Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most promising technique for the direct, ground-based detection of gravitational waves is the use of advanced interferometric gravitational wave detectors. These detectors use long-baseline Michelson interferometers, where the critical enabling component is the laser. The laser required for these interferometers must provide a low noise, single frequency, diffraction limited, high power TEM00 beam. Very importantly, the laser beam must be available continuously and without the need for operator intervention. In this thesis I describe the development and characterisation of injection-locked 10 W Nd:YAG lasers, designed specifically for use at the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) High Power Test Facility (HPTF) in Western Australia, and on the Japanese TAMA 300 gravitational wave interferometer (GWI). The starting point was a 5 W laboratory laser that had demonstrated the proof-of-principle; however this laser had insufficient power, inadequate reliability, and was not suitable for deployment to a remote site. I describe the development of this laser technology and design to realise reliable, longterm operation and field deployability, while satisfying the requirements for a GWI, with the final laser system bearing little resemblance to the proof-of-principle system. Injection-locked lasers were successfully installed at the ACIGA HPTF and at TAMA 300 in June 2004 and September 2005 respectively. The laser installed at the ACIGA HPTF has been used to investigate the effects of increased intracavity laser powers on next-generation interferometers, with the laser described in this thesis being the key enabling component of this research." -- From abstract.

Book excerpt: The detection of gravitational waves in 2015 has been hailed a scientific breakthrough and one of the most significant scientific discoveries of the 21st century. Gravitational-wave physics and astronomy are emerging as a new frontier in understanding the universe.Advanced Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Detectors brings together many of the world's top experts to deliver an authoritative and in-depth treatment on current and future detectors. Volume I is devoted to the essentials of gravitational-wave detectors, presenting the physical principles behind large-scale precision interferometry, the physics of the underlying noise sources that limit interferometer sensitivity, and an explanation of the key enabling technologies that are used in the detectors. Volume II provides an in-depth look at the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo interferometers, as well as examining future interferometric detector concepts. This two-volume set will provide students and researchers the comprehensive background needed to understand gravitational-wave detectors.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Ad vanced Study Institute on "Solid State Lasers: New Developments and Appli cations" the fifteenth course of the Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics, held under the supervision of the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society. The Institute was held at Elba International Physics Center, Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Tuscany, Italy, August 31 -September 11, 1992. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students al ready engaged in the area of quantum electronics or wishing to switch to this area from a different background. Presently the school is under the direction of Professors F.T. Arecchi and M. Inguscio, University of Florence, and Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich, and has its headquarters at the National Insti tute of Optics (INO), Florence, Italy. Each time the directors choose a subject of particular interest, alternating fundamental topics with technological ones, and ask colleagues specifically competent in a given area to take the scientific responsibility for that course.

Book excerpt: The arms of the interferometer change in length resulting in time-dependent, unequal arm-lengths and laser Doppler shifts. Thus, to cancel the laser noise, laser beatnotes are formed between lasers on separate SC and, using these one-way laser phase measurements, one can reconstruct an equal-arm interferometer in post-processing. This is commonly referred to as time-delay interferometry (TDI) and can be exploited to cancel the laser phase noise and extract the gravitational wave (GW) induced arm-length strain. The author has assisted in the development and enhancement of The University of Florida Laser Interferometry Simulator (UFLIS) to perform more accurate LISA-like simulations. UFLIS is a hardware-in-the-loop simulator of the LISA interferometry system replicating as many of the characteristics of the LISA mission as possible. This includes the development of laser pre-stabilization systems, the modeling of the delayed inter-SC laser phase transmission, and the μcycle phase measurements of MHz laser beatnotes.

Book excerpt: This is a summary of a research project that has come to be known as SUNLITE, initially standing for Stanford University - NASA laser in space technology experiment. It involves scientists from the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC), Stanford University, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA), and a growing number of other institutions. The long range objective of the SUNLITE effort is to examine the fundamental linewidth and frequency stability limits of an actively stabilized laser oscillator in the microgravity and vibration-free environment of space. The ground-based SUNLITE activities supporting that objective will develop a space-qualified, self-contained and completely automated terahertz oscillator stabilized to a linewidth of less than 3 Hz, along with a measurement system capable of determining laser linewidth to one part in 10(exp 16). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the critical technologies needed to place stabilized lasers in space and to describe the progress made by the SUNLITE project to develop these technologies.
