Book excerpt: This paper reviews classical approaches to damage detection using laser holography and interferometry. The paper then details the modern uses of electronic holography and neural-net-processed characteristic patterns to detect structural damage. The design of the neural networks and the preparation of the training sets are discussed. The use of a technique to optimize the training sets, called folding, is explained. Then a training procedure is detailed that uses the holography-measured vibration modes of the undamaged structures to impart damage-detection sensitivity to the neural networks. The inspections of an optical strain gauge mounting plate and an International Space Station cold plate are presented as examples.Decker, Arthur J.Glenn Research CenterDAMAGE; HOLOGRAPHY; LASER INTERFEROMETRY; NEURAL NETS; NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTS; STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS; INSPECTION; INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION; STRAIN GAGES; VIBRATION MODE; DAMAGE ASSESSMENT
Book Synopsis Holographic Interferometry by : Pramod K. Rastogi
Download or read book Holographic Interferometry written by Pramod K. Rastogi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holographic Interferometry provides a valuable and up-to-date source of information in the rapidly expanding field. The eight specialists` contributions cover the principles and methods currently in use. The scope of the book has been limited to the study of opaque object and ample space has been devoted to a comprehensive treatment of the phenomena of fringe formation, with a particular emphasis on the quantitative evaluation of the holographic interference fringe patterns. The emergence of computer-aided fringe analysis and phase-shifting techniques have simplified considerably the quantative real-time measurements of object shapes and deformations. The last two chapters provide a reasonably detailedoverview of full-field holographic methods for the measurement of shapes, displacements, dervatives, difference displacements and vibrations.
Book Synopsis Optical Metrology for Fluids, Combustion and Solids by : Carolyn Mercer
Download or read book Optical Metrology for Fluids, Combustion and Solids written by Carolyn Mercer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Metrology for Fluids, Combustion and Solids is the first practical handbook that presents the assemblage of the techniques necessary to provide a basic understanding of optical measurement for fluids, combustion, and solids. The use of light as a measurement tool has grown over the past twenty years from a narrowly specialized activity to a mainstay of modern research today. Until recently, the knowledge that could be extracted from the light interaction of light with physical objects was limited to specialized activities. The invention of the laser, the computer and microelectronics has enabled a measurement revolution such that virtually every parameter of engineering interest can be measured using the minimally intrusive properties of light. The authors of this book's chapters are leaders in this revolution. They work on the front lines of research in government, industry, and universities, inventing yet more ways to harness the power of light for the generation of knowledge.
Book Synopsis A Technique for Obtaining Improved Real-time Holographic Interferometric Data Using Pulse Modulated Illumination by : Frank D. Adams
Download or read book A Technique for Obtaining Improved Real-time Holographic Interferometric Data Using Pulse Modulated Illumination written by Frank D. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations and experiments were performed to show that the fringe patterns on a vibrating structure, as observed using real-time holographic interferometry, has a substantially increased contrast ratio if the laser illumination is amplitude modulated by a sequence of pulses which are synchronized with the vibration. The time and effort required to obtain interferometric data using this method is an order of magnitude less than that needed when using time-average holographic interferograms. Potential applications include experimental studies of fatigue damage, crack detection and propagation, flaw detection in composite and honeycomb structures as well as vibration analysis of structural members.

The book explores the propagation of laser beams, metrological applications of phase-singular beams, various detectors such as CCD and CMOS devices, and recording materials. It also covers interference, diffraction, and digital fringe pattern measurement techniques, with special emphasis on phase measurement interferometry and algorithms. The remainder of the book focuses on theory, experimental arrangements, and applications of wholefield techniques. The author discusses digital hologram interferometry, digital speckle photography, digital speckle pattern interferometry, Talbot interferometry, and holophotoelasticity. This updated book compiles the major wholefield methods of measurement in one volume. It provides a solid understanding of the techniques by describing the physics behind them. In addition, the examples given illustrate how the techniques solve measurement problems.

Book Synopsis Care and Repair of Advanced Composites by : Keith B Armstrong
Download or read book Care and Repair of Advanced Composites written by Keith B Armstrong and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of the well known Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, improves on the usefulness of this practical guide geared towards the aerospace industry. Keith B. Armstrong, the original lead author of the first edition was still in charge of this project, counting on the expert support of Eric Chesmar, senior composites specialist at United Airlines. Mr. Chesmar is also an active member of SAE International's CACRC (Commercial Aircraft Composite Repair Committee), an elite group of industry experts dedicated to the standardization, safety, security, and efficiency of composite repairs in the airline industry. Mr. Francois Museux (Airbus) and Mr. William F. Cole II also contributed. Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, presents a fully updated approach to the training syllabus recommended for repair design engineers and composite repair mechanics. Metal bonding has been included partly because the defi nition of "composite" can be interpreted to include metal-skinned honeycomb panels, and partly because some composite parts have metal fi ttings or reinforcements that must be treated before bonding. This third edition also covers a number of the problems experienced in service, some of which may be applicable to metallic sandwich panels, offers suggestions for design improvements, including repair design as a particular topic, and regulatory changes. Care and Repair of Advanced Composites, 3rd Edition, provides solid technical information and training for a wide range of airline staff.
