Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoupling explosive energy by detonating charges in cavities larger than the charge is an effective method for reducing ground shock magnitudes over those of fully contained bursts. The report presents an analysis of ground motions generated by decoupled explosions in rock cavities. A simplified elastic solution is used to calculate particle motion magnitudes and time histories produced by an explosion in rock as a function of the initial cavity radius and the loading density of the explosive. Loading density is defined as the total explosive weight divided by the initial cavity volume. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Outrunning ground shock data from the 100- to 10-psi overpressure decade in six large surface high explosive (HE) tests, three from a rock site and three from a glaciated soil site, were analyzed for the effect of gross changes in constitutive properties. Axisymmetric wave propagation code calculations in layered linear and nonlinear (incrementally elastic-plastic) media were performed to determine the effects of introducing nonlinearity, selected material property variations, and the relative importance of airblast and direct induced effects from surface explosions in the overpressure decade of interest.

Book excerpt: There is a considerable body of data, including all the direct P-Wave data from Project Cowboy, which indicates a decoupling factor of the order of two for a salt cavity compared to tamped alluvium or valley tuff. Cavities in soft rock probably do not decouple at all but increase the seismic signal. An increase in decoupling due to high frequency absorption appears unlikely, but should such an effect exist, decoupling factors would probably still be less than ten. Cavity decoupling may actually increase detectability because of the lower background noise at the higher frequencies produced by the cavity. (Author).
