Book excerpt: A PERSONAL RETREAT. We've never needed it more. We run from one place to the next - from meetings and appointments to our kids' soccer practice, from work to class to choir rehearsal, from the grocery store to small group - and then drop into bed later than we hoped, exhausted and dreading the morning. We want to slow down but don't know how and don't really believe that we can. And often, the idea of a personal retreat - time for solitude and silence - makes us feel as anxious as all our frenzied rushing. What in the world would we do with an hour, an afternoon or (gulp!) a whole day of solitude with God? But what is the cost of our frantic pace? What are we missing by not slowing down for reflection and meditation on Scripture? What kind of toll does our anxious running take on those around us - and, even more deeply, on our own soul? In Resting Place, retreat speaker Jane Rubietta addresses soul matters with retreat topics such as: dealing with our fear of abandonment; wrestling with discontent; overcoming our attempts to control others; fulfilling our deep desire to be loved Spiritual retreats help us enter Psalm 23 rest, a place of true rest and trust in our loving, gentle Shepherd. With Scripture to meditate on, quotes to contemplate, questions, prayer and journaling ideas, and creative exercises, Resting Place leads us to and through times of rest. The silence and solitude will follow us into our everyday world as we allow Jesus to guide, comfort and restore us. Come to the Shepherd and find the true rest your soul longs for.

Book excerpt: In this heartwarming volume, surprising, true stories illustrate how normal people can move the mightiest mountain. Fascinating anecdotes reveal the ways an extraordinary God uses ordinary Christians to transform lives: a retired landscaper-turned-church maintenance man starts a nationally recognized ministry for the poor; a teenage girl offers comfort to a teacher who has just given birth to a Down syndrome baby; a tornado survivor grieves over two sisters lost in the storm, then dedicates her life to encouraging people who battle "the storms of life." These compelling stories offer encouraging proof that God will use any vessel-even the most ordinary.

Book excerpt: When the disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray,” they uttered one of the deepest and most universal cries of the human heart. For men of all ages have instinctively felt that prayer is the distilled essence of religion. If we know how to pray, we know how to be religious; if not, then religion is a closed book. Where there is no effective prayer life, the heart of religion has ceased to beat and religion becomes a dead body of forms and customs and dogmas. And yet how few Christians have an effective prayer life! (And this includes many ministers.) If I were to put my finger on the greatest lack in American Christianity, I would unhesitatingly point to the need for an effective prayer life among laity and ministers. Kagawa once said to second-generation Japanese Christians on the West Coast: “Your greatest lack is that you do not know how to pray.” He saw that their Christianity was anemic and ineffective, because they had not learned the discipline of prayer. If I had one gift, and only one gift, to make to the Christian Church, I would offer the gift of prayer. For everything follows from prayer. Prayer tones up the total life. I find by actual experience I am better or worse as I pray more or less. If my prayer life sags, my whole life sags with it; if my prayer life goes up, my life as a whole goes up with it. To fail here is to fail all down the line; to succeed here is to succeed everywhere. In the prayer time the battle of the spiritual life is lost or won. Prayer is not an optional subject in the curriculum of living. It is a required subject; it is the required subject. And there is no graduation into adequate human living without prayer. Perhaps we are all more or less convinced of this viewpoint, but the “how” of prayer is the crux of the difficulty. To try to answer that word “how” is the burden of these articles. I propose to begin at the lowest rung of the ladder so that no one will feel I begin beyond him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's a different angle on humor--it can be a spiritual practice, an expression of a theology of joy, hope, and grace. Humor is so valuable, for it offers self-care, healing, and renewal, precious gifts in times of pressure and tension. Olson begins by telling of three unforgettable friends who lived their lives with joy and zest--a practice that opened doors and aided their own sense of well-being. Playfully, he continues by exploring the known benefits of humor. Next considered is the amazing variety of humor in the Bible, a basic theology of a laughing God, and the caring ethic of humor that emerges from this theology. Finally, there is a discussion of how this practice of humor enriches worship, caregiving, and administration. Laughter in a Time of Turmoil draws to a close considering spiritual disciplines/practices and why humor belongs among these practices. Suggestions are then offered on how to grow in this spiritual practice. Discussion questions are provided for each chapter to help groups enjoy their conversations about the book. This book will help you think and laugh, or laugh and think (take your pick) and then be on your way rejoicing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of provocative essays, Mark Collins celebrates the precious, fleeting, & unpredictable nature of life with wife, kids, & an industrial-strength case of middle-aged angst. Through the lens of everyday experiences - parenting, husbanding, car-repairing, kitchen-remodeling, bill-paying, & health- & friends- & Pittsburgh Pirates-worrying - these essays explore what today's husbands & fathers do with their "one wild & precious life." What joys, pains, sufferings, & hopes inform their decisions & choices. And what God is saying to them in between the lines of life's spontaneous script. At the heart of these snapshots of modern male life is the author's examination of the divine paradox of men in God's image, of testosterone in tandem with the Almighty, of "tough-guy" spirituality, the kind that allows a man to creatively invoke the Lord's name while watching his children in the annual Nativity pageant. With soul-revealing honesty, Mark Collins blends the nitty-gritty, the painful, the humorous, & the spiritual into an inspired self-portrait, a microcosm of male life in the '90s. Yet his images & stories also transcend gender, & in so doing exhort all readers to celebrate life in all of its precarious, glorious potential.
