Wir benutzen es auch selbst. Wir wissen, was mit Seele gemeint ist, und wissen es doch nicht. Denn obwohl uns der Begriff geläufig ist, wir ihn hören und auch verwenden, haben wir doch keine eindeutige Definition dafür. Jede Kultur, jede Religion, ja sogar jeder Einzelne von uns hat eine andere Vorstellung von Seele. Manche Vorstellungen ähneln sich, manche sind ganz unterschiedlich bis hin zu widersprüchlich. Immer wieder haben Philosophen, Wissenschaftler und andere Personen versucht, den Begriff zu umschreiben, zu erklären. Bei jedem von ihnen war das Ergebnis ein Anderes, bis heute ist nicht geklärt, wer nun die richtige und beste Definition gefunden hat. Es ist aber faszinierend, dass wir den Begriff trotz dieser unterschiedlichen Deutungen benutzen können. Schließlich basiert funktionierende Kommunikation ja eigentlich darauf, dass Worte, mit denen eine Person kommuniziert, für den Gegenüber die gleiche Bedeutung haben. Nur so können wir uns verständigen, wissen wir, was der Andere meint. Bei Seele scheint das nicht unbedingt notwendig zu sein. Ich kenne keinen Begriff, der uneindeutiger ist, als die Seele. Ich glaube, dass es deshalb funktioniert, weil wir uns darauf geeinigt haben, dass wir uns nicht geeinigt haben. Jede Person, die den Begriff verwendet, weiß, dass sein Gegenüber nicht genau die gleiche Vorstellung hat. Und das wird akzeptiert, weil es auch nicht so wichtig ist. Der Gegenüber muss nicht die gleiche Definition haben, er muss nur ungefähr verstehen, was die andere Person meint, was sie damit sagen will. So ist es möglich, dass der Begriff Seele für jeden Menschen und in jeder Kultur etwas Anderes bedeutet, wir aber trotzdem über sie sprechen können.

Ziele sollen dabei sein, zum einen den breiteren Erkenntniswert des religionsethnologischen Ansatzes herauszuarbeiten und zum anderen zu fragen, inwiefern die Ansätze aktuellen Forderungen nach wertneutralen und kontextgerechteren Begriffen und möglichen Bewusstmachungen von Eurozentrismen genügen. Mit breiterem Erkenntniswert meine ich, einerseits eine größere Menge an Daten über die Bedeutung von Seele bspw. für das alltägliche Leben und andererseits eine reflektiertere Position des Wissenschaftlers in Bezug auf seine Forschung. Die methodischen Überlegungen stehen also im Vordergrund, wohingegen die Ergebnisse, also die Systematik der Seele bei Hasenfratz und der Seelenbegriff bei den Insulanern von Truk bei Käser, mehr oder weniger illustrativen Charakter haben. Als Beispiel für einen religionsphänomenologischen Ansatz habe ich „Die Seele. Einführung in ein religiöses Grundphänomen“ von H.-P. Hasenfratz gewählt. Das Beispiel für einen religionsethnologischen Ansatz ist die Dissertation „Der Begriff Seele bei den Insulanern von Truk“ von Lothar Käser. Diese Beispiele werde ich zuerst jeweils einzeln behandeln, wobei ich sie zuerst kurz vorstelle und sie dann jeweils Problematiken ihres Ansatzes unterziehe. Darauf folgt ein Vergleich in Bezug auf die oben genannten Ziele und danach abschließend die Zusammenfassung. Natürlich ist mir bewusst, dass je ein Beispiel für bedeutende Ansätze der Religionswissenschaft nicht völlig repräsentativ sein kann, ich habe mich aber für diese beiden Beispiele entschieden, da sich an ihnen die oben genannten Ziele gut herausarbeiten lassen und sichtbar werden. Weiterhin ist zu sagen, dass ich quantitative Schwerpunkte auf den Ansatz von Käser gelegt habe. Zur Zitierweise: An manchen Stellen erfolgt keine Quellenangabe. In diesen Fällen stimmt die Quelle mit der des darauffolgenden Zitats überein.

To exploit this aspect of visual code, scholars from the fields of Egyptology, Sinology, Hittitology, and Assyriology, together with Mesoamericanists, art historians, and a sign language specialist, are brought together in this volume.
