geometry, its deformation behavior and the damage evolution process under internal pressure loading become accessible. This not only permits to trace back certain phenomena related to the manufacturing of these components but also allows to verify analytical and numerical modeling strategies. The exercised correlation of predicted and experimental results delivers detailed insights into design considerations to composite pressure vessels such as the definition of stacking sequence. The transfer of knowledge to a fullscale vessel geometry, which is representative for the use in fuel cell electric vehicles underlines the industrial application of this work. By combining numerical modeling, filament winding and experimental characterization, this work provides a sound foundation for future developments in the area of composite pressure vessels used for hydrogen storage. About the author Martin Nebe worked as Ph.D. candidate at the Fuel Cell Department of an automotive company. In cooperation with the Department of Materials Test Engineering (WPT) at the TU Dortmund University, he completed his Ph.D. about the characterization, the analysis and the design of composite pressure vessels used for hydrogen storage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques for the design, analysis and the construction of composite pressure vessels have been established since the 1960's. Their development has become refined and the composite materials employed for their construction have seen major improvement. The one area where only marginal advancement has been achieved is with the ultra-high pressure applications. Vessels designed and constructed to operate in the 20,000-25,000 psi (140-170 MPa) range have been few in number and poor in efficiency. Applications for such high pressure containment vessels are varied but one potentially marketable idea is to develop these vessels with the capacity to hold hydrogen and methane (natural gas) at liquid densities yet ambient temperature. These could be used as fuel tanks in both combustion and fuel cell powered vehicles, filled at service stations with cryogenic liquid in a manner identical to the filling of conventional propane bottles. Safety requirements demand burst pressures from twice to three times operating conditions and this leads to the realm of thick-walled design. For the anisotropic composite materials the stresses through the wall thickness tend to fall much more rapidly than with their isotropic metallic counterparts. This effect leads to a greatly reduced vessel efficiency quotient PV / W . To date, little is understood about the phenomena underlying this rapid decay in load bearing or how it can be counteracted. The work performed analyses the corresponding anisotropic elasticity problem to determine the exact nature of the challenge and then addresses a solution based on variable elasticity to counter this intrinsic behaviour. The method employed seeks to elicit appropriate through-thickness material property variation rates to attain a more level stress distribution (or incipient failure throughout the wall) while restricting property changes to values attainable in commercially available composites. A computer code based on closed form elasticity solutions complete with damage/failure modeling and graphic interactive editing was written to carry out the computations. This tool enables the development of application specific designs. A prototype vessel is constructed and data from this and other vessels are checked to see how well the computations correlate to the theory advanced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Mechanics of Composite Materials and Structures analyzes contemporary theoretical models at the micro- and macro levels of material structure. Its coverage of practical methods and approaches, experimental results, and optimization of composite material properties and structural component performance can be put to practical use by researchers and engineers. The fourth edition has been updated to reflect new manufacturing processes (such as 3D printing of two matrix composite structural elements) and new theories developed by the authors. The authors have expanded the content of advanced topic areas with new chapters on axisymmetric deformation of composite shells of revolution, composite pressure vessels, and anisogrid composite lattice structures. This revision includes enhanced sections on optimal design of laminated plates and additional examples of the finite element modelling of composite structures and numerical methods. Advanced Mechanics of Composite Materials and Structures, Fourth edition is unique in that it addresses a wide range of advanced problems in the mechanics of composite materials, such as the physical statistical aspects of fiber strength, stress diffusion in composites with damaged fibers, nonlinear elasticity, and composite pressure vessels to name a few. It also provides the foundation for traditional basic composite material mechanics, making it one of the most comprehensive references on this topic. Presents advanced material on composite structures, including chapters on composite pressure vessels and axisymmetric deformation of composite shells of revolution Provides the applications of composite materials to spacecraft, aircraft and marine included throughout Practical examples of analysis and design of real composite structural components
