Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Training But by this wise provision of nature, Simultaneously with the crowding into towns (a feature, by the way, not of decadent but of increasing national energy, and in evitable to successful competition), came this new feature, the rise of athleticism, and the desire and necessity for the health which athleticism both demands and, on the other hand, brings with it. It is requisite, in order to excel at any game which demands fleetness of foot, quickness of movement, accuracy of eye, to live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strength and How to Obtain It Hundreds of letters reach me daily, asking Can I become strong? Yes; you can all become strong if you have the will and use it in the right direction. But, in the first place, you must learn to exercise your mind. This first of all lessons in physical training is of the utmost importance. For on it the whole of my system depends. If physical exercise alone and unaided could achieve the desired end, then would every one who, like the breaker of stones, has to use his muscles to earn his daily bread, become, in a popular acceptation of the term, a strong 1 man. The breaker of stones, however, never usemhis' mind. He has to get through a given amount of work, and his method is purely mechanical. Though he may use his muscles in hard work every day of the year it is unlikely that his strength will ever materially increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? My own actual need of such a work has been most clearly shown in my capacity of Lecturer in Physical Training in the Faculty of Education, Uni versity of Toronto. Almost daily I have been asked to recommend some work which would enable these embryo school teachers to learn something of their bodies, and the effect of exercise thereon. As these teachers are no further enlightened in the subject of physical training than the general public, it is not necessary to write anything but 'a simple, concise work on the subject. By dividing same into five parts, one is enabled to secure what is wanted without wading through unnecessary reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Long Distance Running and Training In the old days pedestrians used to make themselves believe that in order to accomplish anything of an athletic nature it was necessary to lay down certain hard and fast lines as regards food, from which it was little better than suicide to depart. The modern athlete is wiser in his day and recognizes that it is not necessary to gerge with raw beef, or to over-heat his blood, in order to be in prime con dition. In those davs it was thought becoming to eat big chunks of underdonemeat, to feast on eggs and to do all kinds of things that made training a wearisome, unpleasant and exhaustive task. To-dav we eat of such food as we fancy in a moderate wav, and we are thf better for it in health and performance.
