Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoding Mammon is an exposition of the negative assessment of money implied in Jesus' statement, "You cannot serve God and Mammon." On the basis of the theology enshrined in the Old and New Testaments and in the long-term tradition of the church, it is claimed that problems associated with money do not arise simply from the way it is used, but from the nature of money itself. Despite the fact that money has enabled great economic development, and in contrast with the general consensus of governments, economists, and many theologians that money is either a positive or neutral instrument, the book seeks to show that money is a deeply flawed instrument, created by fallen human beings, and fashioned over the years to suit the interests of those in power rather than the needs of people in general. It is argued that money should only be allowed to operate within severe restrictions, and that any reformulation of the global economy as a result of the recent financial crisis needs to be based on this understanding.

Book excerpt: This book challenges amoral views of finance as the leading realm in which mammon – wealth and profit – is pursued with little overt regard for morality. The author details an enhanced ethical emphasis by leading Anglo–American professionals in the aftermath of the 2007–8 global financial crisis. Instead of merely stressing expert knowledge, professionals sought to overcome the alleged impossibility of serving “two masters” – mammon and God – by embracing religious finance, socio-economic inequality, sustainability and other overtly moral issues. Continuities in liberal values and ideas, however, limited the impact of this enhanced ethical emphasis to restoring the professional authority, as well as to more fundamentally reforming of Anglo–American finance following the most severe period of instability since the Great Depression. Providing a nuanced account of post-crisis change and continuity in a crucially important industry, Campbell-Verduyn advances a dynamic, process-based understanding of authority that will appeal to international political economists and sociologists alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Economic Theology, Goodchild offers a philosophical analysis of the contemporary economy in terms of the way it structures credit and faith. The Great Financial Crisis of 2007 and onwards has exposed the extent to which the economy functions as a network of credits and debts. Credit and debt may now be understood as the driving force of economic behaviour. In this analysis, economic theories of markets and money are also ways of ordering trust. Similarly, the institutions of money, finance and banking provide the framework enabling trust and cooperation. Goodchild explores how reliance on such theories and institutions produces disequilibrium dynamics, growing inequalities, increasing enclosure, resource depletion and breakdown. Nevertheless, the failures of the system only intensify efforts to extend the system itself. Building on and extending Goodchild’s Theology of Money, the author exposes the extent to which humanity has become enslaved within theories and institutions of its own making. As the second volume in his Credit and Faith trilogy, Goodchild explains how the economy itself is a way of shaping time and attention, care and evaluation, trust and cooperation, so directly assuming a theological role. This volume extends the theological critique of the dynamics of financial capitalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his ministry, Jesus spoke frequently and unabashedly on the now-taboo subject of money. With nothing good to say to the rich, the New Testament--indeed the entire Bible--is far from positive towards the topic of personal wealth. And yet, we all seek material prosperity and comfort. How are Christians to square the words of their savior with the balances of their bank accounts, or more accurately, with their unquenchable desire for financial security? While the church has developed diverse responses to the problems of poverty, it is often silent on what seems almost as straightforward a biblical principle: that wealth, too, is a problem. By considering the particular context of the recent economic history of Ireland, this book explores how the parables of Jesus can be the key to unlocking what it might mean to follow Christ as wealthy people without diluting our dilemma or denying the tension. Through an engagement with contemporary economic and political thought, aided by the work of Karl Barth and William T. Cavanaugh, this book represents a unique and innovative intervention to a discussion that applies to every Christian in the Western world.

Book excerpt: In Inequality in Canada Eric Sager considers one of the defining – but hardest to define – ideas of our era and traces its different meanings and contexts across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Sager shows how the idea of inequality arose in the long evolution in Britain and the United States from classical economics to the emerging welfare economics of the twentieth century. Within this transatlantic frame, inequality took a distinct form in Canada: different iterations of the idea appear in Protestant critiques of wealth, labour movements, farmer-progressive politics, the social gospel, social Catholicism in Quebec, English-Canadian political economy, and political and intellectual justifications of the social security state. A tradition of idealist thought persisted in the twentieth century, sustaining the idea of inequality despite deep silences among Canadian economists. Sager argues that inequality goes beyond the distribution of income and wealth: it is the idea that there are wide gaps between rich and poor, that the gaps are both an economic problem and a social injustice, and that when inequality appears, it is as a problem that can be either eliminated or reduced. It is precisely because inequality appears in different contexts, and because it changes, Sager reasons, that we can begin to perceive the contours and cleavages of inequality in our time. In our century, a political solution to inequality may rest on the recovery of an ethical ideal and egalitarian politics that have long preoccupied the history of Canadian thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proverbs 22:22 enjoins the reader, “Don’t take advantage of the poor just because you can.” Mammon’s Ecology is a systematic investigation into the mysterious nature of modern money, which confronts us with the perplexing fact that, in the global economy as it is, we take advantage of the poor whether we want to or not. We destroy natural systems whether we want to or not. Ched Myers describes Mammon’s Ecology as a “workbook” about “the secret life of money.” Where Prather and others have shown that money is one of the perverse Powers described in Ephesians 6, Mammon’s Ecology details precisely how money exercises this peculiar power and outlines suggestions for Christians who feel trapped in this complicity—not just as individuals, but as church. Mammon’s Ecology is not a book about economics (which the author calls “the world’s best antidote to insomnia”), but rather a book about the “deep ecology” of (post)modern power and injustice. Read individually or as a group, Mammon’s Ecology will leave you unable to think about money the same way again.

Book excerpt: Everyone yearns for “the good life” ... where children are reared in a loving, stimulating environment ... where youth are prepared for their future ... where adults achieve satisfaction through personal relationships and meaningfully rewarding work ... and where seniors find peace in their “golden” years. Typically, it entails economic sufficiency. Yet, when this universal hope becomes reality, many Christians confront a disturbing faith challenge. Jesus taught his followers to postpone earthly satisfactions until the next life. In the present world, their blessings will be found in poverty, hunger, sorrow, and persecution. Woe to those with wealth, full stomachs, laughter, and popularity! Christ practiced and demands self-denial, not self-satisfaction. Entry into Jesus’ severe life-style is difficult and the path is arduous. Multitudes are called but only a select few actually follow the way to eternal life that requires crucifixion of one’s self. This book is a thought-provoking biblical analysis of the gospel’s opposition to wealth. One cannot serve both God and money. The Christian dilemma is that practical faith absolutely requires compromise. Money is necessary for daily life and future needs. How is it possible to follow Christ in this money-driven society? The Book of Mammon searches the Bible for the surprising resolution.

Book excerpt: Book 2 of The Code of Opposites (TCO for short) furthers the mission to heal our power issues, and thus shift from the ego’s need to dominate into the adoption of wholesome power. While Book 1 focuses on “no push-pull,” Book 2 looks at “no self-doubt.” Imagine experiencing 100% faith and having total certainty that you can [fill in the blank]… Would that be a valuable change? Yes, but how? Language is where your Power is. To transform, you must look at the story you tell. Activating a metalanguage – a language beyond all languages – allows you to track patterns, understand the purpose of your self-limiting creations, and be able to turn them off. Cracking this code reveals depths of meaning that animate the soul of all wisdom teachings. The codes are so awesome they naturally raise your vibrational field to the sense of enough by which to resonate with oneness. Radical? Crazy? You betcha! Especially as this ancient language that came back from the future renamed itself “S/Hebrew,” to sanctify the union of the feminine and the masculine. Imagine yourself… * Processing trauma by realizing that mysticism may just be the only proven track to healing. * Having a unifying equation to explore the shadow, and stretch beyond fear into the sacred. * Doing what it takes to raise your self-esteem, and trust yourself in your chosen calling. * Moving out of “ScareCity” by being real enough to know what you want, and ask for it in such a way that you might receive it.

Book excerpt: For many years, the body of Christ around the world has been subject to criticism owing to many Christians’ attitudes toward finances and the doctrine of financial prosperity. But where have things gone wrong? Many whom God has entrusted with money have used it to advance their selfish interests at the expense of the advancement of the kingdom of God and society at large. While being financially prosperous is not sinful in itself, the motive behind the desire for money and its subsequent use often conflicts with biblical standards. The Bible makes a clear distinction between Mammon and God. Both are spirits, and both influence the motive, source, and use of finances. A new breed of kingdom-minded Christians who can be entrusted with heaven’s resources must emerge. This book will surely uncover the true source and purpose of finances for Christians who desire to extend the kingdom of God on earth. In this book, you will learn: The difference between kingdom-driven prosperity and Mammon-driven prosperity. The perils and dangers of Mammon in the body of Christ. The kingdom-centered financial practices of a twenty-first century church. The blessings of giving and the correct ways to give to God and society. The biblical source of sustainable wealth for a thriving life and ministry.

Book excerpt: Fourteen-year-old Justin Blake could care less about spending his summer vacation visiting Plimoth Plantation with his parents. It was to be yet another educational encounter well planned by his history teacher mom and literature professor dad, and would only add to his reputation of being the class geek. It was time to distance himself. What he wouldn't give to be vacationing at the new Florida theme park, Medieval World, with his best friend. He just wanted to be accepted and to fit in as one of the guys, He told himself, "I've read too many books, seen too many plays, and visited too many historical landmarks . . . it just makes me seem like a freak to everyone my own age." Justin had no way of knowing that he was soon to embark upon a life changing odyssey that would challenge his reality and turn his world upside down. As two worlds collide, he finds himself trapped in limbo between 1622 and 1999. His heart is divided: Can he choose between his family and his first love? Can he sacrifice one world for the other? Is the choice even his to make?
