Book excerpt: Game Warden Mike Bowditch's engagement party is interrupted by the discovery of a gruesome double murder in Dead Man's Wake, a thriller from Edgar Award-nominated author Paul Doiron. On the evening of their engagement party, Maine Game Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch and Stacey Stevens witness what seems to be a hit-and-run speedboat crash on a darkened lake. When they arrive at the scene, their spotlight reveals a gruesome sight: a severed arm floating just beneath the surface. As day breaks, the warden dive team recovers not one but two naked corpses: a dismembered man and the married woman with whom he was having an affair. Mike begins to suspect the swimmers' deaths were not a senseless accident but a coldly calculated murder. Meanwhile, the hunt is on for the mysterious boater. Suspects abound on the lake, nicknamed "Golden Pond,” including the violent biker husband of the murdered woman who may have taken vengeance on his wife and her paramour; a strange woman who claims to have witnessed the crash, but then changes her story; a very aggressive realtor and his wife who were determined to catch trespassers; and the lake’s earnest young constable whose eagerness to help may hide darker motives. Alone among his fellow officers, Mike starts to sense the involvement of a trained marksman, smarter and more dangerous than any enemy he has ever faced before. As Mike and Stacey get closer to identifying the killer, their own lives are suddenly on the line as they confront a lethal killer who plans to silence them forever. The finale is a tour de force of drama and suspense.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventh in a series continues this non-academic author's ground-breaking word-by-word analysis of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake. This volume covers chapters 2.4, 3.1 and 3.2 with the intent to explore them as art objects. In Chapter 2.4 spirit imperialists attack love. Love, particularly the spontaneous kind, is an outpost of freedom and more possibilities. That outpost is a threat to the status quo regime of the imperialists and puts its central committee on alert. The imperialist control effort focuses on the two main sources of spontaneous love, the natural nurturing tendency of human females and the giving spirit of Jesus. One pure expression of this kind of control is the arranged marriage, an institution that often serves political interests. In arranged marriages, control trumps love. The arranged part of the marriage is usually the female. The arranged marriage makes spontaneous love illicit. This chapter presents love suffering from control in the context of two arranged marriages: Joyce's version of Isolde to King Mark in Tristan and Isolde ["T&I"] and Jesus to the church in the Gospels. The result in both cases is the same: love fused to death and a relationship barren of new offspring. The spirit mates in this chapter are King Mark from T&I and Evangelist Mark. The Book of Mark as edited reduced the independent and loving Christ to the "suffering servant," and Tristan died at the Cliff of Penmark, just as the real Christ died at the pen of Mark. Editors, the hated object of Joyce's early life as an author, fuse the stories. Another common element in the themes is the threat of the new replacing the old: Tristan replacing King Mark and the Son religion replacing the Father religion. This threat is announced at the opening of chapter 2.4. Part 3 brings us Shaun's chapters, chapters that feature his spirit. He is exhibited as a spirit imperialist in marching pants stained by an anal retentive childhood experience outlined in earlier chapters. He is stuck in the past, to influences from the past. Put another way and more to the point, the past is stuck in him. In Joyce's images, he has remained subject to the "son" or past family experiences in his soul and has not arisen to the independent "sun" in the present. Their dream character connects these Part 3 chapters to the altered mind state that produced the Book of Revelations, the source of formal elegance for these chapters. Shaun is cast in the mould of the closed spirit of the Anti-Christ [AC] and Shem in the mould of the open spirit of Christ [C]. Following the forehead allegiance indicator used in Revelations, these two chapters end after Shaun/Jaun puts a postage stamp on his forehead, he as the envelope of a message from others. His message is fear of unrestricted life possibilities because of its sufferings. His postage stamp is yellow for fear, but he has no spirit of his own, no message of his own to deliver. By contrast, Shem's spirit has risen within himself from dependence to independence, like the phoenix bird of myth that creates itself young from its own ashes. That mythical ascent ends chapter 3.2.

Book excerpt: An original and profound portrait of contemporary Britain told through the testimonies of its inhabitants. SHORTLISTED FOR THE RATHBONES FOLIO PRIZE 2023 'A spectacularly enjoyable and compelling reading experience . . . funny, moving, surprising and thought-provoking. It humanises literature in this toxic moment.' MAX PORTER, author of Lanny 'Seemingly simple yet so deeply profound, The Passengers is an absorbing insight into the lives and minds of so-called ordinary people: their hopes and fears and idiosyncrasies at a specific moment in time.' CLIO BARNARD, director of Ali & Ava and The Essex Serpent 'A nation's psyche comes to the surface. The Passengers is not just an oral history of the contemporary moment but, drenched in mood and texture, renders the country itself as a sonic collage.' SUKHDEV SANDHU, GUARDIAN Between October 2018 and March 2021, Will Ashon collected voices - people talking about their lives, needs, dreams, loves, hopes and fears - all of them with some connection to the British Isles. He used a range of methods including letters sent to random addresses, hitchhiking, referrals from strangers and so on. He conducted the interviews in person, on the phone, over the internet or asked people to record themselves. Interview techniques ranged from asking people to tell him a secret to choosing an arbitrary question from a list. The resulting testimonies tell the collective story of what it feels like to be alive in a particular time and place - here and now. The Passengers is a book about how we give shape to our lives, find meaning in the chaos, acknowledge the fragility of our existence while alleviating this anxiety with moments of beauty, love, humour and solidarity. 'A magical mystery tour of Britain . . . extraordinary.' DAILY TELEGRAPH 'Ashon's gloriously polyphonic book scales the heights. A deeply felt and humane portrait of where we are.' NIVEN GOVINDEN, author of Diary of a Film 'This book couldn't have come into my life at a better time. It's a guiding mate. It enters like a cat through a window, ready to take your attention and show you what it needs to.' TICE CIN, author of Keeping the House

They work to outwit the bully gang and their leader, a gang that now seems so primitive and pathetic. Compared to what they have learned and what awaits them; dealing with a gang of bullies is just too easy. Once again they are transported and transformed. Finally in the ‘other’ world, the adrenalin rush is amazing. But something is different. Something is wrong. An unfolding trail of horror awaits them. It leads them to a revelation that will unsettle them all and draw some of the team toward pending destruction; like a moth to a flame. Steven strives to discover what is behind the combat that they must endure. Combat that they once enjoyed, now seems to have turned to harsh reality and has such a sinister edge. Their lust for war and domination seems to have led them to such bad places. Steven drives the team to discover the true purpose behind the world and why they are there. He feels it is the only way to truly prevail. Finally a revelation, a shocking truth that will fracture the team; send them head long into conflict and chaos. Can they recover from this truth? What will it lead to? There can be no solace. Little did they know that the terror they have unleashed would impact on our world. Earth. The evil they have wrought; the evil within.

Generally, nobody, in fact, cares about these victims, felons, and the dead, one way or another, well unless they start stinking up the joint. Then someone's going to start looking- if only to put a stop to the offense. Here are 16 stories written over the last twenty years, each showing a different element of human depravity and desperation, wrongdoing, and retribution.
