Book Synopsis Creating EAD-compatible Finding Guides on Paper by : Elizabeth H. Dow
Download or read book Creating EAD-compatible Finding Guides on Paper written by Elizabeth H. Dow and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many archivists work in a repository that cannot consider publishing its inventories on the World Wide Web at this time. They have watched the growing use of the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) for publishing inventories and other finding aids on the Web, and they look forward to the day when their repository will also have a place in the Internet's mega-library of intellectual resources. This book shows those archivists how to create clear and precise archival description in order to start preparing for that day. Dow focuses on the information needed to collect and describe one's collection, where to put it in relation to other information, and what standards to use in the process. Rounding out this publication is a bibliography, a glossary of terms, and an index.

Book Synopsis "Little Research Value" by : Ndeshi Namhila
Download or read book "Little Research Value" written by Ndeshi Namhila and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ellen Ndeshi Namhila is intrigued by the question: Why can the National Archives of Namibia respond to genealogical enquiries of Whites in a matter of minutes with finding estate records of deceased persons, while similar requests from Blacks cannot be served? Not satisfied with the sweeping statement that this is the result of colonialism and apartheid, she follows the track of so-called Native estates through legislation, record creation and disposal, records management and administrative neglect, authorised and unauthorised destruction, transfer and appraisal, selective processing, and (almost) final amnesia. Eventually she discovers over 11,000 forgotten surviving African estate records but also evidence for the destruction of many others. And she demonstrates the potential of these records to interpret the lives of those who otherwise appear in history only as statistics records which were condemned to destruction by colonial archivists stating they had little research value and no functional value. This study of memory against forgetting is a call to post-colonial archives to re-visit their holdings and the systemic colonial bias that continues to haunt them. This is the revised version of Ellen Namhilas 2015 doctoral thesis published at the University of Tampere, Finland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our nation’s documentary heritage resides in small historical societies, libraries, cultural organizations, houses of worship, and museums. The preservation of this heritage often depends on the dedicated efforts of people who, in their workaday world, practice some profession other than archivist. For twenty five years, Organizing Archival Records has equipped non-professional archivists to tackle the challenging task of arranging and describing archival materials. The latest edition preserves the practical, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach of earlier editions while updating its content to reflect current archival practices: practical ways to arrange and describe digital records; simple tools you can use to manage and store your descriptions, whatever the level of your computer skills; how to share your descriptions with others; why provenance and original order are foundational to arrangement and description; how the principles codified in SAA’s Describing Archives: A Content Standard can guide your arrangement and description process; an expanded discussion of related topics, including appraisal, security, safe handling of records, storage conditions, and what to do with all the records that were in your archives before you read Organizing Archival Records.
Book Synopsis A Kaleidoscope of Digital American Literature by : Martha L. Brogan
Download or read book A Kaleidoscope of Digital American Literature written by Martha L. Brogan and published by Digital Library Federation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report will be useful to anyone interested in the current state of online American literature resources. Its purpose is twofold: to offer a sampling of the types of digital resources currently available or under development in support of American literature; and to identify the prevailing concerns of specialists in the field as expressed during interviews conducted between July 2004 and May 2005. Part two of the report consolidates the results of these interviews with an exploration of resources currently available. Part three examines six categories of digital work in progress: (1) quality-controlled subject gateways, (2) author studies, (3) public domain e-book collections and alternative publishing models, (4) proprietary reference resources and full-text primary source collections, (5) collections by design, and (6) teaching applications. This survey is informed by a selective review of the recent literature."--CLIR Web site.
Download or read book Making Canada New written by Dean Irvine and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the connections between modernist writers and editorial activities, Making Canada New draws links among new and old media, collaborative labour, emergent scholars and scholarships, and digital modernisms. In doing so, the collection reveals that renovating modernisms does not need to depend on the fabrication of completely new modes of scholarship. Rather, it is the repurposing of already existing practices and combining them with others - whether old or new, print or digital - that instigates a process of continuous renewal. Critical to this process of renewal is the intermingling of print and digital research methods and the coordination of more popular modes of literary scholarship with less frequented ones, such as bibliography, textual studies, and editing. Making Canada New tracks the editorial renovation of modernism as a digital phenomenon while speaking to the continued production of print editions.
