This engaging summary presents an analysis of And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, a murder mystery novel which keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Ten people, all of whom have once committed a crime which has gone unpunished, are invited to a strange island, where they are then picked off one by one by a mysterious killer. And Then There Were None, published in 1939, is often considered to be Christie’s masterpiece and has spawned a slew of theatrical and cinematic interpretations. However, this is far from the only book Christie wrote: she is the author of 65 other detective novels and, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is the world’s bestselling author. It is hardly surprising that she was made a Dame in 1971 for her contribution to the literary world. Find out everything you need to know about And Then There Were None in a fraction of the time! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.7, University of Heidelberg, course: Introduction to Crime Fiction, language: English, abstract: The Golden Age is known as the time between the two world wars. During this time, many crime fiction novels were written by several authors. The Mysterious Affair at Styles 1920 by Agatha Christie is often seen as the first novel of the Golden Age crime fiction and In the Teeth of the Evidence 1939 by Dorothy L. Sayers as the last one. The novels often represent social problems, which sounds controversial to the ‘golden’ notion. The crime fiction novels published in the Golden Age period have many common features which will be discussed in the following pages. The Golden Age features will be compared to Agatha Christie’s novel Death on the Nile (1937). There is a lot of research about crime novels during that period but only a few compare the features of the Golden Age to Death on the Nile, which is why I chose this novel for further analysis. Being a huge fan of crime fiction, I wanted to take a closer look at Agatha Christie’s writing style and see how it fits in the Golden Age period. One feature she followed is that murder becomes the main feature of the stories published in the Golden Age. By the 1920s words like ‘murder’ or ‘death’ began to be seen in the title (cf. Knight 2010: 86). Especially Agatha Christie’s book titles let the readers know what the book will be about before reading the summary on the cover (e.g. Death on the Nile, Death in the Clouds, Mrs. McGinty's Dead, Murder on the Orient Express), along with authors like Dorothy L. Sayers with Murder Must Advertise, Margery Allingham with Death of a Ghost and Ngaio Marsh with Death on Ecstasy. These four British authors - Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Margery Allingham, and Ngaio Marsh - were known as “The Big Four” or “The British Quartet”, but only Agatha Christie achieved the honour of being called the “Queen of Crime” (cf. Keitel 2008).

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive definition of the puzzle elements in Agatha Christie's novels, proposing the idea that murder stories can be deconstructed into three puzzle elements - Solution, Plot and Clues. It then analyses how well those puzzle elements work in the 21 novels of her principal detective, Hercule Poirot, published during what can fairly be regarded as the Golden Age of detective fiction (1918 - 1945). The analysis therefore covers Poirot's most famous novels such as The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder on the Orient Express, The ABC Murders and Death on the Nile.As Dr John Curran, the leading Agatha Christie expert, says in his Introduction, the book provides an accessible way for readers - not just Christie scholars but her general readership - to understand how the novels work as puzzles. And, as Scott Baker, the leading Christie memorabilia collector, says in his review on the Amazon Australia site, the book shows us just how incredible the novels are and is a must for the Christie scholar and fan alike. The book also gives readers the chance to re-live, at a readable length, the intrigue or cosiness of a favourite novel from a new perspective, reminding them how much they enjoyed, or were intrigued by, a particular solution, plot or clue and perhaps enabling them to appreciate points which they had not previously spotted. The book is unofficial in the sense that it has not been sponsored by Agatha Christie's estate but is the culmination of an extensive independent critical study of her work by the author. He brings to this challenge not only the enthusiasm and warmth of a lifelong Christie fan but also the forensic skills of a former lawyer who was for many years a partner in a major City firm in London. For more details about the book and the author, visit www.stylisheyepress.com.

These changes are grouped by underlying patterns into twenty-four categories. Their list includes activation, anticipation, amelioration, bohemisation, co-option, depopulation, entertainisation, glorification, human softening, importation, marital reduction, melodramatisation, multiplication, pejoration, political correction, political redirection, politicisation, reviving, romanticisation, social adjustment, social alerting, social correction, teaming and thrill intensification. These categories are postulated as adaptation strategies, suitable as a research tool in adaptation studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Styles was Christie's first published novel. It introduced Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp, and Arthur Hastings. Poirot, a Belgian refugee of the Great War, is settling in England near the home of Emily Inglethorp, who helped him to his new life. His friend Hastings arrives as a guest at her home. When the woman is killed, Poirot uses his detective skills to solve the mystery. The book includes maps of the house, the murder scene, and a drawing of a fragment of a will. The true first publication of the novel was as a weekly serial in The Times, including the maps of the house and other illustrations included in the book. This novel was one of the first ten books published by Penguin Books when it began in 1935.This first mystery novel by Agatha Christie was well received by reviewers. An analysis in 1990 was positive about the plot, considered the novel one of the few by Christie that is well-anchored in time and place, a story that knows it describes the end of an era, and mentions that the plot is clever. Christie had not mastered cleverness in her first novel, as "too many clues tend to cancel each other out"; this was judged a difficulty "which Conan Doyle never satisfactorily overcame, but which Christie would."

Book excerpt: This study shows how she sought to reconcile her attachment to the Victorian past with her recognition of a new society that undermined established order and in doing so gave more opportunities to women, confused class-boundaries, extended tolerance, allowed the cult of pleasure and self-assertion and revealed the ambiguities of respectability.
