Book Synopsis Defense Acquisitions by : Paul L. Francis
Download or read book Defense Acquisitions written by Paul L. Francis and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Oct. 2008, the U.S. Navy will begin construction of the first of two lead DDG 1000 Zumwalt-Class destroyers -- at an expected cost of $6.3 billion. Given the history of cost growth on shipbuilding programs, as well as the Navy¿s request for approval of a third ship, the author was asked to assess the progress of the program. He examined: (1) whether key systems can be delivered on time and work as intended; (2) design maturity; (3) shipyard readiness; and (4) whether lead and follow-on DDG 1000 ships can be built within budget. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.
Book Synopsis Landing Craft, Infantry and Fire Support by : Gordon L. Rottman
Download or read book Landing Craft, Infantry and Fire Support written by Gordon L. Rottman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by one soldier as “a metal box designed by a sadist to move soldiers across the water,” the Landing Craft, Infantry was a large beaching craft intended to deliver an infantry company to a hostile shore, once the beachhead was secured. The LCI and its vehicle-delivery counterpart, the Landing Ship, Medium were widely used by the allies during World War II. Later, the hulls of these ships were used as the basis for a fire support ship. While the landing ships were phased out after the Korean War, some fire support craft remained in use throughout the Vietnam War. This book tells the developmental and operational history of this important tool of American amphibious military strategy that spanned three wars.
Book Synopsis Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures by : You-Sheng Wu
Download or read book Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures written by You-Sheng Wu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-08-22 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings contains the papers presented at The 8th International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Other Floating Structures held in China in September 2001 - the first PRADS of the 21st Century. The overall aim of PRADS symposia is to advance the design of ships and other floating structures as a professional discipline and science by exchanging knowledge and promoting discussion of relevant topics in the fields of naval architecture and marine and offshore engineering. In line with the aim, in welcoming the new era, this Symposium is intended to increase international co-operation and give a momentum for the new development of design and production technology of ships and other floating structures for efficiency, economy, safety, and environmental production. The main themes of this Symposium are Design Synthesis, Production, Hydrodynamics, Structures and Materials of Ships and Floating Systems. Proposals for over 270 papers from 26 countries and regions within the themes were received for PRADS 2001, and about 170 papers were accepted for presentation at the symposium. With the high quality of the proposed papers the Local Organising Committee had a difficult task to make a balanced selection and to control the total number of papers for fitting into the allocated time schedule approved by the Standing Committee of PRADS. Volume I covers design synthesis, production and part of hydrodynamics. Volume II contains the rest of hydrodynamics, and structures and materials.

Download or read book French Destroyers written by John Jordan and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A superb book that will keep any reader happy for months as they discover stories and episodes in French naval destroyer design and history.”—Warship World Between the wars the French produced some of the largest, and certainly the fastest, destroyers in the world. Known as Contre-Torpilleurs, these striking and innovatory super-destroyers form the core of this book, but the more conventional Torpilleurs d’Escadre are also covered. This history combines the technical and service material published in French-language monographs over the past two decades with the authors’ own research from primary sources. The structure of the book follows that of the highly successful French Cruisers, with Part I devoted to the design of each of the classes built after 1922. The text is accompanied by detailed data tables and illustrated by a comprehensive set of specially drawn plans and schemas based on official documents, as well as carefully selected photographs from French naval sources and from private collections. Coverage runs down to the Le Hardi class, the last pre-war design. Part II deals with the historical side, covering the eventful careers of these ships before, during and after the war. This section is illustrated by maps specially drawn for the book, and by contemporary photographs. Like its highly successful predecessors, French Battleships and French Cruisers, this beautifully presented book “fills a significant gap in the English library about French warships. Apart from that the book will absolutely be a treasure on the bookshelves of collectors, historians, ships modelers and all other devotees of maritime history” (Go2War2.nl).
