Book excerpt: In the rising information technology trends, cost, time, delivery, space, quality, durability, and price are all paramount in addressing managerial decision-making complexities within the supply chain, transportation, and inventory control. The intensifying competition within imprecise environments further complicates these challenges. Customer demand, influenced by multifaceted factors such as production price and income levels, often remains elusive or unpredictable in the real-world market. Fuzzy sets, while useful, need to catch up in directly capturing such uncertainties due to their numeric membership functions. Multi-Criteria Decision Making Models and Techniques: Neutrosophic Approaches explores the neutrosophic sets as a solution, uniquely poised to accommodate inherent uncertainties. Neutrosophic sets and logic are evolutionary extensions of fuzzy and intuitionistic fuzzy sets and logic. In real-world problems, these diverse uncertain systems demonstrate a capability to manage heightened levels of uncertainty. This book delves into the burgeoning field of neutrosophic theory, elucidating its application in operations research. Neutrosophic sets and logic have emerged as pivotal tools in grappling with uncertainty, impreciseness, vagueness, incompleteness, inconsistency, and indeterminacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robustness in Statistics contains the proceedings of a Workshop on Robustness in Statistics held on April 11-12, 1978, at the Army Research Office in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The papers review the state of the art in statistical robustness and cover topics ranging from robust estimation to the robustness of residual displays and robust smoothing. The application of robust regression to trajectory data reduction is also discussed. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to robust estimation, paying particular attention to iteration schemes and error structure of estimators. Sensitivity and influence curves as well as their connection with jackknife estimates are described. The reader is then introduced to a simple analog of trimmed means that can be used for studying residuals from a robust point-of-view; a class of robust estimators (called P-estimators) based on the location and scale-invariant Pitman estimators of location; and robust estimation in the presence of outliers. Subsequent chapters deal with robust regression and its use to reduce trajectory data; tests for censoring of extreme values, especially when population distributions are incompletely defined; and robust estimation for time series autoregressions. This monograph should be of interest to mathematicians and statisticians.

The series has provided a forum for the interaction of professionals in statistics, computing science, and in numerical methods, wherein they may discuss a wide range of topics at the interface of these disciplines. This, the 22nd Symposium on the Interface: Computing Science and Statistics, was held 16-19 May, 1990 at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University and is the third Symposium to be held under the recently organized Interface Foundation of North America. The Interface Board of Directors consists of the nine most recent Symposium Chairs: James E. Gentle, Lynne Billard, David M. Allen, Thomas J. Boardman, Richard M. Heiberger, Edward J. Wegman, Linda Malone, Raoul LePage, and Jon Kettenring. The officers of the Interface are William Eddy, Board Chairman and Executive Director; Edward Wegman, President and Treasurer; Lynne Billard, Secretary. My valued colleague Connie Page, Editor of this Proceedings Volume and generally bright and hardworking person, has organizational skills of a higher order which were successfully brought into play during many critical junctures not strictly connected with the Proceedings. Edward Wegman, Barbara Barringer, Bill Eddy, and George Styan all pitched in with useful information on numerous occasions. Our Keynote Speaker, Peter G. Hall and Plenary Speakers David L. Donoho, Jerome H. Friedman (who also gave a short course), Bruce Hajek, John Skilling, and C. F.

Book excerpt: Modern astronomers encounter a vast range of challenging statistical problems, yet few are familiar with the wealth of techniques developed by statisticians. Conversely, few statisticians deal with the compelling problems confronted in astronomy. Astrostatistics bridges this gap. Authored by a statistician-astronomer team, it provides professionals and advanced students in both fields with exposure to issues of mutual interest. In the first half of the book the authors introduce statisticians to stellar, galactic, and cosmological astronomy and discuss the complex character of astronomical data. For astronomers, they introduce the statistical principles of nonparametrics, multivariate analysis, time series analysis, density estimation, and resampling methods. The second half of the book is organized by statistical topic. Each chapter contains examples of problems encountered astronomical research and highlights methodological issues. The final chapter explores some controversial issues in astronomy that have a strong statistical component. The authors provide an extensive bibliography and references to software for implementing statistical methods. The "marriage" of astronomy and statistics is a natural one and benefits both disciplines. Astronomers need the tools and methods of statistics to interpret the vast amount of data they generate, and the issues related to astronomical data pose intriguing challenges for statisticians. Astrostatistics paves the way to improved statistical analysis of astronomical data and provides a common ground for future collaboration between the two fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international market is very competitive for high-tech manufacturers to day. Achieving competitive quality and reliability for products requires leader ship from the top, good management practices, effective and efficient operation and maintenance systems, and use of appropriate up-to-date engineering de sign tools and methods. Furthermore, manufacturing yield and reliability are interrelated. Manufacturing yield depends on the number of defects found dur ing both the manufacturing process and the warranty period, which in turn determines the reliability. the production of microelectronics has evolved into Since the early 1970's, one of the world's largest manufacturing industries. As a result, an important agenda is the study of reliability issues in fabricating microelectronic products and consequently the systems that employ these products, particularly, the new generation of microelectronics. Such an agenda should include: • the economic impact of employing the microelectronics fabricated by in dustry, • a study of the relationship between reliability and yield, • the progression toward miniaturization and higher reliability, and • the correctness and complexity of new system designs, which include a very significant portion of software.
