Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the millions of medieval charters surviving in European archives and repositories were written without any reference to a date of issue. The proliferation of undated charters in England and Normandy indicates that the custom was especially peculiar to lands under Norman rule, but charters issued by major religious houses are often also undated. The DEEDS Project at the University of Toronto has developed a computerised methodology for dating charters, relying on analysis of vocabulary, syntax and formulae. In this volume an international group of scholars concerned with the problem of charter chronology consider the potential of the computerised methodology compared to other more traditional methods of dating, such as identification of names, changing in wording and address, and handwriting. Discussion also touches on regional differences in the production, use and distribution of charters, and on ways both manual and mechanical to date and analyse the content of large numbers of them. MICHAEL GERVERS is Director of the DEEDS Project at the University of Toronto, Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Text and Textuality in Early Medieval Iberia is a study of the functions and conceptions of writing and reading, documentation and archives, and the role of literate authorities in the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian Peninsula between the Muslim conquest of 711 and the fall of the Islamic caliphate at Córdoba in 1031. Based on the first complete survey of the over 4,000 surviving Latin charters from the period, it is an essay in the archaeology and biography of text: part one concerns materiality, tracing the lifecycle of charters from initiation and composition to preservation and reuse, while part two addresses connectivity, delineating a network of texts through painstaking identification of more than 2,000 citations of other charters, secular and canon law, the Bible, liturgy, and monastic rules. Few may have been able to read or write, yet the extent of textuality was broad and deep, in the authority conferred upon text and the arrangements made to use it. Via charter and scribe, society and social arrangements came increasingly to be influenced by norms originating from a network of texts. By profiling the intersection and interaction of text with society and culture, Graham Barrett reconstructs textuality, how the authority of the written and the structures to access it framed and constrained actions and cultural norms, and proposes a new model of early medieval reading. As they cited other texts, charters circulated fragments of those texts; we must rethink the relationship of sources and audiences to reflect fragmentary transmission, in a textuality of imperfect knowledge.

Book excerpt: Dating the Old Testament addresses the subject of when the books of the Bible were written. It explains why the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy are a literary unity, and how the Egyptian background for these books support a date of writing during the exodus generation. It provides a detailed critique of the Documentary Hypothesis, the theory that Genesis through Joshua were created from four different sources usually labelled J, E, D, and P. It provides extensive evidence that all of Isaiah was written by Isaiah himself, and shows why Isaiah may have had a role in the collection and publication of other Old Testament books. It describes why the book of Daniel should be considered a product of the early Persian era and not the much later Maccabean period. The book contains a discussion of how the Hebrew language changed during the Old Testament era, and how this can be used to help date the books of the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: There’s a reason the media has dubbed matchmaker Rachel Greenwald as “The Wife Maker.” Yes, she’s responsible for over 750 marriages, but more importantly, she has solved perhaps the biggest dating mystery of all time: when you finally meet Mr. Right (or even Mr. Potential), what really compels him to call back (or not) after a date? Armed with her Harvard MBA, Rachel embarked on a fascinating ten-year research project to decipher this puzzle. In Have Him at Hello, she applies her business savvy to the dating world by conducting in-depth “exit interviews” with 1,000 single men, asking why they called back one woman, but not another. By refusing to accept the post-date brush-off like “There wasn’t any chemistry…” or the excited, but equally vague evening recap, “We hit it off!” Rachel extracted unabashedly honest and raw details. It turns out there are clear, tangible, consistent reasons why marriage-minded men either fall for you or disappear. The surprising “Top 5 Date Makers” and “Top 10 Date Breakers” revealed in this book can actually change your fate when Mr. Right finally comes along. Rachel’s goal isn’t for you to pretend to be someone you’re not, but rather to keep the ball in your court. By using her innovative research and tips as a guide, more men will ask to see you again ; then you can do the selecting, rather than wondering if they’ll call. Because information is power, this book will make your first hello a lasting one.

Book excerpt: Boots to Stilettos continues the story of Karah Woodard. Karah is determined to overcome all obstacles and live a productive, fulfilling life despite the odds. Her first book, Vengeance is Mine, details her struggle to overcome injustices and betrayal. Her childhood, love affairs, and an assault at the drill sergeant’s academy consumed her thoughts. She realizes that this could become what she identifies as a web of destruction. This place limits your ability to move forward, thereby preventing you from maximizing your potential. She finds her peace through her unwavering relationship with her heavenly Father. However, in book two, kids will be kids, but oh my god, her children, now young adults, became a major challenge. She struggled to understand their behavior and figure out the limits of her role in their lives. Again she finds peace and avoids the web. After a trip to New York City, her childhood dreams are ignited. She always wanted to become a well-respected author. She wanted a glamorous social life and to meet the man of her dreams. Unfortunately, years of struggle had left her exhausted, and making her dreams a reality seemed unachievable. This, too, could become that web that prevents her from reaching her greatest potential. She also knew that with God, all things were possible. And essentially, the question becomes, did she have the intestinal fortitude?

Book excerpt: This volume details how new theories and methods have recently advanced the archaeological study of initial human colonization of islands around the world, including in the southwest Pacific, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. This global perspective brings into comparison the wide variety of approaches used to study these early migrations and illuminates current debates in island archaeology. Evidence of island colonization is often difficult to find, especially in areas impacted by sea-level rise, and these essays demonstrate how researchers have tackled this and other issues. Contributors show the potential of computer simulations of voyaging in determining the range of timing and origin points that were possible in the past. They discuss how Bayesian modeling helps address uncertainties and controversies surrounding radiocarbon dating. Additionally, advances in biomolecular techniques such as ancient DNA (aDNA), paleoproteomics, analysis of human microbiota, and improved resolution in isotopic analyses are providing more refined information on the homelands of initial settlers, on individual life courses, and on population-level migrations. Islands offer rich opportunities to examine the exploratory nature of the human species, providing insights into the evolution of watercraft technologies and wayfinding, the impact of humans on their new environments, and the motivations for their journeys. The Archaeology of Island Colonization represents the innovative ways today’s archaeologists are reconstructing these unique paleolandscapes. Contributors: Nasullah Aziz | David Ball | Todd J.
