Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: Federal transportation regulations and law direct State and local transportation agencies to account for economic development plans in transportation planning processes. While Federal law is not prescriptive about how State and local agencies account for economic development, there exists a need for better understanding of how highway projects can support economic development and the economic competitiveness of local and regional economies. This document is a primer on economic development, and includes a glossary of relevant terms, discussion of available economic analysis methods and tools, and descriptions of current practice in estimating economic development impacts by agencies of different sizes. The primer focuses on economic development concepts and economic development impacts generally, in the context of discussing the role of highway investment within a package of economic development actions and policies."--Technical report documentation page.

Book Synopsis Interactions Between Transportation Capacity, Economic Systems, and Land Use by :
Download or read book Interactions Between Transportation Capacity, Economic Systems, and Land Use written by and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Strengthening the economic vitality of a region (jobs and income) is one of the primary reasons for investing in highway capacity. Elements of improving economic vitality include better access to markets and labor force, reduced cost of delay, reduced congestion, improved safety, reduced pollution, and a better quality of life. However, the ways in which new and improved highway capacity influences economic vitality are complex and often indirect. This project had three objectives: (1) to provide a resource to help determine the net changes in the economic systems of an area impacted by a transportation capacity investment; (2) to provide data and results from enough structured cases that project planners in the future can use the cases to demonstrate by analogy the likely impacts of a proposed project or group of projects (plan); and (3) to demonstrate how this fits into collaborative decision making for capacity expansion."--proj. desc. This project produced 100 case studies of already-built highway capacity projects and their economic development impacts. To accomplish this, the study team compiled pre/post economic and land development data and conducted local interviews, in order to portray the actual, observed economic development impacts of those projects. The results were put into a database and classified by type of project and local setting. An accompanying web tool, called T-PICS (Transportation Project Impact Case Studies), was developed to provide access to the case study information so it can be used to portray the range of economic development impacts occurring as a result of different types of projects in different settings.

Book Synopsis Highway infrastructure FHWA's model for estimating highway needs has been modified for statelevel planning. by :
Download or read book Highway infrastructure FHWA's model for estimating highway needs has been modified for statelevel planning. written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal and state governments have played a vital role in the nation economy by facilitating the movement of people and goods through significant investments in highways. At the federal level, the Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) uses a computer model known as the Highway Economic Requirements System (HERS) to estimate the future investment required to maintain and improve the nation highways. DOT reports the results of this analysis to the Congress on a biennial basis. However, state governments make a large number of highway infrastructure investment decisions. States currently use a variety of analytic tools to make these decisions. Interest in using HERS at the state level has grown. Two states Indiana and Oregon are already using customized versions of the model, and in December 2000, FHWA began a pilot project to test its state-level version of HERS, called HERS-ST, with interested states.
