Download or read book The Karjill written by Gary Kirby and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time and tide sometimes clash into chaos, sometimes swell together into a moonlit sea of tranquility, and sometimes, very rare times, time and tide meet at the perfect angle of chaos and calm. This was such a time. And on such a tide, in the young of the year when the earth was still fresh and green, a small clump of seaweed washed ashore. A little karjill found a pearl inside that became his destiny and his journey. The dark waves reached for him, almost like the lips of a lover promising him peace, comfort, the end of his motion. He drifted into them. The light dimmed. The blackness grew. The folds of repulsive flesh coiled around him. He had failed. The waves crashed against the sacred walls. They lashed against the dome, tore into Flat Rock which shuddered, then split and was sucked into the sea. All natural laws broke as the waves refused to be held in by the land. Mountains were ripped out by their roots and the wind drilled holes into the sea floor. He was hurtling into a chaos of dark and glistening beauty, a bursting clash of light and sound .

Book Synopsis Inscribing Sovereignties by : Phillip H. Round
Download or read book Inscribing Sovereignties written by Phillip H. Round and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before European settlers arrived in North America, more than 300 distinct languages were being spoken among the continent's Indigenous peoples. But the Euro-American emphasis on alphabetic literacy has historically hidden the power and influence of Indigenous verbal and nonverbal language diversity on encounters between Indigenous North Americans and settlers. In this pathbreaking work, Phillip H. Round reveals how Native North Americans sparked a communications revolution in their adaptation and resistance to settlers' modes of speaking and writing. Round especially focuses on communication through inscription—the physical act of making a mark, the tools involved, and the social and cultural processes that render the mark legible. Using methods from history, literary studies, media studies, linguistics, and material culture studies, Round shows how Indigenous graphic practices embodied Native epistemologies while fostering linguistic innovation. Round's broad theory of graphogenesis—creating meaningful inscription—leads to new insights for both the past and present of Indigenous expression in a range of forms. Readers will find powerful new insights into Indigenous languages and linguistic practices, with important implications not just for scholars but for those working to support ongoing Native American self-determination.

Book Synopsis Indian Sculpture by : Stella Kramrisch
Download or read book Indian Sculpture written by Stella Kramrisch and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone with an understanding of art in general and a knowledge, however slight, of Indian things, will, on being shown a work of Indian sculpture, unfailingly label it Indian. Differences in age and origin, however clearly marked to the discerning eye, when pointed out to the outsider, will be apprehended only with more or less difficulty. There is something so strong, and at the same time unique, in any Indian work of art that its 'Indianness' is felt first of all, and what it is, is seen only on second thought. How this Indianness is expressed in terms of the relationship between line, surface, volume and other elements of visualisation is dealt with in this book. There are permanent qualities throughout the fabric of Indian sculpture which are discussed in detail. These essential qualities, all interrelated and inseparable, contain within their compass the life of Indian plastic art. The book surveys the structure of Indian sculpture in its relevant aspects. The underlying and essential qualities are viewed in their permanency throughout the special conditions that the single monuments imply. Their outward connections, geographical and chronological, are seen to resolve themselves into ethical problems and those of the artistic process itself. While stylistic investigations are the basis of this book, Indian sculpture is dealt with as conditioned by the Indian craftsman. His consciousness makes him known to himself as a part of nature and his work in the form of this 'naturalism'. Its degree and aspects vary according to the levels of his consciousness.

Book Synopsis Autumn's Dancing Leaves by : Ralph Hunter
Download or read book Autumn's Dancing Leaves written by Ralph Hunter and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eddie didn't favor anyone in his family. Fair, blonde, and green-eyed, he stood in sharp contrast to the other darker-complected, dark-haired, blue-eyed members. The difference created a rift in the family fabric and his mother singled him out for abuse, irrationally holding him responsible for the family's turmoil. Little Eddie struggled with the severity of his maltreatment but, by age eleven, could no longer handle the circumstances of his life. He decided his only escape would be to die, that by conscious will, he could simply resolve to give up life and cease to exist. Eddie's mind, alerted to his decision, and believing the ultimate goal for any entity was to continue, regardless of form or quality of life, was determined to survive. Panicked at the threat of cessation, his mind made a desperate decision -- it fractured his personality and created Randy from traits that had been repressed in Eddie. Randy, a tough, defiant individual, was created to bring new energy, new life, and stand in defense of the defeated, accepting Eddie. Rising to the challenge, he accepted the responsibility of his creation and was fiercely focused to protecting Eddie while endeavoring to create new circumstances for the life they shared. Randy was proud of his efforts to save Eddie. He knew he was Eddie's paladin, his champion, created for a noble purpose -- to bring Eddie back from the brink of oblivion. After many struggles, Randy's efforts appeared to be successful and the mind considered the possibility of enjoying the existence he'd insured. It pondered the idea of Eddie being involved with the world, rather than merely persisting through the time allotted for the life. Aware of Eddie's inability to interact with the world around him, the mind again fractured the personality creating Jesse, a new facet, an aesthetic personality, focused to tender feelings of love and friendship -- and aspects which determine quality of life. Jesse felt he was created to experience emotions and appreciate beauty, to evolve the repressed side of the personality, to bring stability to the entity. He believed he was born to search for love, to find the emotional equilibrium that would bring the separate identities into harmony. Developed from suppressed characteristics, Jesse was creative and confident, loving and inquisitive, charming and fun loving. And he was on a quest -- determined to achieve his goal. Without Eddie's awareness of them, Randy and Jesse sought to balance their existence and hoped they were achieving what they saw as a normal life until Jesse experienced an incident which shattered that belief and forced them to realize they had not progressed as far as they thought. Jesse's realization that he had made a terrible mistake was devastating. Jumping to a conclusion, Randy, the controlling personality, in his determination to fend off any challenges to them, felt he must take over to handle the crisis in an effort to protect them...
