Book Synopsis Texas Women by : Elizabeth Hayes Turner
Download or read book Texas Women written by Elizabeth Hayes Turner and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a collection of biographies and composite essays of Texas women, contextualized over the course of history to include subjects that reflect the enormous racial, class, and religious diversity of the state. Offering insights into the complex ways that Texas' position on the margins of the United States has shaped a particular kind of gendered experience there, the volume also demonstrates how the larger questions in United States women's history are answered or reconceived in the state. Beginning with Juliana Barr's essay, which asserts that 'women marked the lines of dominion among Spanish and Indian nations in Texas' and explodes the myth of Spanish domination in colonial Texas, the essays examine the ways that women were able to use their borderland status to stretch the boundaries of their own lives. Eric Walther demonstrates that the constant changing of governments in Texas (Spanish, Mexican, Texan, and U.S.) gave slaves the opportunities to resist their oppression because of the differences in the laws of slavery under Spanish or English or American law. Gabriela Gonzalez examines the activism of Jovita Idar on behalf of civil rights for Mexicans and Mexican Americans on both sides of the border. Renee Laegreid argues that female rodeo contestants employed a "unique regional interplay of masculine and feminine behaviors" to shape their identities as cowgirls"--

Book Synopsis The Relationship Between Chaotic Events and Credit Union Leadership Practices by : Dr. Paul Withey
Download or read book The Relationship Between Chaotic Events and Credit Union Leadership Practices written by Dr. Paul Withey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational crises, in modern society, requires an immediate response. Chaotic stages occur during organizational changes resulting in emotional experiences for leaders who develop intense feelings of anger, shock, and frustration. Leaders who are not prepared will be overwhelmed by the need for an aggressive response to change. The ability to solve problems successfully will increase movement of the organization though the chaos stage. Building a foundation of preparation for a leader, prior to the organizational change stage, will decrease levels of dysfunction the organization may experience. It is time for a new approach to managing organizational chaos. The research in this book provides original contributions to leadership studies by applying general systems and chaos theory to leadership behaviors in times of crisis. Chaos theory offers different perspectives that will allow leaders to develop capacities for changing their existing approaches to chaotic events. Results from the research in this study are valuable to credit union leaders, and also all business leaders, who need new models that recognize external factors influencing the sustainability of the organization. This adaptability is one of the most effective leadership skills a leader can display (Higgs & Rowland, 2005). Introducing general systems and chaos theory into organizational leadership has become a new approach to leadership psychology and philosophy, promising to influence leadership and management theories (Bums, 2002). The significance of chaos theory for leadership studies lies in its heuristic power. If the challenges to normal events are observed through the lens of chaos theory, organizational leaders may make better-informed decisions in times of uncertainty.

Book excerpt: Killian: I think I have a thing for my roommate. I, Killian "Killer" James, future NHL goalie and current team loner, have no idea how this started. I'm a poor ranch-hand from Texas who ended up at a boarding school for the elite for one reason: hockey. My classmates don't understand the world I grew up in. And then there's Diego, the guy who asks too many questions and talks so much I can barely think. But he trusts me, and that's not a feeling I can easily forget. When he isn't hunched over his computer screen or trying to save the planet, he stares at me with these adorable wide eyes behind his glasses. I don't need any distractions, but I'm starting to realize maybe I want one. Diego: My roommate has killer dimples. He'd probably punch me if he knew I noticed. As the goalie on the school's prized hockey team, Killian James is out of my league. Even if he were gay. I, Diego "weird-guy" Jackson, love math. Computer code is my language. I've grown up with anything money can buy but little else, and now, I don't know how to talk to people. Sometimes, when I ask my constant awkward questions, I wait for Killian to laugh at me, to make fun of me. He never does. Maybe that's why his rare smiles make me want more. Maybe it's why I'm willing to risk my life climbing onto a horse, or strapping my feet into death-trap ice skates. I'm tired of living inside my own lonely world. I'd rather join his. Dating Texas is a full-length sweet M/M romance with a HEA. If you like swoony boys, heartbreaking moments, and a love that transcends everything, this book is for you. Book Synopsis In the Dream House by : Carmen Maria Machado
Download or read book In the Dream House written by Carmen Maria Machado and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary memoir about domestic abuse by the award-winning author of Her Body and Other Parties In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado’s engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it’s that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope—the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman—through which Machado holds the events up to the light and examines them from different angles. She looks back at her religious adolescence, unpacks the stereotype of lesbian relationships as safe and utopian, and widens the view with essayistic explorations of the history and reality of abuse in queer relationships. Machado’s dire narrative is leavened with her characteristic wit, playfulness, and openness to inquiry. She casts a critical eye over legal proceedings, fairy tales, Star Trek, and Disney villains, as well as iconic works of film and fiction. The result is a wrenching, riveting book that explodes our ideas about what a memoir can do and be.
