Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mother and daughter, KC and Bryn detail their two-year battle with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. Ascending the Fourteener of Recovery was written to offer hope and inspiration to others embarking on their own arduous, ever-changing path to healing. As the mother-daughter duo lead others through their descent into the hellacious trenches of a mental disorder with the highest mortality rates, KC reveals how she stopped at nothing to find help and save her daughter’s life. Bryn discloses how the power of her mind first guided her into the darkness of an unhealthy relationship with food, and then led her out into the light of recovery thanks, in part, to FBT (Family Based Treatment). When KC Tillman gave birth in 2000, she never imagined that her precious bundle of joy would become embroiled in a fight for her life just sixteen years later. She shares the difficulties of parenting a teen with a stigmatized mental illness. Bryn Tillman grew up setting impossibly high expectations for herself that produced feelings of inadequacy, imperfection, and failure. She mistakenly believed that everyone else also hated their reflection in the mirror and constantly strived to be a better physical being like she did. Little did Bryn know how wrong she was. Ascending the Fourteener of Recovery is the moving story of a teenager’s battle with anorexia and her mother’s tenacity in beating it while holding on tightly to hope.

Book excerpt: In the third volume of the Eleanor of Acquitaine novels, Eleanor finds herself torn between her early love for Henry II of England and resistance to his constant bullying of her and her sons in his fear of being superceded by his ambitious offspring. His paranoia leads him to imprison her to curtail her powers, but this makes her only more determined to resist him and defend her birthright, while, at the same time, reining in her sons’ impulses to overthrow him. Who will win out—the autocratic Henry, or the resourceful Eleanor? It seems time may be on her side…

Book excerpt: This volume, the conclusion of Leon Edel's splendid edition, rounds off a half century of work on James by the noted biographer-critic. In the letters of the novelist's last twenty years a new Henry James is revealed. Edel's generous selection shows us, as he says, a "looser, less formal, less distant" personality, a man writing with greater candor and with more emotional freedom, who "has at last opened himself up to the physical things of life." The decade embracing the turn of the century is the most productive period of James's career. Happily settled in an English country house and now dictating to a typist, he is able to write The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl in three years. The letters show clearly how his fiction turned from his world-famous tales of international society to the life of passion in his last novels. His new friends and correspondents include Conrad, H. G. Wells, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, and several young men to whom he writes curious, half-inhibited love letters. Mrs. Wharton, with her chauffered "chariot of fire," introduces him to the thrill of motoring and welcomes him into her cosmopolitan circle; to him she embodies the affluence and driving energy of the America of the Gilded Age. For the first time in over twenty years he revisits his homeland, traveling not only in the East but through the South to Florida and west to California. He is dismayed by the materialism he finds and the changed ways of life. Back in England, he plunges into several projects; for the New York edition of his works he revises the early novels and writes his famous prefaces. His relations with agents and publishers as well as family and friends are fully documented in the letters, as are his trips to the Continent and visits with Edith Wharton in Paris. His last years are darkened by a long siege of nervous ill health and by the death of his beloved brother William. But he carries on, moves back to London, and continues to work. Among the most eloquent of all his letters are those describing his anguished reaction to the Great War. To show his allegiance to the Allied cause, he becomes a British citizen, six months before his death. The volume concludes with his "final and fading words" dictated on his deathbed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Dreiser led a long and controversial life, almost always pursuing some serious question, and not rarely pursuing women. This collection, the second volume of Dreiser correspondence to be published by the University of Illinois Press, gathers previously unpublished letters Dreiser wrote to women between 1893 and 1945, many of them showing personal feelings Dreiser revealed nowhere else. Here he both preens and mocks himself, natters and scolds, relates his jaunts with Mencken and his skirmishes with editors and publishers. He admits his worries, bemoans his longings, and self-consciously embarks on love letters that are unafraid to smolder and flame. To one reader he sends “Kisses, Kisses, Kisses, for your sweety mouth” and urges his needy requests: “Write me a love-letter Honey girl.” Alongside such amorous play, he often expressed his deepest feelings on philosophical, religious, and social issues that characterize his public writing. Chronologically arranged and meticulously edited by Thomas P. Riggio, these letters reveal how wide and deep Dreiser’s needs were. Dreiser often discussed his writing in his letters to women friends, telling them what he wanted to do, where he thought he succeeded and failed, and seeking approval or criticism. By turns seductive, candid, coy, and informative, these letters provide an intimate view of a master writer who knew exactly what he was after.

Book excerpt: Numinous is the name of the Christian ministry started by Carl & Kim Creasman in 1998. At the core of Carl's vision lies a hope, a dream of actually being a united group of fellow nomads on a journey together, experiencing the life of Christian believers connected deeply to one another. That story is the reality of the first church, if the history written in the book of Acts is to be believed. This book, then, is a collection of writings defining the concept of community, explaining why it matters, and demonstrating how Numinous Church does it. These writings challenge long held assumptions about what "church" means and how it is important for today. The compilation contains three selections: a theological exposition of the ideas that inspired the birth of Numinous written in 2003, a shorter collection of Carl's newsletter articles on the theology of community written in 2007, and a collection of Carl's emails to the church body of Numinous over the years since the church's start in 2000.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully annotated edition of more than 1600 letters from and to Gerald Finzi, spanning the composer's life from ca. the early 1920s up until his untimely death in 1956. Gerald Finzi's (1901-1956) masterpiece is the radiant and touching cantata Dies Natalis. He is also highly regarded for his Thomas Hardy song-settings, for his Intimations of Immortality, and for his fine cello and clarinet concertos. As a scholar, he championed the then neglected composers Hubert Parry and Ivor Gurney, and the eighteenth-century John Stanley, William Boyce and Richard Mudge, composers he revived with the amateur orchestra he founded. Diana McVeagh, Finzi's biographer, brings together more than 1600 letters from and to Gerald Finzi, spanning the composer's life from the early 1920s until his untimely death in 1956. His more than 160 correspondents include Ralph Vaughan Williams, Herbert Howells, Edmund Rubbra, Arthur Bliss and Howard Ferguson, Michael Tippett, Benjamin Britten and Sir John Barbirolli, the poet Edmund Blunden, and the artist John Aldridge, making this a portrait not only of Gerald Finzi but also of his group of composer, musician and artist friends in the first half of the twentieth century. In these mostly unpublished letters Finzi emerges as a multi-faceted and complex character, developing from a solitary, introverted youth into a man with strong views and wide interests: education, pacifism, vegetarianism, the Arts and Crafts movement and the English pastoral tradition, among others. From amusing trivia to the deeply serious ideas and principles Finzi set out at the onset of war and in the 1950s, these letters allow for first-hand insights into his personality and background. This definitive edition is fully annotated, offering context with substantial commentaries on the correspondence, illustrations by Joy Finzi, a chronology, bibliography and a catalogue of works.

Book excerpt: These ingenious interviews will amuse, provoke and delight. Veering from the intensely serious to the wildly silly, Dead Interviews grants writers the chance to sit down with their heroes and flex their cerebral muscles, or simply indulge in some bookish gossip with a deceased icon. Pitch-perfect mimesis meets razor sharp literary criticism in the book that refuses to let dead writers lie. The contributors: Rick Moody on Jimi Hendrix, Cynthia Ozick on Henry James, Douglas Coupland on Andy Warhol, Sam Leith on John Berryman, Geoff Dyer on Friedrich Nietzsche, A. M. Homes on Richard Nixon, David Mitchell on Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, John Burnside on Rachel Carson, ZZ Packer on Monsieur de Saint-George, Michel Faber on Marcel Duchamp, Rebecca Miller on the Marquis de Sade, Ian Rankin on Arthur Conan Doyle and Joyce Carol Oates on Robert Frost.
