Book excerpt: Juan Cabrillo and the Oregon crew return in Clive Cussler's Dark Watch. A deadly band of pirates is terrorizing the waters of the Far East - and the crew of the Oregon may be the only people who can stop them... Juan Cabrillo and his expert team on the Oregon are used to working dirty, dangerous jobs. While thwarting terrorist missiles, Cabrillo and the crew stumble on pirates in the seas of China - men who are more concerned with destroying ships with their Shock and Awe attacks than plundering their valuables. When the team grows desperate for all the information they can get, one of Juan's best men risks everything to get closer to the truth. Soon, the Oregon team will discover that the pirates are hiding a much more deadly power: an international conspiracy of slavery that will rock the very foundations of the world banks. Millions of dollars and thousands of lives are at stake - and Juan Cabrillo is their only hope... Praise for Clive Cussler: 'Cussler is hard to beat' Daily Mail

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon Rousseau's The Dark Stream offers a fascinating insight into the life of Eugène Marais, one of the most complex and outstanding Afrikaners who ever lived, but is at the same time a panorama of South African history. Rousseau's account of the life of Eugène Marais begins in the early days of Pretoria (1871) and ends three years after Hitler's rise to power. Between these two dates are sandwiched many of the great events of Afrikaner and South African history: the British occupation of Pretoria, the beginning of the Afrikaans language movement, the Jameson raid, 'the naughty nineties' (when Marais was in London), the Boer War and its aftermath, World War I, and the rise of Afrikaner nationalism. Against this changing canvas, Rousseau introduces the reader to Marais in all his complexity, he explores Marais's talents as a naturalist, hypnotist, doctor and psychologist. He gives us an insight into Marais as an advocate, citizen of the world, magician and author and also takes us into his life as the widower, the lover and the tragic morphine addict.

Book excerpt: Mark Berry explores the political and religious ideas expounded in Wagner's Ring through close attention to the text and drama, the multifarious intellectual influences upon the composer during the work's lengthy gestation and composition, and the wealth of Wagner source material. Many of his writings are explicitly political in their concerns, for Wagner was emphatically not a revolutionary solely for the sake of art. Yet it would be misleading to see even the most 'political' tracts as somehow divorced from the aesthetic realm; Wagner's radical challenge to liberal-democratic politics makes no such distinction. This book considers Wagner's treatment of various worlds: nature, politics, economics, and metaphysics, in order to explain just how radical that challenge is. Classical interpretations have tended to opt either for an 'optimistic' view of the Ring, centred upon the influence of Young Hegelian thought - in particular the philosophy of Ludwig Feuerbach - and Wagner's concomitant revolutionary politics, or for the 'pessimistic' option, removing the disillusioned Wagner-in-Swiss-exile from the political sphere and stressing the undoubtedly important role of Arthur Schopenhauer. Such an 'either-or' approach seriously misrepresents not only Wagner's compositional method but also his intellectual method. It also sidelines inconvenient aspects of the dramas that fail to 'fit' whichever interpretation is selected. Wagner's tendency is not progressively to recant previous 'errors' in his oeuvre. Radical ideas are not completely replaced by a Schopenhauerian world-view, however loudly the composer might come to trumpet his apparent 'conversion'. Nor is Wagner's truly an Hegelian method, although Hegelian dialectic plays an important role. In fact, Wagner is in many ways not really a systematic thinker at all (which is not to portray him as self-consciously unsystematic in a Nietzschean, let alone 'post-modernist' fashion). His tendency, rather, is agglomerative,

Book excerpt: A story that could come true tomorrow When Ishmael Jacobson creates a virus that stops the ageing process in humans and animals alike, chaos could be the only result. Striving towards a dream of eternal life, everybody do what they can to get infected with the virus, even if it means breaking the law. It is up to detective Lindique to try to stop the spread of the virus, but is it too late? Soon the world is filled with people, and every day more and more are born. The ground turns barren, too tired to keep on giving life to billions upon billions of humans who are trying to scrape another morsel of food out of the dust. When there is no more food to eat, there is always the neighbour… In the end, there is only one person who can start the ageing process in humans again, and it is the person who started the whole problem to begin with, coming full circle.
