Book excerpt: Compressively shock-loaded copper single crystals were examined employing complementary methods of X-ray diffraction, X-ray topography (XRT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The defect structures induced depended on the crystal orientation relative to the direction of shock propagation and also upon the existence or absence of a reflected tensile wave. TEM disclosed that the defect structure induced by compressive shock loading consisted of clusters of microtwins alternating with a tangled dislocation substructure. Failure zones did not occur. The induced defect structure exhibited a low net macroscopic misorientation which amounted to less than two degrees of arc and the misorientation of the twinned regions with respect to the adjacent dislocation substructure was less than 1/2 degree of arc. By contrast specimens subjected to a reflected tensile pulse exhibited a failure zone and the defect structure in its vicinity showed a substantial macroscopic misorientation. In addition, a high incidence of porosity was observed by SEM. The pores had octahedral shape with facets corresponding to close-packed planes. Structural details observed within the pores were identified as twinned regions. (Author).

Book excerpt: The inelastic response and residual mechanical properties acquired from most shock compressed solids are quite different from those acquired from quasi-static or moderate strain rates. For instance, the residual hardness of many shock compressed metals has been found to be considerably lower than those loaded under quasi-static conditions to the same maximum stress. However, the residual hardness of shock compressed metals is much higher than those loaded quasi-statically to the same total strain. These observations suggest that the deformation mechanisms active during inelastic deformation under shock compression and quasi-static or moderate rates may be quite different. Therefore, the primary objective of this short book is to offer the reader a concise introduction on the Structure-Property Relationships concerning shock compressed metals and metallic alloys via shock recovery experiments. The first phase of the book, chapters 1 through 3 provides a brief historical perspective on the structure-property relationships as it pertains to shock compression science, then plastic deformation in shock compressed metals and metallic alloys is described in terms of deformation slip, deformation twinning, and their consequences to spall failure. Existing knowledge gaps and limitations on shock recovery experiments are also discussed. The fundamentals of shock wave propagation in condensed media are presented through the formation and stability of shock waves, then how they are treated using the Rankine-Hugoniot jump relations derived from the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. The equation of states which govern the thermodynamic transition of a material from the unshock state to the shock state is briefly described and the elastic-plastic behavior of shock compressed solids is presented at the back end of the first phase of this book. The second phase of the book describes the geometry and design of shock recovery experiments using explosives, gas and powder guns. Then results derived from the residual mechanical properties, microstructure changes, and spall failure mechanisms in shock compressed metals and metallic alloys with FCC, BCC, and HCP crystal lattice structures are presented. Also, results on the residual microstructure of explosively compacted powders and powder mixtures are presented. Lastly, the book closes with the new frontiers in shock recovery experiments based on novel materials, novel microscopes, novel mechanical processing techniques, and novel time-resolved in-situ XRD shock experiments.

Book excerpt: Deviations from single glide during the deformation of Cu single crystals have been detected by following the orientation of the tensile axis using x-ray techniques. The deviations for room temperature deformation of some crystals can be explained if it is assumed that 5-10% of the elongation is produced by slip on the secondary systems and the remainder on the primary system. The deviations from single glide are much smaller in alpha-brass crystals which also show more overshoot, so that secondary slip is inhibited. It is suggested that secondary slip is produced near the heads of piled-up groups of primary dislocations at the ends of newly formed slip lines where the resolved shear stress on the secondary systems is high. Secondary slip is thus very localized, producing little strain, but it can give rise to a high forest density.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in stored energy, resistivity, density, x-ray line broadening and dislocation arrangements (from transmission electron microscopy) have been measured on Cu specimens shock-loaded at 75-435 kb. The stored energy in shock-loaded copper, and changes in density and resistivity are larger than those after conventional deformation. A high density of twins makes an appreciable contribution to all the measured quantities. Dislocation densities rise to values of 10 to the 11th power lines per sq cm at the highest pressure. The resistivity, density and x-ray measurements yield dislocation densities in substantial agreement at all pressures, after correcting for the effects due to the twins. At the higher pressures electron microscopy yields results that are lower by a factor of about 5-10. Dislocation densities from stored energy measurements are high; this finding can be rationalized by the consideration that the deformation twin boundaries present are largely incoherent. There is no evidence for homogeneous dislocation nucleation during shock-loading. (Author).
