"Next year in Jerusalem" is our old phrase. It is now a question of showing that the dream can be converted into a living reality. For this, many old, outgrown, confused and limited notions must first be entirely erased from the minds of men. Dull brains might, for instance, imagine that this exodus would be from civilized regions into the desert. That is not the case. It will be carried out in the midst of civilization. We shall not revert to a lower stage, we shall rise to a higher one. We shall not dwell in mud huts; we shall build new more beautiful and more modern houses, and possess them in safety. We shall not lose our acquired possessions we shall realize them. We shall surrender our well earned rights only for better ones. We shall not sacrifice our beloved customs; we shall find them again. We shall nor leave our old home before the new one is prepared for us Those only will depart who are sure thereby to improve their position; those who are now desperate will go first after them the poor; next the prosperous, and, last of all the wealthy. Those who go in advance will raise themselves to a higher grade, equal to those whose representatives will shortly follow. Thus the exodus will be at the same time an ascent of the class. Breitenstein's Verlags-Buchhandlung. It is subtitled with "Versuch einer modernen Losung der Judenfrage," "Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question," and originally called "Address to the Rothschilds" referring to the Rothschild family banking dynasty. It is considered one of the most important texts of early Zionism. As expressed in this book, Herzl envisioned the founding of a future independent Jewish state during the 20th century. He argued that the best way to avoid antisemitism in Europe was to create this independent Jewish state. Herzl, who had lived as a secular, largely assimilated Jew, was fluent in neither Hebrew nor Yiddish. His lack of contact with Jewish culture and intellectual currents, and his limited contact with Jews less assimilated than he was probably the reason he abandoned fundamental Jewish principles and rekindled Zionism with this text. The book was used to encourage Jews from all across Europe to purchase land in Palestine. In Der Judenstaat, Herzl noted the possibility of a Jewish state in Argentina. Herzl popularized the term "Zionism," which was coined by Nathan Birnbaum. The nationalist movement culminated in the birth of the State of Israel in 1948, though Zionism continues to be connected with political support of the State of Israel.

Book excerpt: Der Judenstaat is a famous treatise by Theodor Herzl who sought to inspire the creation of the Jewish State, with the aim of securing lasting safety and prosperity for the Jewish people. Written in 1896, Herzl's original document was accompanied by the subtitle: "Versuch einer modernen Losung der Judenfrage" - in English: "Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question". Herzl's proposal contained ideas for the resettlement of the impoverished or marginalized Jews, as well as guidelines for the principles of the new state which would be their home. Der Judenstaat was published in the wake of centuries of persecution and social stigma suffered by the Jews. Many Jewish people lived in poor ghettos, and were fearful of the anti-semitists, who at the time were numerous. In many European and near Eastern cities the situation was hostile, with Jews persecuted with violence, segregation and stigmatic abuse. At the time Herzl wrote his treatise, the Rothchild banking family were involved in the resettlement of Jewish families. Herzl originally intended to deliver the contents of this book as a speech to the Rothschild banking family. However, privately Baron Edmond de Rothchild was opposed to aspects of Herzl's ideas which he felt could harm the Jewish peoples in the wider diaspora, threatening livelihoods and potentially upsetting settlements already built. In spite of this, Herzl's document achieved popularity when it was published. He famously coined the term 'Zionism', and his book was influential in the early 20th century for spurring the cause of the Jewish State. In the wake of vigorous nationalist campaigns, the State of Israel was created in 1948. This edition contains the respected translation to English from German by Sylvie d'Avigdor."
