Book excerpt: The students of today tell their stories of adversity and growth in letters to the original Freedom Writers—authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Freedom Writers Diary—who write supportive and powerful letters in response. Over twenty years ago, the students in first-year teacher Erin Gruwell’s high school class in Long Beach, California, were labeled “unteachable”—but she saw past that. Instead of treating them as scores on a test, she understood that each of them had a unique story to tell. Inspired by books like Anne Frank’s diary, her students began writing their own diaries, eventually dubbing themselves the Freedom Writers. Together, they co-authored The Freedom Writers Diary, which launched a movement that remains incredibly relevant and impactful today. Their stories speak to young people who feel as if those around them do not care about their lives, their feelings, and their struggles. They want to be heard; they want to be seen. In Dear Freedom Writer, the next generation of Freedom Writers shares its struggles with abuse, racism, discrimination, poverty, mental health, imposed borders, LGBTQIA+ identity, and police violence. Each story is answered with a letter of advice from an original Freedom Writer. With empathy and honesty, they address these young people not with the platitudes of a politician or a celebrity, but with the pragmatic advice of people who have dealt with these same issues and come out on the other side. Through its eye-opening and inspiring stories, Dear Freedom Writer paints an unflinchingly honest portrait of today’s youth and offers a powerful message of perseverance, understanding, and hope.

Book excerpt: Harriet, the author of her college newspaper's pseudonymous student advice column "Dear Emma," is great at telling others what to do, dispensing wisdom for the lovelorn and lonely on her Midwestern campus. Somehow, though, she can't take her own advice, especially after Keith, the guy she's dating, blows her off completely. When Harriet discovers that Keith has started seeing the beautiful and intimidating Remy, she wants to hate her. But she can't help warming to Remy, who soon writes to "Dear Emma" asking for romantic advice. Now Harriet has the perfect opportunity to take revenge on the person who broke her heart. But as she begins to doubt her own motivations and presumably faultless guidance, she's forced to question how much she really knows about love, friendship and well-meaning advice.

Book excerpt: Newly returned to the demon-infested Underdark, Drizzt Do’Urden faces his most dangerous adventure yet Drizzt is going home, but not to Mithral Hall or to Icewind Dale. He's going to Menzoberranzan, the very place he left as a young and outcast drow. Something terrible—immense—unspeakable, has come to the City of Spiders, leaving death and destruction in its wake. As the damage of the Darkening, of war, and of a demon-ravaged Underdark sends cracks out across the North, causing irreparable damage, Drizzt and his companions find their lives endangered once more. When the primordial of Gauntlgrym stirs, Catti-brie and Gromph venture to the ruins of the Host Tower of the Arcane in Luskan, seeking the only power that can keep the beast in check. Meanwhile, Jarlaxle holds the strings for them all, orchestrating a masterpiece of manipulation that brings old enemies together, and tears old friends apart. But even the wily and resourceful Jarlaxle may not realize just how narrow a path he walks. The City of Spiders might already have fallen to the demons and their wicked prince. What's to say the demons will stop there? Maestro is the second book in the Homecoming trilogy and the thirty-second book in the Legend of Drizzt series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TERENCE (Publius Terentius Afer, c. 195-159 B.C.), was a north African of Carthage. He was brought to Rome as a household slave of the Roman Terentius Lucanus, who had him educated and freed. Terence was then admitted to the society of Roman nobles who liked literature; for them chiefly he composed six Latin comedies (based on Greek models), all of which are extant. Gifted with an intimate knowledge of human nature, but preferring the kindly to the cruel, he presents us, in polished poetry, with loving parents and children, gentle masters, and faithful slaves, well suited to the Roman circle for which he was writing. Even where social behavior is not high, there is refinement and subtle humour. At least one of the plays has a very modern look. Indeed none of them is specially related to his own time; all however are meant to reproduce life as presented by playwrights of the 'New Comedy' (especially Menander) at Athens about a century earlier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food blogs are everywhere today but for generations, information and opinions about food were found in the food sections of newspapers in communities large and small. Until the early 1970s, these sections were housed in the women’s pages of newspapers—where women could hold an authoritative voice. The food editors—often a mix of trained journalist and home economist—reported on everything from nutrition news to features on the new chef in town. They wrote recipes and solicited ideas from readers. The sections reflected the trends of the time and the cooks of the community. The editors were local celebrities, judging cooking contests and getting calls at home about how to prepare a Thanksgiving turkey. They were consumer advocates and reporters for food safety and nutrition. They helped make James Beard and Julia Child household names as the editors wrote about their television appearances and reviewed their cookbooks. These food editors laid the foundation for the food community that Nora Ephron described in her classic 1968 essay, “The Food Establishment,” and eventually led to the food communities of today. Included in the chapters are profiles of such food editors as Jane Nickerson, Jeanne Voltz, and Ruth Ellen Church, who were unheralded pioneers in the field, as well as Cecily Brownstone, Poppy Cannon, and Clementine Paddleford, who are well known today; an analysis of their work demonstrates changes in the country’s culinary history. The book concludes with a look at how the women’s pages folded at the same time that home economics saw its field transformed and with thoughts about the foundation that these women laid for the food journalism of today.
