This book was released on 2011 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature dropout has long posed a significant challenge in mental health treatment in various clinical settings with different client populations (Beckham, 1992; Pekarik, 1992). Ethnic-specific treatment programs have been promoted as possible solutions to reduce the inequities in mental health service use and treatment dropout between White and ethnic minority populations. A growing body of research has found that the presence of ethnic-specific programs in minority communities have helped to increase overall rates of mental health service utilization (Takeuchi, Sue, & Yeh, 1995). However, there are few studies that have examined premature dropout rates at such mental health centers employing ethnic-specific treatment strategies. Zane, Hatanaka, Park, and Akutsu (1994) showed the possibility of some disparities in treatment at ethnic-specific settings among members of various Southeast Asian subgroups compared to clients of different ethnic subgroups. The current study focused on possible within-group differences in premature dropout among various Asian American subgroups. Significant differences were found in premature dropout when examining sociodemographic and clinical variables. In addition, client-therapist match was found to be significantly related to dropout status. Finally, clients from Southeast Asian groups prematurely dropped out of therapy significantly more than those from other Asian subgroups.

Book Synopsis Premature Termination in Psychotherapy by : Joshua K. Swift
Download or read book Premature Termination in Psychotherapy written by Joshua K. Swift and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature termination is a significant yet often neglected problem in psychotherapy with significant consequences for clients and therapists alike. According to some estimates, as many as 20% of adult clients terminate psychotherapy prematurely. Even experienced practitioners using the best evidence-based techniques cannot successfully promote positive, long-term change in clients who do not complete the full course of treatment. This book helps therapists and clinical researchers identify the common factors that lead to premature termination, and it presents eight strategies to address these factors and reduce client dropout rates. Such evidence-based techniques will help therapists establish proper roles and behaviors, work with client preferences, educate clients on patterns of change, and plan for appropriate termination within the first few sessions. Additional strategies can be used throughout therapy to help strengthen and reinforce clients' feelings of hope, enhance their motivation to create change, develop and maintain the therapeutic alliance, and continually evaluate overall treatment progress. Case examples demonstrate how these strategies can be employed in real-life scenarios.

Book excerpt: Lay theories - the informal, common-sense explanations people give for particular social behaviours - are often very different from formal 'scientific' explanations of what actually happens. While they have been studied in the past, this is the first attempt to review, in detail, the nature of these beliefs. More specifically, it is the first study to consider such fundamental questions as the structure, aetiology, stability and consequence of lay theories about a range of topics. Each chapter covers a different area, such as psychology, psychiatry, medicine, economics, statistics, law and education.
