Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest edition of a popular text and reference on database research, with substantial new material and revision; covers classical literature and recent hot topics. Lessons from database research have been applied in academic fields ranging from bioinformatics to next-generation Internet architecture and in industrial uses including Web-based e-commerce and search engines. The core ideas in the field have become increasingly influential. This text provides both students and professionals with a grounding in database research and a technical context for understanding recent innovations in the field. The readings included treat the most important issues in the database area--the basic material for any DBMS professional. This fourth edition has been substantially updated and revised, with 21 of the 48 papers new to the edition, four of them published for the first time. Many of the sections have been newly organized, and each section includes a new or substantially revised introduction that discusses the context, motivation, and controversies in a particular area, placing it in the broader perspective of database research. Two introductory articles, never before published, provide an organized, current introduction to basic knowledge of the field; one discusses the history of data models and query languages and the other offers an architectural overview of a database system. The remaining articles range from the classical literature on database research to treatments of current hot topics, including a paper on search engine architecture and a paper on application servers, both written expressly for this edition. The result is a collection of papers that are seminal and also accessible to a reader who has a basic familiarity with database systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Parallel sorting algorithms' is an overview over sorting algorithms for various parallel computer architectures. After introducing the problem of sorting, giving a taxonomy of parallel computer architectures and discussing efficiency concepts in parallel algorithms, various sorting methods on SIMD and MIMD computers are introduced. The author describes and analyzes sorting algorithms on sorting networks, vector machines, the perfect-shuffle, mesh- and cube-connected computers, tree machines and asynchronous MIMD machines. Furthermore, there are chapters on parallel external sorting and general lower bounds for the problem of parallel sorting. The book is very readable and serves as an excellent means to get an overview over methods to solve the important problem of parallel sorting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Workshop on Database Machines in Munich is the third of its kind, preceeded by the meetings in Florence (Sept. 81) and San Diego (Sept. 82). The workshop is aimed at providing an interchange of ideas and experience on computer systems designed to perform database operations more efficiently than general purpose computers with a software database management system. Many proposals have been published during the past 10 years, but now several systems have been built and practically implemented and some are even commercially available, so that confrontation with the real world is starting to occur. The kinds of question which arise during this phase of coming to maturity are those involved with evaluation and measurement. The emphasis of the workshop is therefore on performance evaluation and the respective modelling techniques and methodology. Data flow and other new topics (including algorithms) are also treated with respect to performance and efficiency. We are glad to be able to include some papers on existing commercial products - from both the designer and the user viewpoints. We hope to encourage critical comments in this field and have arranged a session with the title "Where Database Machines Are Going" - to be followed by a panel dis~ussion.

Book Synopsis Parallel Sorting Algorithms by : Selim G. Akl
Download or read book Parallel Sorting Algorithms written by Selim G. Akl and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel Sorting Algorithms explains how to use parallel algorithms to sort a sequence of items on a variety of parallel computers. The book reviews the sorting problem, the parallel models of computation, parallel algorithms, and the lower bounds on the parallel sorting problems. The text also presents twenty different algorithms, such as linear arrays, mesh-connected computers, cube-connected computers. Another example where algorithm can be applied is on the shared-memory SIMD (single instruction stream multiple data stream) computers in which the whole sequence to be sorted can fit in the respective primary memories of the computers (random access memory), or in a single shared memory. SIMD processors communicate through an interconnection network or the processors communicate through a common and shared memory. The text also investigates the case of external sorting in which the sequence to be sorted is bigger than the available primary memory. In this case, the algorithms used in external sorting is very similar to those used to describe internal sorting, that is, when the sequence can fit in the primary memory, The book explains that an algorithm can reach its optimum possible operating time for sorting when it is running on a particular set of architecture, depending on a constant multiplicative factor. The text is suitable for computer engineers and scientists interested in parallel algorithms.
