Book excerpt: Capital markets, both for debt and equity securities, have allowed firms to secure funding for productive uses while providing investors with opportunities for portfolio diversification. The importance of capital markets for the development of economies and for the betterment of society cannot be overstated. This is just as true in emerging economies with free markets, such as those found in Latin America, as it is in developed markets. However, capital markets in the region are not being utilized to the fullest. The idea behind this collection of articles is to offer a primer on the development of local capital markets in several select countries in Latin America. We discuss not only their history and current status but also their future. To this end, seven authors contributed to this project, each writing about one of seven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay. Each author decided which issues they believe matter most to the progress of their local capital markets. Some authors chose a qualitative and institutional description of local markets, whereas others adopted a more quantitative approach.

Book excerpt: This series of books brings together results of an extensive research programme on aspects of the national systems of innovation in the five BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It provides a comprehensive and comparative examination of the challenges and opportunities faced by these dynamic and emerging economies. In discussing the impact of innovation with respect to economic, geopolitical, socio-cultural, institutional, and technological systems, it reveals the possibilities of new development paradigms for equitable and sustainable growth. This volume analyses the financing of science, technology and innovation in the BRICS economies. It highlights the importance of institutional coordination and the influence of implicit policies on the extent to which capital markets may contribute to innovation financing. It stresses the role of state development banks and similar organisations in promoting high-risk and long-run building of innovative capacities with respect to development strategy. Original and detailed data, together with expert analyses on wide-ranging issues, make this book an invaluable resource for researchers and scholars in economics, development studies and political science, in addition to policy-makers and development practitioners interested in the BRICS countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence of a new developmental state in Latin America and its significance for law and development theory. In Brazil since 2000, emerging forms of state activism, including a new industrial policy and a robust social policy, differ from both classic developmental state and neoliberal approaches. They favor a strong state and a strong market, employ public-private partnerships, seek to reduce inequality, and embrace the global economy. Case studies of state activism and law in Brazil show new roles emerging for legal institutions. They describe how the national development bank uses law in innovation promotion, trade law strengthens new developmental policies in export promotion and public health, and social law frames innovative poverty-relief programs that reduce inequality and stimulate demand. Contrasting Brazilian experience with Colombia and Mexico, the book underscores the unique features of Brazil's trajectory and the importance of this experience for understanding the role of law in development today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thrift crisis and recent weakness in the banking sector has intensified attention toward regulatory reform. But most proposals take as a given the traditional structure of banking, under which a bank holds illiquid loans and liquid liabilities. Structural Change in Banking explores the possibility of more fundamental changes in bank structure, which would reduce the instability that is inherent in the current structure. The major essays in this book, written by leading authors in the field, examine the historical legacy of limitations on bank branching and their consequences on bank structure and stability; how securitization affects the bank structure, risk, and liquidity; the advantages to a bank from having checking account information about its loan customers; and the potential for money market funds and finance companies to become the banks of the future. Structural Change in Banking is an essential tool for bank regulators, legislators, executives, and anyone concerned with rectifying the instability of traditional banking structure. This book not only makes a strong argument for change, it provides an intelligent analysis of alternatives through which credit can be provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically addresses the model of social inclusion that prevailed in Brazil under the rule of the Workers Party from the early 2000s until 2015. It examines how the emergence of a mass consumer society proved insufficient, not only to overcome underdevelopment, but also to consolidate the comprehensive social protection system inherited from Brazil’s 1988 Constitution. By juxtaposing different theoretical frameworks, this book scrutinizes how the current finance-dominated capitalism has reshaped the role of social policy, away from rights-based decommodified benefits and towards further commodification. This constitutes the Brazilian paradox: how a center-left government has promoted and boosted financialization through a market incorporation strategy using credit as a lever for expanding financial inclusion. In so doing, it has pushed the subjection of social policy further into the logic of financial markets.
