Book Synopsis Decorum of the Minuet, Delirium of the Waltz by : Eric McKee
Download or read book Decorum of the Minuet, Delirium of the Waltz written by Eric McKee and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much music was written for the two most important dances of the 18th and 19th centuries, the minuet and the waltz. In Decorum of the Minuet, Delirium of the Waltz, Eric McKee argues that to better understand the musical structures and expressive meanings of this dance music, one must be aware of the social contexts and bodily rhythms of the social dances upon which it is based. McKee approaches dance music as a component of a multimedia art form that involves the interaction of physical motion, music, architecture, and dress. Moreover, the activity of attending a ball involves a dynamic network of modalities—sight, sound, bodily awareness, touch, and smell, which can be experienced from the perspectives of a dancer, a spectator, or a musician. McKee considers dance music within a larger system of signifiers and points-of-view that opens new avenues of interpretation.

Book Synopsis Speculative Taxidermy by : Giovanni Aloi
Download or read book Speculative Taxidermy written by Giovanni Aloi and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxidermy, once the province of natural history and dedicated to the pursuit of lifelike realism, has recently resurfaced in the world of contemporary art, culture, and interior design. In Speculative Taxidermy, Giovanni Aloi offers a comprehensive mapping of the discourses and practices that have enabled the emergence of taxidermy in contemporary art. Drawing on the speculative turn in philosophy and recovering past alternative histories of art and materiality from a biopolitical perspective, Aloi theorizes speculative taxidermy: a powerful interface that unlocks new ethical and political opportunities in human-animal relationships and speaks to how animal representation conveys the urgency of addressing climate change, capitalist exploitation, and mass extinction. A resolutely nonanthropocentric take on the materiality of one of the most controversial mediums in art, this approach relentlessly questions past and present ideas of human separation from the animal kingdom. It situates taxidermy as a powerful interface between humans and animals, rooted in a shared ontological and physical vulnerability. Carefully considering a select number of key examples including the work of Nandipha Mntambo, Maria Papadimitriou, Mark Dion, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Roni Horn, Oleg Kulik, Steve Bishop, Snæbjörnsdóttir/Wilson, and Cole Swanson, Speculative Taxidermy contextualizes the resilient presence of animal skin in the gallery space as a productive opportunity to rethink ethical and political stances in human-animal relationships.

This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 1259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive compilation of some 595 documents on the Arab-Israeli conflict and a variety of related issues includes all the materials the researcher, analyst, and student of this conflict and region needs in a single text, from the years 1897 to 2003. The subject-matter content is as varied as the legal and political issues presented by this conflict. It includes geographical boundaries, refugees, water rights, regional security, elimination of weapons of mass destruction, and, of course, human rights and peace. Book Synopsis Dynamics of Self-Determination in Palestine by : Waart
Download or read book Dynamics of Self-Determination in Palestine written by Waart and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab-Israeli conflict has become an example of total disregard for international law by all parties involved, including the United Nations, to the detriment of a regional and global lasting peace. The conflict has contributed considerably to the erosion of the moral and legal authority of the United Nations, while the international community has failed to take prompt advantage of the East-West detente. Peoples with statehood — the Iraqis, Somalis, Yugoslavs — and even more those without — the Palestinians — paid a high price for the international lack of decisiveness. Dynamics of Self-Determination in Palestine discusses the Palestinian conflict in the light of the protection of peoples under international law. Chapter One treats the fact that the Arab states and the Palestinians have overlooked the element of negotiation in the keeping of international order, Chapter Two discusses the International Bill of Rights, in which the UN included self-determination in order to protect peoples against oppression, while Chapter Three expounds on the fact that, in doing so, it shaped the framework for the settlement of conflicting territorial claims to Palestine. The final chapter sets forth the desired UN participation in the creation of Palestine.
