Book Synopsis The Aghlabids and their Neighbors by : Glaire D. Anderson
Download or read book The Aghlabids and their Neighbors written by Glaire D. Anderson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first dynasty to mint gold dinars outside of the Abbasid heartlands, the Aghlabid (r. 800-909) reign in North Africa has largely been neglected in the scholarship of recent decades, despite the canonical status of its monuments and artworks in early Islamic art history. The Aghlabids and their Neighbors focuses new attention on this key dynasty. The essays in this volume, produced by an international group of specialists in history, art and architectural history, archaeology, and numismatics, illuminate the Aghlabid dynasty’s interactions with neighbors in the western Mediterranean and its rivals and allies elsewhere, providing a state of the question on early medieval North Africa and revealing the centrality of the dynasty and the region to global economic and political networks. Book excerpt: An extremely rare and conspicuous find of oriental riding costumes in the late antique necropolis of Antinoopolis (Middle Egypt) brought together a number of specialists piecing together their evolution and historical context. The first part deals with the evolution and distribution of the oriental riding costume in the Middle and Near East through the ages and the historical background on the find spot. The second part focuses on the original costumes in various museum collections including much so far unpublished material, technical researches and reconstructions. Surprising new insights on the social background of their owners has been obtained by carefully studying and piecing together the finding context. Also the representations of riding costumes in and on different monuments are carefully examined. The book is richly illustrated with colour and black and white plates.

Book Synopsis Painting the Skin by : Élodie Dupey García
Download or read book Painting the Skin written by Élodie Dupey García and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesoamerican communities past and present are characterized by their strong inclination toward color and their expert use of the natural environment to create dyes and paints. In pre-Hispanic times, skin was among the preferred surfaces on which to apply coloring materials. Archaeological research and historical and iconographic evidence show that, in Mesoamerica, the human body—alive or dead—received various treatments and procedures for coloring it. Painting the Skin brings together exciting research on painted skins in Mesoamerica. Chapters explore the materiality, uses, and cultural meanings of the colors applied to a multitude of skins, including bodies, codices made of hide and vegetal paper, and even building “skins.” Contributors offer physicochemical analysis and compare compositions, manufactures, and attached meanings of pigments and colorants across various social and symbolic contexts and registers. They also compare these Mesoamerican colors with those used in other ancient cultures from both the Old and New Worlds. This cross-cultural perspective reveals crucial similarities and differences in the way cultures have painted on skins of all types. Examining color in Mesoamerica broadens understandings of Native religious systems and world views. Tracing the path of color use and meaning from pre-Columbian times to the present allows for the study of the preparation, meanings, social uses, and thousand-year origins of the coloring materials used by today’s Indigenous peoples. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Levant: Crossroads of Late Antiquity. History, Religion, and Archaeology / Le Levant: Carrefour de l'Antiquité tardive explores the monumental, religious, and social developments that took place in the Roman province of Syria during the 3rd through 6th centuries CE. Ellen Bradshaw Aitken and John M. Fossey bring together the work of twenty scholars of archaeology, art history, religious studies, and ancient history to examine this dynamic period of change in social, cultural, and religious life. Close attention to texts and material culture, including palaeo-Christian mosaics and churches, highlights the encounters of peoples and religions, as well as the rich exchange of ideas, practices, and traditions in the Levant. The essays bring fresh perspectives on “East” and “West” in antiquity and the diversity of ancient religious movements.
