Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein's Special Relativity (E-SR) is the cornerstone of physics. De Sitter invariant SR (dS/AdS-SR) is a natural extension of E-SR, hence it relates to the foundation of physics. This book provides a description to dS/AdS-SR in terms of Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formulation associated with spacetime metric of inertial reference frames. One of the outstanding features of the book is as follows: All discussions on SR are in the inertial reference frames. This is a requirement due to the first principle of SR theory. The descriptions on dS/AdS-SR in this book satisfy this principle. For the curved spacetime in dS/AdS-SR theory, it is highly non-trivial.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the Projective approach to de Sitter Relativity. It traces the development of renewed interest in models of the universe at constant positive curvature such as "vacuum" geometry. The De Sitter Theory of Relativity, formulated in 1917 with Willem De Sitter's solution of the Einstein equations, was used in different fields during the 1950s and 1960s, in the work of H. Bacry, J.M. LevyLeblond and F.Gursey, to name some important contributors. From the 1960s to 1980s, L. Fantappié and G. Arcidiacono provided an elegant group approach to the De Sitter universe putting the basis for special and general projective relativity. Today such suggestions flow into a unitary scenario, and this way the De Sitter Relativity is no more a "missing opportunity" (F. Dyson, 1972), but has a central role in theoretical physics. In this volume a systematic presentation is given of the De Sitter Projective relativity, with the recent developments in projective general relativity and quantum cosmology.

Book excerpt: This book offers a presentation of the special theory of relativity that is mathematically rigorous and yet spells out in considerable detail the physical significance of the mathematics. It treats, in addition to the usual menu of topics one is accustomed to finding in introductions to special relativity, a wide variety of results of more contemporary origin. These include Zeeman’s characterization of the causal automorphisms of Minkowski spacetime, the Penrose theorem on the apparent shape of a relativistically moving sphere, a detailed introduction to the theory of spinors, a Petrov-type classification of electromagnetic fields in both tensor and spinor form, a topology for Minkowski spacetime whose homeomorphism group is essentially the Lorentz group, and a careful discussion of Dirac’s famous Scissors Problem and its relation to the notion of a two-valued representation of the Lorentz group. This second edition includes a new chapter on the de Sitter universe which is intended to serve two purposes. The first is to provide a gentle prologue to the steps one must take to move beyond special relativity and adapt to the presence of gravitational fields that cannot be considered negligible. The second is to understand some of the basic features of a model of the empty universe that differs markedly from Minkowski spacetime, but may be recommended by recent astronomical observations suggesting that the expansion of our own universe is accelerating rather than slowing down. The treatment presumes only a knowledge of linear algebra in the first three chapters, a bit of real analysis in the fourth and, in two appendices, some elementary point-set topology. The first edition of the book received the 1993 CHOICE award for Outstanding Academic Title. Reviews of first edition: “... a valuable contribution to the pedagogical literature which will be enjoyed by all who delight in precise mathematics and physics.” (American Mathematical Society, 1993) “Where many physics texts explain physical phenomena by means of mathematical models, here a rigorous and detailed mathematical development is accompanied by precise physical interpretations.” (CHOICE, 1993) “... his talent in choosing the most significant results and ordering them within the book can’t be denied. The reading of the book is, really, a pleasure.” (Dutch Mathematical Society, 1993)

Book excerpt: This Element presents the philosophy of special relativity: from the foundations of the theory in Newtonian mechanics, through its birth out of the ashes of 19th Century ether theory, through the various conceptual paradoxes which the theory presents, and finally arriving at some of its connections with Einstein's later theory of general relativity. It illustrates concepts such as inertial frames, force-free motion, and dynamical versus geometrical understandings of physics, the standard hierarchy of classical spacetimes, the concept of a symmetry of a physical theory, Poincaré invariant, Einstein's 1905 derivation of the Lorentz transformations, spacetime structure from Aristotle to Minkowski, general covariance, dynamical and geometrical approaches to spacetime, the conventionality of simultaneity, Frame-dependent effects, and the twin paradox.

Book excerpt: The papers contained in this volume are lectures and seminars presented at the 20th "Universitatswochen fUr Kernphysik" in Schladming in February 1981. The goal of this school was to review some rapidly developing branches in mathematical physics. Thanks to the generous support provided by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, the Styrian Government and other sponsors, it has been possible to keep up with the - by now already traditional - standards of this school. The lecture notes have been reexamined by the authors after the school and are now published in their final form, so that a larger number of physicists may profit from them. Because of necessary limitations in space all de tails connected with the meeting have been omitted and only brief outlines of the seminars were incl~ded. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for their efforts, which made it possible to speed up the publi cation. Thanks are also due to Mrs. Krenn for the careful typing of the notes. H. Mitter L. INTRODUCTION It was first recognized by Hunziker [1] that the notions of scattering theory play an important role in classical mechanics. It turned out [2] that it leads to non-trivial information for the global properties of the solutions of the classical trajectories.

It presents Einstein's theory of space and time in detail, and describes the large scale structure of space, time and velocity as a new cosmological special relativity. A cosmological Lorentz-like transformation, which relates events at different cosmic times, is derived and applied. A new law of addition of cosmic times is obtained, and the inflation of the space at the early universe is derived, both from the cosmological transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an essential bridge between college-level introductions and advanced graduate-level books on special relativity. It begins at an elementary level, presenting and discussing the basic concepts normally covered in college-level works, including the Lorentz transformation. Subsequent chapters introduce the four-dimensional worldview implied by the Lorentz transformations, mixing time and space coordinates, before continuing on to the formalism of tensors, a topic usually avoided in lower-level courses. The book’s second half addresses a number of essential points, including the concept of causality; the equivalence between mass and energy, including applications; relativistic optics; and measurements and matter in Minkowski space-time. The closing chapters focus on the energy-momentum tensor of a continuous distribution of mass-energy and its co-variant conservation; angular momentum; a discussion of the scalar field of perfect fluids and the Maxwell field; and general coordinates. Every chapter is supplemented by a section with numerous exercises, allowing readers to practice the theory. These exercises constitute an essential part of the textbook, and the solutions to approximately half of them are provided in the appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Special Theory of Relativity provides a discussion of the special theory of relativity. Special relativity is not, like other scientific theories, a statement about the matter that forms the physical world, but has the form of a condition that the explicit physical theories must satisfy. It is thus a form of description, playing to some extent the role of the grammar of physics, prescribing which combinations of theoretical statements are admissible as descriptions of the physical world. Thus, to describe it, one needs also to describe those specific theories and to say how much they are limited by it. The book is organized into two parts. The first part traces the historical development of the special theory of relativity, including Einstein's contribution, the elementary consequences of the Lorentz transformation, and applications in quantum theory. The second part contains extracts from various publications covering topics such as relative motion of the earth, and the luminiferous and dynamics of the electron.

Book excerpt: Introducing Special Relativity provides an easy and rewarding way into special relativity for first and second year university students studying physics. The author establishes the fundamentals of relativity at the outset of this book so readers fully understand the principles and know how to them before moving on to subjects, like time dilation, that often are a source of difficulty for students. The primary topics addressed include conserved relativistic energy and momentum, applications of the Lorentz transformation, and developments in 20th-century physics. This volume also reviews some of the early experiments in the development of special relativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Broader View of Relativity shows that there is still new life in old physics. The book examines the historical context and theoretical underpinnings of Einstein's theory of special relativity and describes Broad Relativity, a generalized theory of coordinate transformations between inertial reference frames that includes Einstein's special relativity as a special case. It shows how the principle of relativity is compatible with multiple concepts of physical time and these different procedures for clock synchronization can be useful for thinking about different physical problems, including many-body systems and the development of a Lorentz-invariant thermodynamics. Broad relativity also provides new answers to old questions such as the necessity of postulating the constancy of the speed of light and the viability of Reichenbach's general concept of time. The book also draws on the idea of limiting-four-dimensional symmetry to describe coordinate transformations and the physics of particles and fields in non-inertial frames, particularly those with constant linear accelerations. This new edition expands the discussion on the role that human conventions and unit systems have played in the historical development of relativity theories and includes new results on the implications of broad relativity for clarifying the status of constants that are truly fundamental and inherent properties of our universe. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough discussion of the concepts and main consequences of special relativity. Treated in detail are the Lorentz transformations, their kinematical consequences (the so-called paradoxes), relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics as an example of a relativistic field theory, and the principal features of relativistic hydrodynamics. The book offers a logical development of special relativity from Einstein's principle of relativity alone; arrives at the essential statements of the theory by a direct approach — this emphasis is different from that of most books; and offers a concise introduction to tensor calculus as needed in special relativity. A selection of problems and documentation of the experimental tests of special relativity are given.
