There are so many disturbing aspects of this story it's difficult not to resort to name calling. Besides the fact the FBI'S Unabomber task force had its head up its ass by ganging up for 15 years against the only profilers that made sense. Add, the FBI San Francisco Field office refusal to investigate the Bari/Cherney bombing insisting on the fiction they were guilty of transporting a bomb when their own FBI lab found it was an motion-detection detonated anti-personal pipe bomb and it was obvious FBI SA FRANK DOYLE did more than lied, he participated in the crime. Fast forward ten months, when the FBI Santa Rosa office and the Mendocino Sherriff Department failed to respond to a Nationwide request from the Cambridge Police Department for information that would help them determine the motive of feminist Mary Joe Frugs execu- tion, even though the Lord's Avenger Letter was delivered in their area of responsibility (AO) and in case of the Mendocino Sheriff's Department the Lord's Avenger Letter was delivered in Ukiah their HQ. And It only gets worse, when Linda Ann Raynor of Santa Rosa (who had lived in West Santa Rosa at the same time as Judi Bari, also where the Old Santa Rosa Naval Airfield firebombing/attempted murder happened.) was executed in Connecticut on the first day of her visit there. Neither the Santa Rosa FBI office nor the Santa Rosa Police Dept. informed the Connecticut State Police about the opposition to her AIDS Hospice or the Lord's Avenger letter, resulting in a key piece of evidence a "Blue towel" being overlooked. A blue towel was used to wrap the Bari bomb but into this (Connecticut) blue towel the killer placed a pocket full of round stones into the center of the towel and swung it like a club killing her, so the CSP missed finding the blue towel. As for using the word "Executions" since it is the word cofounder of Christian Reconstructionism, Gary North uses to describe the capital punishment envisioned when they come to power. Stoning is the preferred biblical method of community executions.

This book examines the tactics of resistance developed by those working for the Weekly Mail and New Nation, two opposition newspapers published in South Africa in the mid- and late 1980s. The government, in an attempt to crack down on the massive political resistance sweeping the country, had imposed martial law and imposed even greater restrictions on the press. Bryan Trabold examines the writing, legal, and political strategies developed by those working for these newspapers to challenge the censorship restrictions as much as possible—without getting banned. Despite the many steps taken by the government to silence them, including detaining the editor of New Nation for two years and temporarily closing both newspapers, the Weekly Mail and New Nation not only continued to publish but actually increased their circulations and obtained strong domestic and international support. New Nation ceased publication in 1994 after South Africa made the transition to democracy, but the Weekly Mail, now the Mail & Guardian, continues to publish and remains one of South Africa’s most respected newspapers.

Book excerpt: This volume aims to explain the mechanisms for the “epidemic-like” rise in homicide rates São Paulo, Brazil during the late 20th century as well as their sharp decrease after 2000. The homicide rates increased 900 percent from 1960s-2000, and then dropped relatively quickly to 1970s levels over the next decade. While the author finds the Brazilian military government and rise of para-military police forces to be a major factor in the rise of homicide rates in Brazil, research on violent crime trends has demonstrated that it is generally due to the intersection of many factors (for example changes in policing, social or political structures, availability of weapons, economic influences) rather than a single cause. This work integrates individual, neighborhood, and structural dynamics at play in both the rise and drop in homicide rates, and provides a framework for understanding similar phenomena in other regions, particularly in the developing world. This book will be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, as well as political science, and international relations, particularly with an interest in South America. The methodology includes both qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Yet while some killers are pilloried and punished, others are absolved and acquitted, and still others are lauded and lionized. Why? The traditional answer is that how killers are treated depends on the nature of their killing, whether it was aggressive or defensive, intentional or accidental. But those factors cannot explain the enormous variation in legal officials' and citizens' responses to real-life homicides. Cooney argues that a radically new style of thought—pure sociology—can. Conceived by the sociologist Donald Black, pure sociology makes no reference to psychology, to any single person's intent, or even to individuals as such. Instead, pure sociology explains behavior in terms of its social geometry—its location and direction in a multidimensional social space. Is Killing Wrong? provides the most comprehensive assessment of pure sociology yet attempted. Drawing on data from well over one hundred societies, including the modern-day United States, it represents the most thorough account yet of case-level social control, or the response to conduct defined as wrong. In doing so, it demonstrates that the law and morality of homicide are neither universal nor relative but geometrical, as predicted by Black's theory.

W. John Green examines the entire system of political murder: the methods and justifications the perpetrators employ, the victims, and the consequences for Latin American societies. Green demonstrates that elite and state actors have been responsible for most political murders, assassinating the leaders of popular movements and other messengers of change. Latin American elites have also often targeted the potential audience for these messages through the region's various "dirty wars." In spite of regional differences, elites across the region have displayed considerable uniformity in justifying their use of murder, imagining themselves in a class war with democratic forces. Salvadoran human rights advocates, however, have had to continually and publicly express their support of key provisions in the 1992 peace accords. This freedom of expression contributed to the punishment of those responsible for the murder of opposition leader Francisco Velis and medical student Adriano Vilanova. Human rights advocates have been less successful in other areas, however, including their opposition to amnesty laws for wartime human rights violators and their work against vigilante death squads. This study covers the 1992 peace accords, which include the removal of human rights abusers from the military, the creation of a truth commission and the demilitarization of public security. It also discusses the troubling indications that the government is once again reducing the space available for freedom of expression, including the undermining of the Office of the Human Rights Counsel, the hostile attitude of President Francisco Flores, evidence of internal espionage and a changing international context. Later chapters focus on police reform. The book concludes by presenting some suggestions for increasing freedom of expression in transitional societies such as El Salvador. There is much evidence that shows human rights are likely to be a better protected right when citizens and civil society institutions routinely exercise their right to freedom of expression.

The group claimed that it was attempting to preempt a coup, but it was quickly defeated as the senior surviving general, Haji Mohammad Suharto, drove the movement’s partisans out of Jakarta.
