Book excerpt: The death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI constituted two important elements in the broad theological and cultural landscape of Catholicism. This change of pontificate has also nourished the journalistic and political dispute about Vatican II, its history and its legacy, and not only the historiographical and theological debate. But the research on Vatican II is already proceeding forward and beyond the state of knowledge about the Council reached at the end of the 90s. For 21st century Catholics and theologians interested in understanding contemporary Catholicism in the light of Vatican II the intellectual undertaking is far from accomplished yet. The book offers comprehensive presentation of the theological and historiographical debate about Council Vatican II. The attempt to go beyond "the clash of interpretations" - Vatican II as a rupture in the history of Catholicism on one side, the need to read Vatican II in continuity with the tradition on the other - is necessary indeed because the ongoing debate about Vatican II is largely misrepresented by the use of "clashing interpretations" as a tool for understanding the role of the council in present-day Catholicism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Luc Marion has long endeavored to broaden our view of truth. In this illuminating new book—his deepest engagement with theology to date—Marion proposes a rigorous new understanding of human and divine revelation in a deeply phenomenological key. Although today considered the central theme of theology, the concept of Revelation was almost entirely unknown to the first millennium of Christian thought. In a penetrating historical deconstruction Marion traces the development of this term to the rise of metaphysics from Aquinas through Suárez, Descartes, and Kant; formalized into an epistemological framework, this understanding of Revelation has restricted philosophical and theological thinking ever since. To break free from these limits, Marion takes hints from theologians including Barth and Balthasar while mobilizing the phenomenology of givenness to provide a rigorous new understanding of revelation as a mode of uncovering. His extensive study of the Jewish and Christian Scriptures unfolds a logic of Trinitarian phenomenality, worked out in conversation with Basil, Augustine, Hegel, Schelling, and others, that ultimately transforms our very notions of being and time. The result is precisely what we have come to expect from this acclaimed philosopher: masterful historical scholarship working in tandem with daring originality.

Yet in spite of its impact, Vatican II was in many ways an unfinished council. The council bishops were able to establish key pillars in the construction of a new vision for the church of our time, but, for various reasons, they were not able to draw those pillars together into a coherent unified structure. This volume describes both the council’s building project itself and the challenges facing the church today if we are to complete the project begun fifty years ago.

Book excerpt: Introductory ; Essay by Pope Benedict XVI This collection ; includes the four constitutions of the Second Vatican ; Council, the most popular and key documents for ; understanding the Council itself, its decrees, and its ; declarations. Few events in the history of the modern ; Catholic Church have been as far-reaching as the Second ; Vatican Council (1962-1965). And few have been as ; controversial. No one denies great changes have come about ; since the close of the Council. Have the changes been all ; good, all bad, or a mixture of both? To what extent were ; the changes, for good or ill, the result of the Council ; itself? Some have criticized the Council for not ; going far enough, though they maintain that the ""spirit ; of Vatican II"" supports their rejection of many firmly ; established Catholic beliefs and practices. Others claim ; the Council went too far and abandoned certain fundamental ; Catholic tenets in the name of ""updating"" the ; Church. The popes of the Council-John XXII and Paul VI-and ; their successors who also participated in the Council -John ; Paul I, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI-have insisted that ; the Council itself was the work of the Holy Spirit. They ; have aggressively criticized misinterpretations and ; distortions of it. They insist that the Council be ; understood in fundamental continuity with the Church's ; Tradition, even while deepening the Church's ; self-understanding and calling for authentic reforms and ; renewal of Catholic life. Readers can learn for ; themselves what the Second Vatican Council taught using ; this highly accessible collection of its basic ; texts. This book uses the Catholic Truth Society ; translation and features: The Constitution on ; the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, ; introduced by Cardinal Francis Arinze. The ; Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen ; Gentium, introduced by Cardinal Paul ; Poupard. The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine ; Revelation, Dei Verbum, introduced by Archbishop ; Charles J. Chaput, OFM, Cap. The Pastoral ; Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium ; et Spes, introduced by Cardinal Angelo ; Scola. Four major aspects of the Church's ; life-the Sacred Liturgy, the mystery of the Church herself, ; the Word of God, and the Church in the world as it is ; today-are explored. No twenty-first-century Catholic should ; be without these four foundational texts in this superb ; translation. The collection also includes a general ; introduction by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San ; Francisco, as well as an address given by Pope Emeritus ; Benedict XVI in 2005, explaining how best to understand the ; Second Vatican Council in the history of the Church.

Book excerpt: Pope John XXIII prayed that the Second Vatican Council would prove to be a new Pentecost. The articles gathered here appeared originally in a series solicited by and published in Theological Studies (September 2012 to March 2014). The purpose of the series was and remains threefold: • To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council • To help readers more fully appreciate its significance not only for the Catholic Church itself but also for the entire world whom the Church encounters in proclamation and reception of ongoing revelation • In their present form, to help readers worldwide engage both the conciliar documents themselves and scholarly reflections on them, all with a view to appropriating the reform envisioned by Pope John XXIII. Jeanrond, currently Master of St Benet's Hall, University of Oxford, UK, investigates the challenge of alterity for Christianity, exploring and elaborating on this core concern in Jeanrond's hermeneutical theology. Blurring disciplinary boundaries, more than thirty of Jeanrond's colleagues and companions from ten countries track the dynamics of difference driven by the encounter with the self as other, the other as other, and God as the radical other. Who is my other? What do I encounter when I encounter my other? And what responses and responsibilities does the encounter with my other evoke? Grappling with questions like these, the contributions to this compilation analyse alterity in the Bible, alterity in philosophy, alterity in theology, alterity in interreligious dialogues, and the radical alterity of God. Tying in with Jeanrond's explorations of the many faces and facets of the other, this Festschrift ultimately aims to advocate openness to the other as a necessity for both religion and reflections on religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present Chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between p- losophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the h- tory of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. So far, nine volumes have been published in this series, viz. P- losophy of Language and Philosophical Logic (Volume 1), Philosophy of Science (Volume 2), Philosophy of Action (Volume 3), Philosophy of Mind (Volume 4), African Philosophy (Volume 5), Medieval Age P- losophy (Volumes 6/1 and 6/2), Asian Philosophy (Volume 7), Philo- phy of Latin America (Volume 8), and Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art (Volume 9).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of inspiration is part and parcel of the theological tradition in several religious confessions, but it has largely receded to the background, if not vanished altogether, in the discussions of biblical scholars. The question "Do we still need inspiration?" might well reflect the perplexity of many exegetes today. Systematic theologians, for their part, often further their own reflections on the subject independently of developments in the field of exegesis, with the risk of remaining purely theoretical. Biblical research in the last decades has been marked by new insights about the nature of the biblical texts, stemming from the study of their inner plurality (insofar as they combine and sometimes intertwine conflicting theologies), of their textual fluidity, and of their reception. Can these new insights be integrated into a theological reflection on the notion of inspiration? These questions are often explicitly raised about the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, but they also prove increasingly relevant for Qur’ānic studies. This volume addresses them through contributions from exegetes of the Bible and of the Qur’an and systematic theologians.
