Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most original and exciting features of the Carolingian Renaissance is the reemergence of political poetry and the development of a vital tradition of verse which comments reflectively and contentiously on the course of public events. Peter Godman's analysis focuses on the character of the classical tradition in the early Middle ages--creatively adapted to "barbarian" literary tastes--and the refashioning and invention of poetic form in response to contemporary political affairs.

Book Synopsis The Jesuit Myth by : Geoffrey Cubitt
Download or read book The Jesuit Myth written by Geoffrey Cubitt and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belief in the Jesuit Conspiracy is one of the most important and enduring conspiracy theories in modern European history, and France was one of its major focuses. In this scholarly and detailed survey, Geoffrey Cubitt examines the range of polemical literature through which the prevalent conviction of Jesuitical plots was expressed, and explores political attitudes both within and outside the Catholic church. Cubitt uses the available evidence to contrast perceptions and reality, and to trace the development of a widespread and powerful myth. The Jesuit Myth offers valuable insights into the political and religious climate of nineteenth-century France.

Book Synopsis Court and Politics in Papal Rome, 1492–1700 by : Gianvittorio Signorotto
Download or read book Court and Politics in Papal Rome, 1492–1700 written by Gianvittorio Signorotto and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 book attempts to overcome the traditional historiographical approach to the role of the early modern papacy by focusing on the actual mechanisms of power in the papal court. The period covered extends from the Renaissance to the aftermath of the peace of Westphalia in 1648 - after which the papacy was reduced to a mainly spiritual role. Based on research in Italian and other European archives, the book concentrates on the factions at the Roman court and in the college of cardinals. The sacred college came under great international pressure during the election of a new pope, and consequently such figures as foreign ambassadors and foreign cardinals are examined, as well as political liaisons and social contacts at court. Finally, the book includes an analysis of the ambiguous nature of Roman ceremonial, which was both religious and secular: a reflection of the power struggle both in Rome and in Europe.

Book Synopsis The Foundations of Europe by : Thomas Hörber
Download or read book The Foundations of Europe written by Thomas Hörber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hörber analyses the building process of European integration. He shows the parliamentary discourses of France, Germany and Britain to be representative of the national position of these states towards the developing concept of 'Europe'. He covers all key events and developments of the time which had an impact on the European integration process and provides an explanation for the convergence of national discourses towards a common Europe. This development was by no means a given and the analysis of parliamentary debates shows for the first time how vigorous the debates were on European integration in the 1950s, and how, despite setbacks (notably the failure of the European Defence Community), the discussion went in favour of integration.

Book Synopsis Priests, Prelates and People by : Nicholas Atkin
Download or read book Priests, Prelates and People written by Nicholas Atkin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic Church has always been a major player in European and world history. Whether it has enjoyed a religious dominance or existed as a minority religion, Catholicism has never been diverted from political life. "Priests, Prelates and People" records the Church struggling to adapt to the new political landscape ushered in by the French Revolution, and shows how the formation of nation states and identities was both helped and hindered by the Catholic establishment. It portrays the Vatican increasingly out of step in the wake of world war, Cold War and the massive expansion of the developing world, with its problems of population growth and under-development.
