Book Synopsis Aegeans in the Theban Tombs by : Shelley Wachsmann
Download or read book Aegeans in the Theban Tombs written by Shelley Wachsmann and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wall paintings of several Theban tombs represent foreigners who present gifts that are sometimes typically Cretan or Aegean. Other foreigners, although labeled Princes of Keftiu (Crete), are represented as Asiatics. The aim of the present volume is to analyze these wall paintings in order to distinguish the Aegeans and their gifts. The author manages to establish their characteristics in nine Theban tombs, divides chronologically in two groups, and shows that the related figures reflect actual Aegeo-Egyptian relations in the time of the XVIIIth dynasty, down to c. 1470/1450 BC. This result is obtained by a careful comparison of represented gifts with undoubtedly Minoan objects and documents from the Aegean, especially Crete.

Book Synopsis The Social Context of Technological Change by : Andrew J. Shortland
Download or read book The Social Context of Technological Change written by Andrew J. Shortland and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technological capabilities of the ancient world have long fascinated scholars and the general public alike, though scholarly debate has often seen material culture not as the development of technology, but as a tool for defining chronology and delineating the level of interactions of neighboring societies. These fourteen papers, arising from a conference held in Oxford in September 2000, take the approach that technology plays a vital role in past socioeconomic systems. They cover the Near East and associated areas, including Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Anatolia, the Levant, Mesopotamia and Egypt from the end of the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Bronze Age (1650-1150 BC), a period when many technological innovations appear for the first time.

A book geared more to the interested reader and students embarking on Aegean courses, than serious scholars who will already be familiar with the content.
Book Synopsis Metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean by : Peter M. Day
Download or read book Metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean written by Peter M. Day and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, our understanding of metals and metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean has been dominated by studies which focus on the circulation and provenance of metals. Over the last decade the study of early metallurgy in the Aegean has witnessed dramatic developments with ever earlier and more detailed evidence for metal production being discovered in the field. Paralleling these field studies are a wealth of new laboratory analyses relating to the material aspects of metal production. This diverse new data when coupled with recent theoretical approaches now allow for significant shifts in our understanding of this important aspect of Aegean prehistory. Since few studies of metallurgy have extended beyond typological analysis of artefacts, the circulation of raw materials and the detailing of technical processes, metallurgy in the Aegean Early Bronze Age was made a subject of discussion at the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology's Round Table. This volume contains fifteen papers which address aspects of mining smelting and artefact production from a range of theoretical perspectives. It represents the first publication of many of the key details from numerous newly discovered sites. Contributors include Yannis Bassiakos, Phillip Betancourt, Mihalis Catapotis, Peter M. Day, Nota Dimopoulou-Rethemiotaki, Roger Doonan, Myrto Georgakopoulou, Jim Muhly, Georgia Nakou, Olga Philaniotou-Hadjianastasiou, Sue Sherratt, Metaxia Tsipopoulou, Yiannis Papadatos and David E. Wilson.
