Bei der Beschreibung der spezifischen Verhaltensweisen und Erscheinungsformen der Störungsbilder werden sowohl der Schweregrad der intellektuellen Beeinträchtigung als auch der emotionale Entwicklungsstand berücksichtigt. So werden ein differenzierter, verstehender Zugang und erweiterte diagnostische Einschätzungen möglich. Dies eröffnet neue Wege, Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung therapeutisch und pädagogisch zu unterstützen und ihre seelische Gesundheit – ganz im Sinne der UN-Konvention über die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderungen – zu fördern.
