Download or read book Rose Hill written by Carlos E. Cortés and published by Heyday.ORIM. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Jewish Mexican American author chronicles his family’s tumultuous, decades-long spars over religion, class, and culture in this candid, inspiring memoir. The son of a Mexican Catholic father with aristocratic roots and a mother of Eastern European Jewish descent, Carlos E. Cortés grew up wedged between cultures. He grew up “straddling borders, balancing loves and loyalties, and trying to fit into a world that wasn’t quite ready.” His request for a bar mitzvah sent his father into a cursing rage. He was terrified to bring home the Catholic girl he was dating, for fear of wounding his mother. When he tried to join a fraternity, Christians wouldn’t take him because he was Jewish, and Jews looked sideways at him because his father was Mexican. In Rose Hill, Cortés recounts his family’s experiences from his early years in legally segregated 1940s Kansas City to his return to Berkeley in the 1950s, and to his parents’ separation, reconciliation, deaths, and eventual burials at the Rose Hill Cemetery. Cortés elevates the theme of intermarriage to a new level of complexity in this closely observed and emotionally fraught memoir.

It provides teachers a way to negotiate the often conflicting goals of high-stakes testing, confident writing, the culturally inclusive classroom, and the teaching of standard English while also honoring other varieties of English. Novice and veteran teachers alike will appreciate the hands-on approach to grammar in the classroom that includes numerous examples and practical vignettes describing real teachers' real classroom experiences with specific grammar lessons - including ESL issues - as well as the chapters that review grammar basics. Book Synopsis Daughter of the Sun by : Carmen Sol Feliciano
Download or read book Daughter of the Sun written by Carmen Sol Feliciano and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many poems in this book of poetry and a short story were motivated by past and present dreams that the author has transposed into words and two languages (English and Spanish). The author turned those dreams into poems and managed to introduce her culture, people from her old neighborhood, relationships, memories of loved ones, and love at its highest and lowest. It's a poetic journey giving the reader a taste of life with its twists and turns. The short (and only) story in the book, "Lila Archmon" is filled with descriptive words that takes the reader onto a dream-like passage of fantasy transporting them into the garden with Lila and her precious friends. The poem "Salsa" introduces the reader to a dance that has withstood the passage of time - it is certainly a "feast" for all. "Soy Boricua" expresses the pride of being Boricua and gives a history as to the roots of the Puerto Rican. The two poems (and title of the book) "Daughter of the Sun I and II" can be interpreted by the readers, as they desire. When various people were asked to give their meanings of the poems, the multitude and variety of renditions were astounding.

Book Synopsis Dictionary of Spoken Spanish by : U. S. War Dept
Download or read book Dictionary of Spoken Spanish written by U. S. War Dept and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a complete, unabridged republication of a Dictionary of Spoken Spanish, which was specially prepared by nationally known linguists for the U.S. War Department (TM#30-900). It is compiled from spoken Spanish and emphasizes idiom and colloquial usage in both Castilian and Latin American areas. More than 16,000 entries provide exact translations of both English and Spanish sentences and phrases; as many as 60 idioms are listed under each entry. This is easily the largest list of idiomatic constructions ever published. Travelers, business people, and students who are interested in Latin American studies have found this dictionary their best source for those expressions of daily life and social activity not usually found in books. More than 18,000 idioms are given, not as isolated words that you have to conjugate or alter, but as complete sentences that you can use without change. A 25-page introduction provides a rapid survey of Spanish sounds, grammar, and syntax, with full consideration of irregular verbs. It is especially apt in its modern treatment of phrase and clause structure. A 17-page appendix gives translations of geographical names, numbers, national holidays for Spanish countries, important street signs, useful expressions of high frequency, and a unique 7-page glossary of Spanish and Spanish-American foods and dishes.

Book Synopsis Mexican Melodrama by : Elena Lahr-Vivaz
Download or read book Mexican Melodrama written by Elena Lahr-Vivaz and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mexican Melodrama, Elena Lahr-Vivaz explores the compelling ways that new-wave Mexican directors use the tropes and themes of Golden Age films to denounce the excesses of a nation characterized as a fragmented and fictitious construct. Analyzing big hits and quiet successes of both Golden Age and new-wave cinema, the author offers in each chapter a comparative reading of films from the two eras, considering, for instance, Amores perros (Love’s a Bitch, Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2000) alongside Nosotros los pobres (We the Poor, Ismael Rodríguez, 1947). Through such readings, Lahr-Vivaz examines how new-wave directors draw from a previous generation to produce meaning in the present. Mexico’s Golden Age of film—the period from the 1930s to the 1950s—is considered “golden” due to both the prestige of the era’s stars and the critical and popular success of the films released. Golden Age directors often turned to the tropes of melodrama and allegory to offer spectators an image of an idealized Mexico and to spur the formation of a spectatorship united through shared tears and laughter. In contrast, Lahr-Vivaz demonstrates that new-wave directors of the 1990s and 2000s use the melodramatic mode to present a vision of fragmentation and to open a space for critical resistance. In so doing, new-wave directors highlight the limitations rather than the possibilities of a unified spectatorship, and point to the need for spectators to assume a critical stance in the face of the exigencies of the present. Written in an accessible style, Mexican Melodrama offers a timely comparative analysis of critically acclaimed films that will serve as key referents in discussions of Mexican cinema for years to come.

This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating Space for Ourselves as Minoritized and Marginalized Faculty moves away from conventional faculty success books by providing early career faculty with innovative perspectives about successfully navigating the professoriate, while humanizing their lived experiences and naming the unspoken. Through the use of interdisciplinary methods, such as creative artistic expression, testimonios, and personal narratives, chapter authors share experiences learned about surviving, thriving, navigating, and succeeding as early career underrepresented and marginalized faculty. Chapters discuss issues such as navigating workplace hostility, finding community beyond the academy, work–life balance, and crafting a scholarly identity, while also offering little-known tips about how to survive the professoriate while growing into thriving minoritized and underrepresented scholars. This book explores personal and institutional factors that are seldom discussed in other career success books, helping faculty as well as institutional leaders understand how we can, individually and collectively, create systems that invite and recognize humanity while ensuring successful career pathways for marginalized folks with doctoral degrees.
