Book excerpt: About the Book Daughters of Dunn House 1953 is a collection of first-person accounts from seven octogenarians who reflect upon overviews of their lives from 1953 to the present, lifelong friendships made at Dunn House dorm, and the exciting careers generated by the opportunity to participate in the Ford Foundation Early Entrant Program at Fisk University without having first finished high school. Stories should appeal to all ages, for topics range from pertinent historical eras, family genealogy, educational and personal experiences from childhood and adult levels, glimpses of undergraduate HBCUs in action versus several graduate institutions, explorations of places from the U.S. and abroad, to differences in character and personal problem solving. About the Author Hildred Roach, a retired professor from the University of D.C., earned music degrees from Fisk and Yale universities and did further study at the University of Ghana and the Juilliard School of Music. A pioneer of Black Music studies in the 1960s, she joined Peoples Congregational Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and was married to the late Atty. James Stafford. Her special interests are theater, genealogy, politics, comedy, and the promotion of peace and love among human beings. Co-Editor Maryann Rozzell, after graduating from Fisk University, received Certification in Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania and began her career just at the end of the polio era. She later earned a Master’s degree from George Washington University. Her interest in travel and service led her to volunteer programs in eight countries and to serve locally as an Elections Officer and hospital volunteer. She has been an active member of the local Fisk Alumni Association and since retirement, has delved into the world of genealogy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of Tudor women often offer faint but fascinating footnotes on the pages of history. The life of Catherine – or Katryn as her husband would one day pen her name – Carey, the daughter of Mary Boleyn and, as the weight of evidence suggests, Henry VIII, is one of those footnotes. As the possible daughter of Henry VIII, the niece of Anne Boleyn and the favourite of Elizabeth I, Catherine’s life offers us a unique perspective on the reigns of Henry and his children. In this book, Wendy J. Dunn takes these brief details of Catherine’s life and turns them into a rich account of a woman who deserves her story told. Following the faint trail provided of her life from her earliest years to her death in service to Queen Elizabeth, Dunn examines the evidence of Catherine’s parentage and views her world through the lens of her relationship with the royal family she served. This book presents an important story of a woman who saw and experienced much tragedy and political turmoil during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I – all of which prepared her to take on the vital role of one of Elizabeth I closest and most trusted women. It also prepared her to become the wife of one of Elizabeth's privy councillors – a man also trusted and relied on by the queen. Catherine served Elizabeth during the uncertain and challenging first years of her reign, a time when there was a question mark over whether she would succeed as queen regnant after the failures of England's first crowned regnant, her sister Mary. Through immense research and placing her in the context of her period, HENRY VIII’S TRUE DAUGHTER: CATHERINE CAREY, A TUDOR LIFE draws Catherine out of the shadows of history to take her true place as the daughter of Henry VIII and shows how vital women like Catherine were to Elizabeth and the ultimate victory of her reign.

Book excerpt: INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the author of the New York Times bestseller Homecoming—“An ambitious, compelling historical mystery with a fabulous cast of characters…Kate Morton at her very best.” —Kristin Hannah “An elaborate tapestry…Morton doesn’t disappoint.” —The Washington Post "Classic English country-house Goth at its finest." —New York Post In the depths of a 19th-century winter, a little girl is abandoned on the streets of Victorian London. She grows up to become in turn a thief, an artist’s muse, and a lover. In the summer of 1862, shortly after her eighteenth birthday, she travels with a group of artists to a beautiful house on a bend of the Upper Thames. Tensions simmer and one hot afternoon a gunshot rings out. A woman is killed, another disappears, and the truth of what happened slips through the cracks of time. It is not until over a century later, when another young woman is drawn to Birchwood Manor, that its secrets are finally revealed. Told by multiple voices across time, this is an intricately layered, richly atmospheric novel about art and passion, forgiveness and loss, that shows us that sometimes the way forward is through the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of North Yarmouth is captured in its motto the Town Where Others Began. Established as a large plantation in 1680, five towns grew and separated from the original settlement over the next 170 years, leaving behind a small rural community with two distinct villages. Farming and lumber-related industries dominated the life of residents until World War II. Church, school, and numerous social groups were the sources of entertainment when daily chores were done. North Yarmouth once boasted a hotel, a creamery, a library, a chinchilla ranch, and carriage makers. The town has grown and thrived over the last few decades, but still carefully preserves its important heritage. Around North Yarmouth illustrates the vibrant interwoven history of this town and the surrounding communities. Longtime residents with roots spanning many generations helped create this volume by sharing their cherished historic photographs and fascinating oral histories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blount County was carved out of the territory ceded to the State by the Creek Indians following their defeat at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The earliest settlers began streaming into the former wilderness as early as 1817. Blount was originally a large county, but over the decades pieces were taken to make up other adjoining counties such as Jefferson, Marshall, Etowah, and Cullman. Every cemetery within the contemporary boundaries of Blount was visited by the author and each readable tombstone was copied to develop the contents of this three volume series. Most of the cemeteries were read in 2002. Volume 1 covers alphabetically H through P, beginning with the Hipp Family Cemetery and concluding with the Phillips Cemetery (sometimes called the Old County Line Cemetery). This book is vital to any serious student of Blount County genealogy and history.

Book excerpt: Descendants of Thomas William Holland and Milley Boyett compiles information from many sources None of the records in my book have been imported from online histories. All of them have been entered by me and most have been verified not once, but several times. When I entered names, dates and other information from book sources, I attempted to verify the data with census, vital records or another source. An Old Holland Family Record Book that was originally owned by Thomas William Holland is the "Key" that opened research for this book. Living relatives and fellow researchers provided me with priceless information that I supported by vital statistics, census records, deeds and wills.
