With the money he'll make, he can hold off his creditors a bit longer. Upon their first meeting, Sheila believes John to be nothing more than a vagrant. John tries to convince the senator otherwise, but she remains undeterred and the stage is set for the numerous hilarious skirmishes that lie ahead. Despite their differences, John finds himself attracted to Sheila. He cleans up his act and attempts to appease her. Icy exteriors gradually melt between the pair, and they begin dating. On one such adventure, they stumble across a pack of coyotes feeding on a fallen deer. John's horse spooks and throws him. Sheila comes to his rescue, saving his life. After they return home, Sheila realizes she has fallen in love, but she knows a relationship will not work because of their drastically different worlds. But John is determined to win Sheila's love. Will he be able to convince the senator to marry him, or will their differences keep them apart?

Book excerpt: A pregnant detective investigates murders tied to a strange group of women in this thriller by the New York Times–bestselling authors of Wicked Lies. You Sense Him Some refer to it as the Colony. To others, it’s a cult. But few locals in the Oregon coastal hamlet of Deception Bay have ever been invited to the inner sanctum of Siren Song. Even the sisters who live here, far from strangers who might recoil at their unnerving psychic abilities, don’t know all the terrors buried within its walls… You Fear Him Eight months into a surrogate pregnancy for her sister, Kristina, Detective Savannah Dunbar just wants to wrap up paperwork before taking medical leave. But her department’s investigation into a brutal double homicide has suddenly become much more complex—and personal. And now there are disturbing rumors about the Colony, its matriarch, and a long history of bitter secrets... But You Can Never Stop Him Death has come to Siren Song before. But this time there will be no refuge and no remorse. For everything born in wickedness must die that way—and a killer will not rest until he has claimed them all… “[A] superb supernatural thriller…. A masterpiece of romantic suspense with enough twists and turns to keep the reader eagerly anticipating the breathtaking conclusion.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book excerpt: The thug was dragging Karen away when Pete finally mustered the strength to pull himself to a sitting position. He tried to move toward the door, but they had already exited. Pete watched them pass the window and the biggest, ugliest man he had ever laid eyes on literally threw Karen into the elevator. Jumbo tucked a gun into his shoulder holster. Pete flashed back to Billy's description of Percy the manimal. He'd heard Karen call his name. At least there apparently weren't two gruesome men in the world that were as ugly as this one. Pete would give a million bucks right now for a shotgun to blow Percy's ass all over the hotel. Helpless against the armed giant in his present condition, Pete could only slump to the floor as they drove away. What seemed like hours later he slowly clawed his way up the side of the bed. He searched for the telephone to alert Jim Hardin. If she really intended to take the hoodlum to the CD's, Jim was in immediate danger. Pen's phone rang emptily until the answering machine picked up. Pete did all he could at the moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trade and Intercourse Acts passed by Congress between 1796 and 1834 set up a system for individuals to receive monetary compensation from the federal government for property stolen or destroyed by American Indians. By the end of the Mexican-American War, both Anglo-Americans and Nuevomexicanos became experts in exploiting this system—and in using the army to collect on their often-fraudulent claims. As Gregory F. Michno reveals in Depredation and Deceit, their combined efforts created a precarious mix of false accusations, public greed, and fabricated fear that directly led to new wars in the American Southwest between 1849 and 1855. Tasked with responding to white settlers’ depredation claims and gaining restitution directly from Indian groups, soldiers typically had no choice but to search out often-innocent Indians and demand compensation or the surrender of the guilty party, turning once-friendly bands into enemy groups whenever these tense encounters exploded in violence. As the situation became more volatile, citizens demanded a greater army presence in the region, and lucrative military contracts became yet another reason to encourage the continuation of frontier violence. Although the records are replete with officers questioning accusations and discovering civilians’ deceit, more often than not the army was forced to act in direct counterpoint to its duties as a constabulary force. And whenever war broke out, the acquisition of more Indian land and wealth began the cycle of greed and violence all over again. The Trade and Intercourse Acts were manipulated by Anglo-Americans who ensured the continuation of the very conflicts that they claimed to abhor and that the acts were designed to prevent. In bringing these machinations to light, Michno’s book deepens—and darkens—our understanding of the conquest of the American Southwest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chain of Deceit Book 1 is a story that starts in the later years of World War II with mission to end World War II. The plan was to drop the first atomic bomb on Berlin. Moving the first untested atomic bomb across the Atlantic Ocean during a war was not going to be easy and had to remain completely secret; not even the crew or Marines guarding the bomb knew what was in the crates. Little did they know that two crates were the bomb and two more were loaded with gold bullion. The captain of the Liberty ship hated the war and had his own idea as to how to end it. But the best-laid plans go to hell when the shooting starts, as they say. The war made it easy for a group of ruthless men to create a black market ring and sell stolen military hardware and supplies. Davin Pierce, ex–Army first sergeant and now Marine insurance investigator, is assigned to investigate why military hardware is in a warehouse in New Orleans and not at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean as reported. This is the start of a series that touches on many aspects of our lives, military, politics, love, hate, greed, deceit, and much more.

In the dark shadows of a sultry southern town, a serial killer strikes. It's an act of sinister precision that has happened many times before—because every victim is an offering to a hunger that can never be sated. When Caitlyn Montgomery Bandeaux wakes up covered in blood, she has no memory of the night before. Only later does she learn that her estranged husband was brutally murdered…like so many others she has known. Wanted by the police and haunted by horrifying, fragmented memories, Caitlyn turns to Adam Hunt, the town's new psychologist. But even as she and Adam grow closer, Caitlyn wonders how much she can trust him. With the killer still at large, the only think she knows for sure is that those who appear innocent are usually the most evil.
