Book Synopsis Defoe’s Writings and Manliness by : Stephen H. Gregg
Download or read book Defoe’s Writings and Manliness written by Stephen H. Gregg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defoe's Writings and Manliness is a timely intervention in Defoe studies and in the study of masculinity in eighteenth-century literature more generally. Arguing that Defoe's writings insistently returned to the issues of manliness and its contrary, effeminacy, this book reveals how he drew upon a complex and diverse range of discourses through which masculinity was discussed in the period. It is for this reason that this book crosses over and moves between modern paradigms for the analysis of eighteenth-century masculinity to assess Defoe's men. A combination of Defoe's clarity of vision, a spirit of contrariness and a streak of moral didacticism resulted in an idiosyncratic and restless testing of the forces surrounding his period's ideas of manliness. Defoe's men are men, but they are never unproblematically so: they display a contrariness which indicates that a failure of manliness is never very far away.

Download or read book Selected Writings of Daniel Defoe written by James T. Boulton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-05-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradoxically, Daniel Defoe is diminished by his popularity as the author of a handful of important novels, since the remainder of his voluminous writings suffer undue neglect. Fully to understand him he should be taken whole but his authorship of over 500 publications renders this feat well nigh impossible. The purpose of this selection, then, is to enable the reader to make or renew the acquaintance of Defoe on some of his favourite topics such as trade and politics, manners and morality, in poetry as well as prose, and in works like A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs Veal and Memoirs of a Cavalier, which are characteristic blends of fact and fiction. Equipped with the insights possible from this sample, the reader - it is hoped - will return to the major novels with a keener appreciation of their distinctive quality and a livelier sense of their author.
Book Synopsis The Life of Daniel Defoe by : William Minto
Download or read book The Life of Daniel Defoe written by William Minto and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Defoe was an author to some two hundred and fifty separate books and pamphlets, very few of them under his own name. Probably two men could not be found who would read through the vast mass of contemporary anonymous and pseudonymous print, and agree upon a complete list of Defoe's writings. Fortunately, however, for those who wish to get a clear idea of his life and character, the identification is not pure guess-work on internal evidence. He put his own name or initials to some of his productions, and treated the authorship of others as open secrets. Enough is ascertained as his to provide us with the means for a complete understanding of his opinions and his conduct. For the following sketch, I have endeavoured to connect Defoe and his work with the history of the time.

Book excerpt: "Memoirs of a Cavalier" is a historical novel written by Daniel Defoe. The book is presented as the memoirs of an anonymous Englishman who fought as a cavalryman during the tumultuous years of the English Civil War and the subsequent conflicts. The narrative provides a vivid and detailed account of the protagonist's experiences, capturing the political, social, and military landscape of 17th-century England. "Memoirs of a Cavalier" offers readers a glimpse into the complexities of the English Civil War, exploring themes of loyalty, honor, and survival amidst the chaos of war. The book delves into the protagonist's struggles, challenges, and moments of triumph, shedding light on the realities of warfare and its impact on individuals. Defoe's historical accuracy and attention to detail, combined with his compelling storytelling, make "Memoirs of a Cavalier" a significant work in the genre of historical fiction. Overall, "Memoirs of a Cavalier" stands as a testament to Defoe's skill as a writer and his ability to transport readers to a bygone era, immersing them in the world of a soldier's life during a turbulent period of English history.
Download or read book Daniel Defoe written by William Minto and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three considerable biographies of Defoe-the first, by George Chalmers, published in 1786; the second by Walter Wilson, published in 1830; the third, by William Lee, published in 1869. All three are thorough and painstaking works, justified by independent research and discovery. The labour of research in the case of an author supposed to have written some two hundred and fifty separate books and pamphlets, very few of them under his own name, is naturally enormous; and when it is done, the results are open to endless dispute. It is Defoe's misfortune that his biographers on the large scale have occupied themselves too much with subordinate details, and have been misled from a true appreciation of his main lines of thought and action by religious, political, and hero-worshipping bias. For the following sketch, taking Mr. Lee's elaborate work as my chronological guide, I have read such of Defoe's undoubted writings as are accessible in the Library of the British Museum-there is no complete collection, I believe, in existence-and endeavoured to connect them and him with the history of the time.
